Two OCZ RevoDrive 350 Striped in Soft-RAID, Put out 3.7 GBps

OCZ showed off its latest high-performance SSD for the consumer market, built in the full-height PCI-Express add-on card form-factor, the RevoDrive 350. The drive features a PCI-Express 2.0 x8 bus interface, and several SSD subunits making up a host-agnostic RAID 0 array; which is bootable. OCZ claims sequential transfer speeds of up to 1,800 MB/s, with 4K random access throughputs of up to 140,000 IOPS, for its top-end 480 GB and 960 GB variants. The company set up a soft-RAID using two of these drives, and put it through popular synthetic benchmarks. It scored as high as 3,752 MB/s in one test.

HyperX Releases Impact SO-DIMMs, FURY SSD at COMPUTEX TAIPEI

HyperX, a division of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the launch of HyperX Impact memory for gamers and enthusiasts who want to upgrade and boost performance in their laptops and small form factor PCs. OCZ Vector 180 SSD PCB Pictured

Here are some of the first pictures of OCZ Vector 180, the company's upcoming high-end consumer SSD in the 2.5-inch form-factor, with SATA 6 Gb/s interface. This drive is so durable and resistant to bad power, that OCZ is classifying it as both consumer-enthusiast and entry-enterprise (fit for servers). The drive features OCZ-Indilinx Barefoot 3 M00 series processor, with what appears to be LPDDR3 cache, and a power-outage mitigating logic. When it senses a power-outage or unstable power, the drive finishes all outstanding read/write operations under power from of a capacitor bank, and "parks" itself, to prevent data loss. It features Toshiba MLC NAND flash built on the 19 nm silicon fabrication process. The drive comes in capacities of up to 960 GB, and offers sequential transfer rates of up to 550 MB/s, and 4K random access throughput of up to 100,000 IOPS.

Apacer Mashes a DDR3 DIMM with an M.2 SSD

In what could be a boon for mini-ITX PC builders, Apacer created a new line of DDR3 memory modules that come with M.2 slots. Called Apacer Combo-SDIMM, the contraption puts a DDR3 DIMM and M.2 slot onto the same PCB. The DRAM portion is restricted to half the module's height, while the other half takes up the M.2 slot. Sadly, the M.2 slot is wired to through its SATA link layer, and not PCIe, so your SSDs are capped at 6 Gb/s speeds. Points for the engineering, though.

Galaxy Unveils Captain Line of mSATA and M.2 SSDs

Galaxy unveiled its Captain line of mSATA and M.2 SSDs. Both the Captain-mSATA and the Captain-MAC (M.2) are based on a JMicron-made controller, with Intel-made MLC NAND flash. Both the Captain-mSATA and Captain-MAC come in capacities of up to 256 GB, offering sequential speeds of up to 520 MB/s reads, with up to 275 MB/s writes. Their 4K random read performance is rated at 72,000 IOPS, and 4K random writes at 70,000 IOPS. It's important to note here, that the Captain-MAC may feature an NGFF interface, but runs on a SATA 6 Gb/s link layer. It's one of the many examples of M.2 SSDs that have crept into the industry, with such an interface.

Silicon Motion SM2246EN SSD Controller Supports Micron's 16 nm MLC NAND

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation, a global leader in designing and marketing NAND flash controllers for solid state storage devices, today announced that its SM2246EN SATA (6 Gb/s) client SSD controller now supports Micron's 16 nm 128 gigabit (Gb) MLC NAND flash, ideal for high performance, high capacity SSD solutions up to 1 Terabyte.

SM2246EN offers the best performance and power combination of four channel SATA 6 Gb/s client SSD controller in the market, delivering even better performance than most 8-channel SSD controllers with substantially lower power consumption. Using Micron's 128 Gb 16 nm MLC NAND, the SM2246EN delivers up to 538 MB/s sequential read performance and 450 MB/s sequential write, as well as up to 67,000 random read IOPS and 65,000* random write IOPS. In addition, with Micron 128 Gb 16 nm MLC NAND, the SM2246EN delivers ultra-low power consumption, equating to about 30% lower than the average power consumption of other SSD controllers.

Plextor Shows off M6G Line of M.2 SSDs

Plextor also showed off the M6G line of M.2 SSDs, available in various shapes (module lengths) and sizes (capacities). Although built in the M.2 form-factor, the drives feature 6 Gb/s SATA link layer, running over the interface. The lineup consists of the M6G-2242, which comes in capacities of 64 GB and 128 GB, featuring DRAM caches of 1 GB DDR3 and 2 GB DDR3, respectively; and offering sequential transfer rates of 520/160 MB/s (read/write) and 520/210 MB/s, respectively. Next up, is the M6G-2260, which comes in capacities of 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB; featuring 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and 768 MB of DDR3 DRAM caches, respectively; and transfer rates of 520/175 MB/s, 520/360 MB/s, 520/450 MB/s, and 520/450 MB/s, respectively. These drives feature 60 mm module length. Their 80 mm long cousins are the M6G-2280, featuring the same exact capacities, and other specifications.

WD to Demonstrate First PCI Express Hard Drives at Computex 2014

WD, a Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) company, and world leader in storage solutions, will be demonstrating the first PCI Express hard drives at Computex Taipei, June 3-4, 2014. Enabled with key technology partners, WD's prototype introduces the new SATA Express interface, a form of PCI Express technology, which is offered on recently launched Intel series-9 chipset motherboard platforms. The SATA Express interface provides a roadmap for faster speeds, lower power consumption and increased flexibility for future OEM designs.

The road to the world's first demonstration of SATA Express has been in development for almost 3 years. In 2011, SATA-IO, the group responsible for charting the future of SATA, announced that it was developing a new specification that would fundamentally change the core technology behind SATA by melding it with the more advanced PCI Express computer interface. In 2013, the SATA Express specification was announced; and just one year later, WD and selected partners have realized a prototype of what is expected to be the next generation of storage technology.

Crucial Introduces the MX100 Solid State Drive

GeIL Shows off ZENITH Line of High-Performance SSDs

GeIL stepped into the modern SSD scene with its ZENITH line of SSDs. The series consists of two models, the performance-focused ZENITH S3, and the value-focused ZENITH A3. Both are built in the 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch form-factor, with SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and both come in capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB. Both appear to be powered by Seagate-SandForce controllers, and MLC NAND flash memory. The ZENITH A3 offers sequential transfer rates of up to 540 MB/s reads, with up to 300 MB/s writes; while the ZENITH S3 offers up to 550 MB/s reads, with up to 500 MB/s writes.

Intel X99 Chipset Motherboards Unlikely at Computex

Intel's next-generation HEDT (high end desktop) platform, consisting of Core i7 "Haswell-E" processors and X99 Express chipset motherboards, are unlikely to get a showing at Computex 2014, according to an OCWorkbench report, which has its feet on the ground in Taipei. What makes this development surprising, is that Intel is expected to launch the platform in the second half of 2014, and after Computex, the company won't get another major tradeshow until 2015 International CES, slated for January. What's even more surprising, is that Intel has already launched 9-series motherboards for socket LGA1150, that are designed to support its 14 nm Core "Broadwell" mainline processors. According to the report, Intel will have its motherboard partners focus on already launched Z97 Express and H97 Express motherboards, with a focus on the platform's support for M.2 and SATA-Express interfaces, that enable a new generation of faster SSDs.

Crucial MX100 SSD Specifications Appear Online

We're still a few days away from the official unveiling of MX100 solid state drive but thanks to a distributor jumping the gun we already have the full scoop on Crucial's latest creation. As previously revealed, the MX100 is set to be the first SSD equipped with Micron's 16 nm MLC NAND flash memory but not all models will have the 16 nm NAND - the 128 GB drive will pack 20 nm chips, while the 256 GB and 512 GB versions will have 16 nm flash.

All three MX100 drives come in a 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch chassis (a 9.5 mm adapter is included), and have a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface, a Marvell 88SS9189 controller, and are backed by a three-year warranty.

Samsung Starts Mass Producing Industry's First 32-Layer 3D V-NAND Flash Memory

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing the industry's first three-dimensional (3D) V-NAND flash memory using 32 vertically stacked cell layers, which is its second generation V-NAND offering. Samsung's 32-layer 3D V-NAND - also referred to as Vertical NAND - requires a higher level of design technology to stack the cell arrays than the previous 24-layer V-NAND, yet delivers much greater production efficiency because Samsung can use essentially the same equipment it used for production of the first generation V-NAND.

At Computex, ADATA is planning to unveil some of its first enterprise SSD in recent times, beginning with the SR1020 series. Its 2 TB variant is pictured below. What makes the drive unique, is that it ships in the 2.5-inch form-factor, and supports 20 Gb/s PCI-Express (likely Gen 2.0 x4) interface. The product label doesn't mention how the drive plugs in. No variations of SATA-Express offer 20 Gb/s bandwidth at this time; while this clearly isn't an M.2 drive. The company is also expected to show off its MicroSSD, an SSD-on-a-chip solution, which is a multi-chip module (MCM) of an SSD controller and some NAND flash memory.
