Crucial Discovers Flaw in AMD X670E Motherboards: Gen 5 NVMe Slots Drop to Gen 1 Speeds, Cause Boot Issues

Memory and SSD maker Crucial noticed an uptick in support requests by users claiming that their Gen 5 or Gen 4 NVMe SSDs would drop to PCIe Gen 1 speeds, besides being unable to boot into Windows after a restart. Crucial then did some digging, and localized the issue to users with motherboards based on the AMD X670E chipset, AMD's flagship Socket AM5 platform chipset. While not a function of the chipset itself, it turns out that there is a flaw in the way AMD designed the PCI-Express I/O of the X670E platform, specifically the PCIe Gen 5-capable M.2 NVMe interfaces that are attached to the CPU, causing them to drop in speeds to Gen 1. This problem isn't surfacing on the AMD B650 or the B650E, or even the X670—it is oddly specific to the X670E, despite the Gen 5 M.2 NVMe slots not being wired to the chipset.

While AMD made no public statement on the technical aspect of the flaw, if we were to guess, this could be a faulty implementation of PCIe ASPM (active state power management) at the firmware level, which reduces the speed of the PCIe link layer to reduce power. The default setting for PCIe ASPM in most motherboard UEFI setup programs tends to be "disabled," although there could be a bug in the firmware of X670E motherboards, causing it to engage, and in a buggy manner. Most UEFI BIOS setup programs tend to have two separate sets of PCIe ASPM settings—one for the CPU-attached PCIe root (which includes the x16 PEG and CPU-attached NVMe slots), and the other for downstream PCIe connectivity from the chipset.

NVIDIA RTX 5090 "Blackwell" Could Feature Two 16-pin Power Connectors

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang never misses an opportunity to remind us that Moore's Law is cooked, and that future generations of logic hardware will only get larger and hotter, or hungrier for power. NVIDIA's next generation "Blackwell" graphics architecture promises to bring certain architecture-level performance/Watt improvements, coupled with the node-level performance/Watt improvements from the switch to the TSMC 4NP (4 nm-class) node. Even so, the GeForce RTX 5090, or the part that succeeds the current RTX 4090, will be a power hungry GPU, with rumors suggesting the need for two 16-pin power inputs.

TweakTown reports that the RTX 5090 could come with two 16-pin power connectors, which should give the card the theoretical ability to pull 1200 W (continuous). This doesn't mean that the GPU's total graphics power (TGP) is 1200 W, but a number close to or greater than 600 W, which calls for two of these connectors. Even if the TGP is exactly 600 W, NVIDIA would want to deploy two inputs, to spread the load among two connectors, and improve physical resilience of the connector. It's likely that both connectors will have 600 W input capability, so end-users don't mix up connectors should one of them be 600 W and the other keyed to 150 W or 300 W.

MSI's Upcoming MEG Z890 Unify-X Motherboard Leaks Ahead of Launch

Detailed specifications and a somewhat blurry slide showing off all the details of MSI's upcoming high-end MEG Z890 Unify-X motherboard have leaked courtesy of @ChamberTech_ on X/Twitter. The motherboard is likely to appeal to those looking to squeeze every extra bit of performance out of their new Ultra 200K series CPU when they launch next month. You get support for memory speeds of up to 10,000 MT/s and with only two DIMM slots, it might be able to go even higher with the latest DDR5 CUDIMMs. The board also sports a 110 Ampere 20+1+1+1 VRM design on an eight layer PCB, and it also ships with what MSI calls an OC Tuning Controller, suggesting the board is targeting overclockers.

MSI has included a pair of PCIe 5.0 x16 slots for GPUs that presumably operate in dual x8 mode when both slots are in use, and a third PCIe 4.0 x16 slot that operates in x4 mode, as well as a single PCIe 4.0 x1 slot. There's also no less than six M.2 slots, of which two are PCIe 5.0 and one PCIe 4.0, as well as six SATA ports. Where things get a bit interesting is in the network connectivity, as the slide claims that the board features a 5 Gbps Intel Killer Ethernet interface, which is the first we've heard of such a thing, as well as an Intel Killer Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 module for wireless connectivity.

MSI Intros GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 Ventus Series Graphics Cards

MSI today joined ASUS and GALAX in quietly launching GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards with 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory replacing the standard 21 Gbps GDDR6X on the regular RTX 4070. The company launched these cards under its value custom-design Ventus series. There are four models in all—the smaller Ventus 2X, the larger Ventus 3X, and their OC variants featuring a minor factory overclock. The box-art of these cards displays "GDDR6" next to the memory size, so you know what you're buying. Their model numbers have the extension "E1" (eg: MSI RTX 4070 Ventus 2X E1), as an additional marker for the GDDR6 memory type.

The Ventus 2X card features a dual-fan cooling solution. It measures 24.2 cm in length, 12.5 cm in height, and is strictly 2 slots thick. The regular variant features a 2475 MHz GPU Boost frequency, while the OC variant offers 2505 MHz. The MSI Center app unlocks higher 1-click OC speeds on both cards. The Ventus 3X comes with a longer triple-fan cooling solution that measures 30.8 cm in length, 12 cm in height, and like the Ventus 2X, is strictly 2 slots thick. The regular Ventus 3X offers 2475 MHz boost frequency, while the Ventus 3X OC offers 2505 MHz. The Ventus 2X meets NVIDIA's SFF-Ready card requirements, while the Ventus 3X misses this by a whisker, of just 4 mm. Testing by Wccftech shows that there is barely a 1-2% performance delta between the RTX 4070 GDDR6 and the original RTX 4070 at 1440p (the card's intended resolution), and although the cards are launching at prices similar to the original RTX 4070, the cheaper memory type could let NVIDIA partners reduce street prices over time.
