AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) today announced revenue for the third quarter of 2023 of $5.8 billion, gross margin of 47%, operating income of $224 million, net income of $299 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.18. On a non-GAAP basis, gross margin was 51%, operating income was $1.3 billion, net income was $1.1 billion and diluted earnings per share was $0.70.

There have been several rumours about AMD's upcoming RX 6750 GRE graphics cards, which may or maybe not be limited to the Chinese market. Details have now appeared of not one, but two different RX 6750 GRE SKUs, courtesy of @momomo_us on Twitter/X and it seems like AMD has simply re-branded the RX 6700 XT and RX 6700, adjusted the clock speed minimally and slapped a new cooler on the cards. To call this disappointing would be an understatement, but then again, these cards weren't expected to bring anything new to the table.

The fact that AMD is calling the cards the RX 6750 GRE 10 GB and RX 6750 GRE 12 GB will help confuse consumers as well, especially when you consider the two cards were clearly different SKUs when they launched as the RX 6700 and RX 6700 XT. Now it just looks like one has las VRAM than the other, when in fact it also has a different GPU. At least the pricing difference between the two SKUs is minimal, with the 10 GB model having an MSRP of US$269 and the 12 GB model coming in at a mere $20 more, at US$289. The RX 6700 XT had a launch price of US$479 and still retails for over US$300, which at least makes these refreshed products somewhat more wallet friendly.

With the release of AMD Software Adrenalin drivers version 23.10.1 WHQL, AMD has added Anti-Lag+ support for Counter Strike 2, but it appears that this will only result in a VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) ban. Apparently, the Anti-Lag+ feature is implemented by detouring engine dll functions, and any tampering with CS code will result in a VAC ban.

Valve was keen to note that once AMD ships an update, it will work on identifying affected users and reversing the ban. Luckily, the Anti-Lag+ technology only works on Radeon RX 7000 series RDNA 3 graphics cards, so it could be a limited number of Counter Strike 2 players. The issue comes as a surprise considering that Anti-Lag+ has already been implemented in various games, including competitive ones like Apex Legends, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Fortnite, and others, and only has issues with Counter Strike 2 and its VAC system. Hopefully, AMD will fix the issue pretty soon and we will keep an eye out for an update.

According to the editorial blog post published on the Samsung blog by SangJoon Hwang, Executive Vice President and Head of the DRAM Product & Technology Team at Samsung Electronics, we have information that High-Bandwidth Memory 4 (HBM4) is coming in 2025. In the recent timeline of HBM development, we saw the first appearance of HBM memory in 2015 with the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X. The second-generation HBM2 appeared with NVIDIA Tesla P100 in 2016, and the third-generation HBM3 saw the light of the day with NVIDIA Hopper GH100 GPU in 2022. Currently, Samsung has developed 9.8 Gbps HBM3E memory, which will start sampling to customers soon.

However, Samsung is more ambitious with development timelines this time, and the company expects to announce HBM4 in 2025, possibly with commercial products in the same calendar year. Interestingly, the HBM4 memory will have some technology optimized for high thermal properties, such as non-conductive film (NCF) assembly and hybrid copper bonding (HCB). The NCF is a polymer layer that enhances the stability of micro bumps and TSVs in the chip, so memory solder bump dies are protected from shock. Hybrid copper bonding is an advanced semiconductor packaging method that creates direct copper-to-copper connections between semiconductor components, enabling high-density, 3D-like packaging. It offers high I/O density, enhanced bandwidth, and improved power efficiency. It uses a copper layer as a conductor and oxide insulator instead of regular micro bumps to increase the connection density needed for HBM-like structures.

AMD has released the AMD Software Adrenalin Edition Preview Driver which add support for AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technical preview which is available in several games and only works on AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards. AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) will be available as a part of FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0 (FSR3), which is expected to launch tomorrow and supported in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum games.

AMD has updated its Radeon Adrenalin driver with the latest edition, 23.9.2. The newest version brings unified driver support for AMD Radeon RX 7700 and RX 7800, which the previous driver lacked, and there was a separate download for these two SKUs. Besides merging into a single unified driver, the new update brings Lies of P, Party Animals, and The Crew Motorfest game support for AMD Radeon graphics. AMD fixed some issues like application crashing while playing Baldur Gate 3 with Vulkan API on RX 7900 XTX, limited GPU clock tuning on RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, application crash while playing SMITE on RX 7900 XTX, and application crash or driver timeout while playing F1 2023 on RX 7800 XT. There is no Cyberpunk 2077 update yet in this driver release.

We heard murmurings back in early August about a slightly disappointing future for RDNA 4—multiple sources claimed that AMD had dropped development of a Navi 31 successor. Rumored reasons included "a cost justification of developing high-end GPUs to push enough volumes over the product lifecycle," as well as the apparent complexity of chiplet designs making it difficult to climb up the ladder of generational performance improvements.

The "narrowed" RDNA 4 product lineup is said to only encompass Navi 43 and Navi 44 GPUs, with a heavier focus on mid-range offerings. Lately, Bits And Chips has decided to pile on with another theory, likely obtained from their favored inside source: "AMD will sacrifice next Radeon gaming GPUs (RX 8000) output at TSMC in order to pump up FPGA and GPGPU production." The AI hardware market is in a boom phase, and Team Red is keen to catch up with NVIDIA—past reports have suggested that Team Green production priorities have shifted away GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs, in favor of an output uptick of "immensely profitable" H100 AI GPUs. Is AMD simply copying the market leader's homework?

PowerColor has registered a significant number of AMD Radeon RX 7000-series SKUs with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC)—these enrollments are seemingly always a good source of pre-launch information. Naturally, the ever reliable harukaze5719 has reported on this latest filing. The most interesting new SKUs within this leak appear to be Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics cards lined up in Hellhound and Fighter flavors—perhaps an early hint of Team Red prepping different versions of existing RDNA 3 GPUs. Scott Herkelman, AMD's senior vice president, stated last month that no new RX 7000-series ASICs were in the pipeline. The already released Radeon RX 7600 8 GB GPU is the sole entry within its lower end gaming segment for the current generation.

Technical information is not included with EEC filings, so we can only speculate about the choice of Navi 3x GPU with these leaked XT variants. VideoCardz has questioned the slightly peculiar allocations of 10 GB and 12 GB VRAM specs: "(raising) questions about AMD's choice of GPU architecture. One possibility is that they are using the Navi 33 with unusual 96-bit and 80-bit memory configurations, although this seems counterintuitive as it would result in lower memory bandwidth compared to the RX 7600. The Navi 33 GPU is typically limited to a 128-bit memory interface." Alternatively, they also propose that a "heavily cut-down Navi 32 GPU" could exist that "grants 192/160-bit memory." SKUs based on AMD's unreleased Radeon RX 6750 Golden Rabbit Edition (GRE) GPU are also visible within PowerColor's registration, also sporting 10 GB and 12 GB video memory configurations. Additionally, the Taiwanese graphics card specialist appears to be preparing a couple of white and SAKURA edition Radeon RX 7800 XT and 7700 XT cards.

EXP Review reported on Sapphire selling a new special edition Radeon RX 7600 8 GB graphics card on China's JD.com online store—the custom design sports a very loud orange shroud replete with cat, dog, crocodile, sloth and rabbit graphics. It appears to be a slight reworking of Sapphire's Pulse RX 7600 OC 8 GB card, albeit with a fancy paint job that looks to celebrate the upcoming launch (September 20) of "Party Animals," a physics-based brawler/party game.

The Party Animals edition card is retailing for 2199 RMB (~$301), which is 200 RMB (~$27) more expensive than the standard Pulse/Platinum version—with identical base, game and boost clock speeds. A digital copy of the game is bundled with each purchase, as well as an exclusive in-game "Rocket" skin for the Nemo dog character. Sapphire's colorful Radeon graphics card is currently not in stock—we are not certain whether this lack of availability is down to popularity or a supply shortage, since it is difficult to ascertain information from the JD.com listing. EXP Review acknowledges that Sapphire launched this special edition product with little fanfare in China, so it remains to be seen whether any examples will reach Western outlets.

Sapphire is so far the only AMD add-in-board (AIB) partner to show a reference design for the upcoming Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card. Sapphire has previously revealed a couple of models, including those in its NITRO, PURE, and PULSE series, for both the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the Radeon RX 7700 XT.

The AMD reference design, also known as the AMD MBA (Made by AMD) design, will be available directly from AMD's own official webstore, and so far Sapphire is the only partner to carry such a design. Sapphire is keeping it simple and does not apparently include even a sticker, so you'll be getting the same version that AMD has envisioned. Of course, some custom versions with triple-fan coolers might perform better than AMD's own reference design, and we are sure that the AMD AIB partners will implement factory-overclocked settings on some of its premium versions, like the NITRO+ lineup from Sapphire.

ITHome has picked up on interesting retail activity in China, where AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT graphics cards are deeply discounted. This seems to correspond to a possible discontinuation of Team Red's Navi 23 XT GPU—a Board Channel source stated: "AMD factory has stopped production of a certain GPU. At the present time, shipments from all AIB brands have stopped with inventory being cleared. AMD has stopped production for the Radeon RX 6650 XT, and nearly all brands will have their inventory cleared by the end of September." Board partners in China appear to running sales promotions, with cards reduced from an original MSRP of 3099 RMB ($425) down to as low as 1739 RMB (~$240), although these adjusted prices are mostly hovering around the 2000 RMB (~$275) mark.

AMD recently declared that its Radeon RX 7000 desktop lineup is now complete, following the unveiling of mid-range RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT cards at last week's Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany. Their low-to-mid tier Radeon RX 7600 card, based on the Navi 33 XL GPU, is the sole successor to multiple RDNA 2 predecessors (RX 6600, 6600 XT & 6650 XT). AMD and its board partners are likely prioritizing larger scale RDNA 3 production, so the latest batch of GPU industry insider information is not all that surprising. Tom's Hardware points out that: "there is hardly any point for AMD to continue production of Navi 23. The company's RDNA 3-based Navi 33 GPU integrates 13.3 billion transistors, has 2048 SPs, and performs better than its direct predecessor. Meanwhile, it has a smaller die size (204 mm² vs 237 mm²) and is made on TSMC's N6 process technology (as opposed to N7 in the case of Navi 23), so it may well be cheaper to produce."

MicroCenter has reduced the price of PowerColor's Fighter Radeon RX 7600 graphics card to $229, representing a nice $40 saving over the original launch price of $269. A digital download version of Bethesda's upcoming epic, Starfield, is also included as a bundled incentive (Standard Edition is worth $69.99) to purchase the budget friendly model that is based on Team Red's Navi 33 XL GPU.

The offer is limited to in-store purchases—it seems that MicroCenter has nullified the option to get the discounted PowerColor Fighter card delivered to your address of choice. Other retailers in North America appear to be selling Radeon RX 7600 cards for around $260. This price bracket is also occupied by Intel's Arc A750 and A770 8 GB models, following consistent price cuts in order to attract cautious buyers to the nascent Alchemist GPU architecture.

Scott Herkelman, senior vice president and general manager of AMD's Graphics Business Unit made a slightly unexpected announcement during an IGN live streamed discussion at Gamescom 2023. Following the official unveiling of Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT GPUs on Friday, Herkelman sat down for a brief interview regarding the future of Team Red's RDNA 3 generation—he was asked whether there were any additional Radeon RX 7000-series models on the horizon. In response he stated: "Well, the RDNA3 portfolio is now complete. Of all products that we have planned to launch, that is, this is the last few products that we will launch. We may have some different versions, but they are not a new ASIC…It's been a journey, it's been about a year since we launched the very first RDNA 3 and now we are a year later finishing up the series. We should be done, we are done and we are excited. And now I think we have a broad spectrum covered for people who want RDNA 3 up and down the price tag."

His announcement seemingly confirms that Team Red is satisfied enough to conclude RDNA 3 post the September 6 launch of their Navi 32-based Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT cards, with a grand total of a mere six desktop-oriented SKUs—Herkelman perhaps forgot to mention possible mobile variants. This is slightly odd given that non-XT Radeon RX 7800 and 7700 GPUs have cropped up via leaks in the recent past, and speculation has also pointed to a true entry-level RX 7500 model being in the works. Herkelman hinted that refreshed variants could be released down the road, perhaps akin to the mid-gen update of existing RDNA 2 ASICs (e.g RX 6700 XT -> RX 6750 XT). AMD may rely on its previous generation Radeon technology to fill in the gaps not occupied by RDNA 3—it is believed that an RX 6750 GRE graphics card (RX 6700 non-XT variant) is in the pipeline.

Yeston is reported to be returning to an older Sakura cooler design for its forthcoming AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and 7700 XT custom graphic cards, as well as a new GeForce RTX 4070 model. The Chinese brand continues to distinguish itself from other graphics card manufacturers with bold aesthetics and bright pastel colors, which also extends to its choice of printed circuit boards. The yet-to-be-released Sakura RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT models are set to be the first Navi 32 silicon-based cards to sport white PCBs and I/O brackets. The Yeston design team has made adjustments to the original cooling solution's dimensions—the updated Sakura shroud is now longer (by 3.4 cm) and a bit chunkier (refer to their diagram below) with larger cooling fans attached—VideoCardz posits that the "diameter increased from 83 mm to 91 mm."

Yeston has not published full details about specs, pricing or regional availability for their latest RDNA 3 cards—it has been quite difficult to procure their very unique looking cards outside of the company's home base of China, although Newegg has reportedly managed to sell price-inflated stock of older models in North America. We expect to see more information disclosed by Yeston closer to AMD's officially mandated launch date of September 6 for the much needed mid-range Radeon RX 7000-series entries.
