Zephyr x VK Valkyrie GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Revealed

Zephyr and VK Valkyrie have collaborated on a very high-end custom GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER graphics card model, as revealed in a teaser video posted to the former's Bilibili account. VK Valkyrie is a well regarded DIY brand in the Chinese PC gaming market, while Zephyr is a relatively young manufacturer—their unusual GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Compact ITX design with a pink PCB was introduced last summer. TPU's June 2023 news report is featured prominently within their website's news section—greatly appreciated! The Zephyr x VK Valkyrie GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER will be a limited edition release—the two partners have been working together since last August, but a specific launch date and pricing were not revealed in Zephyr's teaser trailer.

Zephyr has, so far, only released air-cooled custom graphics cards—their upcoming VK Valkyrie collaborative model will mark a debut entry into liquid cooled territory. Their chunky 3-slot design consists of a substantial heatsink covered by an RGB-adorned silver shroud and metallic backplate, with an AIO liquid cooling solution. A 280 mm radiator (with 2 x 140 mm fans) is hooked up to the card via twin white braided tubes. A rear-firing 12VHPWR connector provides an elegant means of semi-concealing your 90-degree power cable, if need be. The promotional video includes benchmark results generated by 3DMARK Speed Way, Time Spy Extreme, and Fire Strike Ultra suites (check the relevant screenshot below). Zephyr claims that their limited edition GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER model was cool enough to not exceed 52 degrees Celsius during a heavy Furmark session. The company recommends that interested parties should check its social media accounts for further announcements. The Zephyr x VK Valkyrie GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER could arrive at some point after the Chinese Spring Celebration.

Update Feb 9th: Valkyrie informed us that, for the moment, this collaboration is specific to the Chinese Market, but they are discussing options internally whether it makes sense to bring the card to the West, too."

NVIDIA Readies RTX TrueHDR, Converts SDR Games to HDR in Real-time using AI

NVIDIA is giving finishing touches to a new feature called RTX TrueHDR. This was discovered by a user on NexusMods, who went ahead and published a mod based on it. This is essentially a driver-level utility that converts SDR games to HDR in real-time by leveraging the generative AI capabilities of GeForce RTX GPUs and their Tensor cores. From the looks of it, it appears to be a derivative of RTX Video HDR enhancement, except it works with the lossless output of a game. A vast selection of gaming monitors these days come with at least DisplayHDR 400 capability and the ability to display HDR content; which gives NVIDIA a sizable market to address with RTX TrueHDR. There's no word on when NVIDIA plans to release this feature, but it could only be a matter of time (weeks, if not months), given that NVIDIA drivers are already capable of SDR-to-HDR conversion technologies.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER FE Sports Fewer Power Phases Than Non-SUPER Model

A video review has highlighted some curious internal changes on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Founders Edition graphics card—Geekerwan has discovered that the board design has been "updated" to a small degree, when cross examined with the non-SUPER variant. Team Green engineers have chosen to decrease the number of phases from 13 to 11, while the memory phase count goes from 3 down to 2. HXL (@9550pro) TLDR-ed the situation on social media: "4080 Super FE vs 4080 FE: Core: -2 phase & VRAM: -1 phase." Tech experts have also noticed that the new SUPER FE's board does not have a phase near to its power connector. VideoCardz found these changes to be a little bit odd, considering that the card arrives with faster memory and a increased core count.

Geekerwan reckons that NVIDIA has implemented these internal adjustments in an effort to reduce power consumption in gaming scenarios. The official comparison table confirms this ambition—in the "Average Gaming Power" category we see the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER target 246 W, and GeForce RTX 4080 (non-SUPER) aim for 251 W. The reviewer notes that their ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 4080 SUPER GAMING sample card features the same power layout as its non-SUPER sibling. They believe that NVIDIA's Founders Edition is the only model bearing an adjusted phase tally—while Team Green's board partners have simply rolled out the previous RTX 4080 layout.

ASUS Readies GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16 GB Noctua OC Edition

ASUS has quietly updated its product web presences with another Noctua collaboration OC Edition graphics card—the heavily customized GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16 GB GDDR6X model looks very familiar (in shades of brown); we suspect that the existing cooling solution, shroud and backplate designs have been transplanted from the existing RTX 4080 (non-SUPER) Noctua OC model. W1zzard was impressed by the 2022 version's affixing of twin Noctua NF-A12x25 fans, although a number of factors caused the ultra premium air-cooled ASUS card to miss out on an Editor's Choice award—mainly the $1650 launch price—perhaps deserving of an updated/retrospective "But Expensive" badge of honor.

VideoCardz believes that the SUPER iteration could launch with $200 subtracted (at a minimum) from the non-SUPER's original MSRP—the ASUS listing, naturally, does not provide any details regarding recommended retail pricing or a release date. It seems that reviewers have not received SUPER 16 GB Noctua OC Edition samples this month, so we suspect that the chunky brown Ada Lovelace monster will reach retail at some point later on in the first quarter of 2024.

Chinese Vendors are Offering NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080M and RTX 4090M as Desktop GPUs

According to the recent listing on Goofish, discovered by VideoCardz, Chinese companies have begun selling mobile versions of NVIDIA's latest RTX 40-series GPUs as desktop graphics cards. Initially designed for gaming laptops, the GeForce RTX 4080M and RTX 4090M are now being marketed in China as more affordable alternatives to their official desktop counterparts. This development is no surprise to industry observers who recall similar adaptations with the RTX 20 and 30 series. These companies are leveraging the lower cost of mobile GPUs, combined with budget cooling solutions and simpler PCB designs, to offer more affordable desktop GPU options. The mobile GPUs, which are capped at a power consumption of 175 Watts, are being repurposed without official sanction, with NVIDIA seemingly disregarding this practice. Despite the lack of official endorsement, these modified GPUs are finding their way into the market, providing gamers a cost-effective alternative to the more expensive desktop versions.

While not officially supported by NVIDIA, these cards utilize the mobile GPU dies paired with custom cooling solutions and PCBs to work in desktop PCs. According to reports, the RTX 4080M desktop variant offers 7424 CUDA cores and 12 GB GDDR6 memory, representing a 24% reduction in cores and 4 GB less memory versus the desktop RTX 4080. The desktop RTX 4090M is even more cut-down, with 9728 cores and 16 GB memory—a 40% drop in cores and 8 GB less memory than the flagship RTX 4090 desktop card. Pricing falls between $420 and $560 for the RTX 4080M and exceeds that of even the desktop RTX 4090 for the 4090M variant. Performance and longevity still need to be determined for these unofficial cards. While they present a cheaper RTX 40-series option for Chinese gamers, the reduced specifications come with tradeoffs. Still, their availability indicates the ongoing demand for next-gen GPUs and the lengths some vendors go to to meet that demand.

GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Custom Model Pricing Leaked by UK & Finland Shops

A couple of custom design prices emerged over the past weekend—courtesy of VideoCardz's determined approach to unearth GeForce RTX 40 SUPER-related information prior to a staggered lifting of NVIDIA review embargoes. Their most recent investigation has pulled details from the Overclockers UK retail site, as well as Jimm's PC-Store in Finland. The article first focuses on the British e-tailer's tendency to tack on an extra couple of Pounds (£/GBP) when charging for top-flight GPU options—a prime example being their £1350 asking price for a very-tricked out ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 4080 SUPER OC card. NVIDIA's basic guide MSRP for the UK is £959, so we are looking at a steep £391 premium/upcharge for the high-end ASUS model. Overclockers has removed this particular listing and other SUPER-related pages from their site. ZOTAC Gaming's GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Trinity Black Edition card was spotted sitting at £959 on OC UK, which is line with the company's promise to keep non-overclocked models locked in at NVIDIA MSRP.

Jimm's PC Store in Finland has not removed listings for various customized Ada Lovelace SUPER options (at the time of writing). VideoCardz noted that Finnish customers pay a natural premium for PC hardware, due to greater VAT demands in the region (when compared to other European countries)—RTX 4080 SUPER MSRP here is reportedly €1149 instead of €1109. GIGABYTE's GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER AORUS MASTER graphics card is the true headliner here, in terms of Euros. At a smidge below €1360, this represents a hefty premium of €211 over the Finnish MSRP. The next most expensive option is a stealthy looking MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER SUPRIM X card, coming in at €1299.90. Four RTX 4080 SUPER models sit at the Finnish MSRP of €1149—two GIGABYTE WINDFORCEs, an MSI VENTUS 3X OC, and an ASUS TUF Gaming card. VideoCardz took a peek further down in the hierarchy, please check out the entire article for (less controversial) leaked pricing regarding GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER options.

Possible NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB Edition Specifications Appear

Alleged full specifications leaked for NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB graphics card show extensive reductions beyond merely reducing memory size versus the 8 GB model. If accurate, performance could lag the existing RTX 3050 8 GB SKU by up to 25%, making it weaker competition even for AMD's budget RX 6500 XT. Previous rumors suggested only capacity and bandwidth differences on a partially disabled memory bus between 3050 variants, which would reduce the memory to 6 GB and 96-bit bus, from 8 GB and 128-bit bus.. But leaked specs indicate CUDA core counts, clock speeds, and TDP all see cuts for the upcoming 6 GB version. With 18 SMs and 2304 cores rather than 20 SMs and 2560 cores at lower base and boost frequencies, the impact looks more severe than expected. A 70 W TDP does allow passive cooling but hurts performance versus the 3050 8 GB's 130 W design.

Some napkin math suggests the 3050 6 GB could deliver only 75% of its elder sibling's frame rates, putting it more in line with the entry-level 6500 XT. While having 50% more VRAM helps, dramatic core and clock downgrades counteract that memory advantage. According to rumors, the RTX 3050 6 GB is set to launch in February, bringing lower-end Ampere to even more budget-focused builders. But with specifications seemingly hobbled beyond just capacity, its real-world gaming value remains to be determined. NVIDIA likely intends RTX 3060 6 GB primarily for less demanding esports titles. Given the scale of cutbacks and the modern AAA title's recommended specifications, mainstream AAA gaming performance seems improbable.
