MSI Unveils Innovations in Gaming Hardware & Computing at MSI Premiere 2021

MSI, a world leader in gaming hardware and computing solutions, unveils an innovative lineup of gaming, creator and business products at its virtual launch event, "MSI Premiere 2021: Tech For the Future". A powerful MSI Dragon G opened the "MSI Premiere 2021: Tech For the Future" show, followed by a helicopter that flew over the sea and revealed MSI RTX 30 SEA HAWK.

MSI SEA HAWK is the product of a revolutionary design with proven technology — which just got faster with an upgrade to the GeForce RTX 30 Series. The combined advantages of both air and liquid cooling come together with dedicated fan cooling and an all-in-one closed-loop liquid cooling solution that is efficient, silent and requires absolutely no maintenance.

MSI Unveils GeForce RTX 30-series SeaHawk X Graphics Card

MSI today unveiled the GeForce RTX 30-series SeaHawk X graphics cards, flagship custom-design cards. At this point, the company is still deliberating on which GPU to base the card on (whether it's RTX 3080 or RTX 3090, although we predict the company could go with the latter). Like every SeaHawk-branded card before it, the RTX 30-series SeaHawk X is characterized by a factory-fitted AIO closed-loop liquid cooling solution. The latest-generation SeaHawk X cooler, co-designed by Asetek, features a large copper cold-plate that cools not just the GPU via a micro-fin lattice, but also memory chips surrounding the GPU. The AIO pump-block located at the card's end of the cooler features Asetek's latest low-noise pump.

The MSI RTX 30 SeaHawk X is connected to a 240 mm x 120 mm aluminium radiator, which is ventilated by a pair of 120 mm TorX 4.0 fans that feature webbed impellers. On the card itself, a single fan is installed on the cooler, which ventilates a series of heatsinks that cool the VRM. An aluminium back-plate cools the memory chips on the reverse side of the PCB. MSI optimized the fans to completely turn off (including the radiator fans), below a temperature threshold. The pump runs at all times. MSI hasn't finalized the clock speeds of the card, or its price.

As the launch of Intel's 500 series chipsets is getting near, we are starting to see more motherboards appear and get leaked. Today, thanks to the folks over VideoCardz, we have the first pictures of MSI's upcoming Z590 motherboards, with the latest designs and ideas from the company. Pictured below are MSI's trio of motherboards including MSI MEG Z590 GODLIKE, MPG Z590 Gaming Carbon WiFi, and MAG Z590 Tomahawk WiFi boards. The first in line is the MEG Z590 GODLIKE motherboard, a top tier, flagship design made with E-ATX standard in mind. It is supposed to bring all of the platform features to the table while being the best for overclocking due to its 20 (18+1+1) VRM phases.

Next up are the MPG Z590 Gaming Carbon WiFi and MAG Z590 Tomahawk WiFi designs, which should represent a bit cut-down GODLIKE variants. We don't have the exact specifications, so we need to wait for the official announcement.

MSI to Release New Revision of RTX 3060 Ti: Ventus 2X V1

MSI are seemingly readying themselves to update their RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2X graphics card with a relatively deep revision. The new Ventus 2X V1 graphics card keeps all the same frequencies and clocks of the previous Ventus 2X (1695 MHz boost clock in the OC model), and the same TGP of 200 W. The bulk of the revisions are focused on the cards' power delivery and heat dissipation systems.

The new, revised Ventus 2X V1does away with the original's 2x 8-pin connectors, and offers a single 8-pin connector for power delivery purposes. This could mean lowered overclocking ceilings for the card, but I suppose we'll only know the answer to that when these are out there in the wild. The fact that MSI also revised the cooling system, however, seems to give credence to that overclocking headroom theory: with less power being (possibly) delivered to the card, MSI has seen it fit to make the Ventus 2X V1 a thinner card compared to its predecessor (it's a 2-slot card now, at 42 mm, whereas it was a 2.2-slot in the first revision, at 52 mm).

MSI Confirms Rocket Lake Arrives in Late-March, 400-series Chipset Compatibility

MSI in a customer service response that's been machine translated and tweeted by harukaze5719, revealed that Intel's 11th Gen Core "Rocket Lake-S" desktop processors arrive "by the end of March." This is the first confirmation from someone in the know that "Rocket Lake-S" won't arrive before the very end of Q1-2021, and that one should realistically expect availability only from Q2.

The same CS response also confirms backwards compatibility of the processors with existing Socket LGA1200 motherboards based on the Intel 400-series chipset. It mentions that MSI will release UEFI firmware updates that enable "Rocket Lake-S" compatibility starting with boards based on the top Intel Z490 chipset, followed by other 400-series models. Intel is expected to unveil its 11th Gen Core "Rocket Lake-S" desktop processor and compatible 500-series chipset platform in mid-January, as part of a virtual event on the sidelines of the 2021 International CES (a virtual show).

MSI GeForce RTX 3090 AERO is a Throwback to the GTX 480 "Fermi"

MSI today unveiled the GeForce RTX 3090 AERO, the latest in the crop of RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 graphics cards with rear-venting lateral airflow coolers, such as the ASUS RTX 3090 Turbo OC and the GIGABYTE RTX 3090 Turbo, targeting environments with restricted airflow (such as rendering farms). The MSI RTX 3090 AERO strongly resembles the reference-design of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 "Fermi."

The card's blower guides air-flow laterally through an aluminium fin-channel heatsink that isn't hidden underneath a cooler shroud, but rather extends all the way out to the thickness of the card, with its top-plate having some finnage of its own. Much like the ASUS card, the MSI AERO uses two 8-pin PCIe power connectors that are located its tail-end, rather than at the top. Only half of the card's reverse side is covered by a back-plate, meant to cool the memory chips located there. The other half is bare PCB. This has been done to make it easier for an adjacent card to breathe. The card otherwise sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock-speeds for the RTX 3090. The company didn't reveal pricing.

MSI Announces Optix G242 eSports Monitor: 24" 1080p, IPS, 144 Hz, VRR, 250 nits

MSI today announced yet another addition to their gaming monitor staple in the form of the Optix G242. This monitor drops the MAG prefix, denoting a higher-end solution, and should therefore (and according to its specs) be priced lower than those solutions. The Optix G242 features a relatively small, 24" diagonal that offers up an IPS panel with 1080p resolution. A now "normal" 144 Hz refresh rate is served up in that package, and perhaps more interestingly, the panel displays up to 16.7 million colors covering a wide color gamut display coverage rated at 94.6% DCI-P3 and 127.7% sRGB. VRR is also supported for additional gaming capabilities, either in the form of FreeSync or NVIDIA's G-Sync Compatible branding.

The 250 nits maximum brightness are nothing to write home about; that said, the Optix G242 features MSI's "AntiFlickr" technology and an incorporated "Blue Light Reduction" filtering mode. Contrast is quoted at 1000:1. I/O is assured by 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 2x HDMI 1.4, and 1x Earphone jack. Body sizing is a beautiful (as all supposedly are) 540.2 mm width, 228.2 mm depth, 411.6 mm height, and 3.33 kg. No word on pricing or availability were available at time of writing.

MSI Intros Optix MAG301 CR2 Ultra-Widescreen Curved Monitor

MSI today introduced the Optix MAG301 CR2, a 30-inch ultra-widescreen curved monitor with 1500R curvature, WFHD (2560 x 1080 pixels) resolution; and a list of gaming chops. Built with a VA panel, it offers 200 Hz refresh-rate, 1 ms (MPRT) response time, AMD FreeSync Premium support, 178° viewing angles, and 3000:1 static contrast ratio. Among its connectivity options are USB-C (including DP passthrough), DisplayPort 1.2a, and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. Specs aside, the Optix MAG offers the full suite of MSI Gaming innovations, including OSD Gaming (gaming overlays), and presets suited to specific gaming genres. The company didn't reveal pricing.

MSI Cargo Containers Chock-Full of RTX 3090 Graphics Cards Allegedly Stolen, $336,500 Value at MSRP

Now this is the first one such article I've ever written, which goes to show just how strange and crazy this pandemic time is. MSI has allegedly been the victim of a well-coordinated theft that managed to divert no less than 40 cargo units holding NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards from one of MSI's manufacturing sites in China. These cargo units aren't freight containers, to be clear; they're the sealed cardboard boxes with a manufacturers' seal that are shipped to retailers, with each cargo unit containing (usually) between five and six cards.

The cards are being valued at 2.2 Million Yuan, which is roughly $336,500 in US dollars, when priced at MSRP. That amounts to roughly 224 RTX 3090 GPUs. Of course, these cards will be much more valuable in the black market, since actual availability of the cards in the retail space is so constrained. MSI is offering a reward of 100 thousand Yuan for any information that leads to the recovery of the stolen cargo.

As for B460 and H410 motherboards, the BIOS update will be completely released in the next two weeks. Please follow the product pages for the updated BIOS.
Update 10:14 UTC: One of the screenshots provided by MSI in its press release puts out some juicy info about a 11th Gen Core "Rocket Lake" processor ES. Apparently this chip has a multiplier range between 8.0 to 50.0, a nominal clock speed of 3.40 GHz, and 4.30 GHz boost. The CPU-Z screenshot also confirms AVX-512F ISA support. In all likelihood (given that this chip has Rocket Lake's maximum core-count of 8-core/16-thread), this ES could very well be the Core i9-11900.

MSI Pauses Shipments of RTX 30-series SUPRIM X, No Recall in Progress

MSI had paused shipments of its RTX 3090 SUPRIM X and RTX 3080 SUPRIM X graphics cards on suspicion of a quality issue with their cards. Earlier today, a Reddit post by someone who was in queue with a retailer to purchase an RTX 3080 SUPRIM X graphics card was allegedly informed by the retailer that the manufacturer has recalled all inventory of SUPRIM X graphics cards from retailers. We recently reviewed the RTX 3080 SUPRIM X, and reached out to our contacts at MSI to confirm the story, and learned a few new facts. For starters, retailers do not have inventory of the RTX 3080 SUPRIM X or RTX 3090 SUPRIM X as of this writing. Rather, MSI halted shipment of the cards' inventories to retailers to check for a quality issue with the cards. It is now convinced that the cards are fit for shipping, and will resume shippint to retailers.

An MSI product manager we spoke with, had this statement:
In order to ensure the best quality of our new SUPRIM flagship series and to offer you the best Gaming experience, we decided to hold back the shipment for a last minute check. Now we are sure that the quality of our product is optimal and the shipments will recommence.
MSI also stressed that the SUPRIM series cards reviewed by the press, or any inventory already in the market, isn't affected by the issue, and that this is just a case of halting shipments on the suspicion of a quality issue. The SUPRIM line of graphics cards represent MSI's new flagship custom-design line, and the company wants to be doubly sure they're shipping the highest quality cards.

MSI Releases Resizable BAR Support BIOS Updates

MSI, a world-leading motherboard manufacturer, announces support for AMD's new SMART ACCESS MEMORY feature. SMART ACCESS MEMORY is an innovative feature. It allows the system to access the full capacity of the VRAM on the graphics card. Compare to the current solution which has 256 MB access limitation, this feature will provide the users better gaming experience.

For MSI motherboard users, enabling SMART ACCESS MEMORY is quite simple. It only takes a few clicks after updating the BIOS. Go to "Settings > Advanced > PCI Subsystem Settings", enable "Re-size BAR" and "Above 4G memory/Crypto Currency mining", press "F10", to save the settings and reboot. The requirement of this feature is pairing the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics card with AMD Ryzen 5000 series desktop processor. And don't forget to update the graphics card driver to the latest version as well. After these steps, this feature is online and ready to boost the gaming performance.

The two 2 W built-in speakers allow children to listen to audio files or join on-line courses without connecting external speakers or wearing an earphone.

MSI GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3090 SUPRIM X Graphics Cards Ready for Launch

We previously brought you a report on MSI's new graphics card lineup in the form of the SUPRIM X series. The new SKUs will slot in right above the Gaming X graphics cards, supplanting them, and effectively becoming MSI's top models for the foreseeable future. The SUPRIM X series ship with Dual BIOS capabilities (and both GAMING and SILENT modes) and much higher TGP values than the GAMING X Trio series they supplant: the RTX 3090 SUPRIM X is listed with 420 W (+ 70 W over reference, + 50 W over the RTX 3090 GAMING X), while the RTX 3080 SUPRIM X ships with a 370 W (+ 50 W over reference, + 30 W over the RTX 3080 GAMING X).

MSI SUPRIM graphics cards feature a brand new TRI FROZR 2S cooling solution equipped with three TORX 4.0 fans. The graphics card features close quarters heatpipes around the VRM and backplate which is now made of metal, instead of the painted plastic solution that MMSI used on their GAMING X Trio. The cards are expected to be announced come November 20th alongside reviews from some publications, and for now, there is no pricing information.

MSI Registers Eight Custom Models for GeForce RTX 3060 Ti with the EEC

MSI has registered as many as eight custom models based on the NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards with the EEC. Like always, a product registration with this legal body doesn't automatically mean that all models do enter the market - sometimes these are registered in bulk by companies with models that they are planning on releasing and models that they think they might want to release at one point in time, just so that they only enter the paperwork once. However, these entries by MSI are interesting, particularly, because they mention a new MSI model that's likely reserved for below enthusiast-level graphics cards: there are two Twin Fan models (one OC, one absent of it).

All in all, these are the eight models that MSI registered: GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming Trio; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 3X OC; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 3X; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2X OC; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2X; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Twin Fan OC; and the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Twin Fan. Current information places the RTX 3060 Ti as using the same 392 mm², 17.4 B transistor GA104 chip as the RTX 3070, albeit under the GA104-200 nomenclature; the chip is expected to leverage 4,864 CUDA cores, 152 Tensor Cores, and 38 RT Cores (the RTX 3070 features 5888, 184, and 46 of these respectively). This makes out a 21% difference in number of execution units, which certainly won't make out to a full 21% performance difference. The card is expected to launch on December 2nd.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 457.30 WHQL Drivers

NVIDIA today released the GeForce 457.30 WHQL drivers. The drivers come "game ready" (optimized) for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Godfall. The SLI profile for Black Desert has also been updated. The drivers also add G-Sync support for the Acer CP3271U V, Asus XG27AQ, MSI MAG274QR and Xiaomi Mi 245 HF monitors.

Among the bugs fixed with this release are a drop in performance during gameplay for Warzone; a laptop-only error where the internal panel flashes upon resume from sleep mode or from display off; and a bug specific for Ampere, in a G-SYNC, HDR, Dual-head 8K display environment where the display screen goes black. Get the drivers from the link below.

Fire Breaks Out in MSI's Bao'an Shenzhen Factory

A major fire accident occurred on the afternoon of November 5, 2020, at an MSI factory located in the Bao'an district of Shenzhen, China, which is about a 30-minute drive from the HKSAR border. MSI reports that nobody was injured in the accident, and that the production line was "not affected," although a video emerged on Reddit showing a large plume of smoke emerging from the factory. The company initiated industry-standard fire emergency response, and called in the Fire Department. The company reports that production has resumed in the factory. It's unknown what MSI manufactures in Bao'an, but given that notebooks and pre-built desktops are assembled in the Kunshan district of Shanghai, it's likely that the Bao'an factory assembles graphics cards and motherboards.
