Razer's Promise for 2024 & Beyond: Incorporation of Recycled Materials

Razer, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, has announced another major milestone in their commitment towards a sustainable future, with the inclusion of recycled materials in new PC products launching throughout 2024 and beyond. Focusing on its core PC peripherals, this new initiative covers three key categories: mice, keyboards, and headsets. Initially, only the models produced in Razer's signature black base colorway will feature recycled materials, with more product categories to be added over time.

Razer has been experimenting with the use of recycled materials in product manufacture, with two products already available. The Razer DeathAdder V2 X HyperSpeed gaming mouse contains 40% recycled materials, and the Razer Ornata V3 ergonomic clicky gaming keyboard has at least 20%. With these successful integrations of recycled materials, both products met the strict criteria to achieve the UL 2809 ECOLOGO label, an independently verified ecolabel certification from the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, UL Solutions. Razer is now pushing the program out to encompass an even wider range of products, for all its core PC peripheral launches from the start of 2024 and onwards.

NVIDIA Proposes that AI Will Accelerate Climate Research Innovation

AI and accelerated computing will help climate researchers achieve the miracles they need to achieve breakthroughs in climate research, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said during a keynote Monday at the Berlin Summit for the Earth Virtualization Engines initiative. "Richard Feynman once said that "what I can't create, I don't understand" and that's the reason why climate modeling is so important," Huang told 180 attendees at the Harnack House in Berlin, a storied gathering place for the region's scientific and research community. "And so the work that you do is vitally important to policymakers to researchers to the industry," he added.

To advance this work, the Berlin Summit brings together participants from around the globe to harness AI and high-performance computing for climate prediction. In his talk, Huang outlined three miracles that will have to happen for climate researchers to achieve their goals, and touched on NVIDIA's own efforts to collaborate with climate researchers and policymakers with its Earth-2 efforts. The first miracle required will be to simulate the climate fast enough, and with a high enough resolution - on the order of just a couple of square kilometers.

US Government Targeting Crypto Miners With Proposed Energy Bill Tax

The US Government is considering new plans that will attempt to curb the after effects of cryptocurrency mining. The White House revealed details about its proposed "DAME Tax" scheme on Tuesday of this week - the Digital Asset Mining Energy excise tax is under consideration for this year's US Budget. The government wants to address the impact that cryptomining has on the US economy as well as the environment, alongside numerous other national challenges. Companies engaged in the extraction of cryptocurrencies could be charged extra for the running of computer equipment (starting in early 2024). A White House spokesperson states: "after a phase-in period, firms would face a tax equal to 30 percent of the cost of the electricity they use in cryptomining."

American crypto companies are facing a 10 percent taxation of their energy bill for 2024, that will then increase to 20 percent in 2025, and the maximum tax rate will hit a high of 30 percent in 2026. The White House number crunching team reckons that $3.5 billion could be generated by the proposed DAME excise tax. The new rules would represent a radical change for large scale cryptomining efforts: "Currently, cryptomining firms do not have to pay for the full cost they impose on others, in the form of local environmental pollution, higher energy prices, and the impacts of increased greenhouse gas emissions on the climate. The DAME tax encourages firms to start taking better account of the harms they impose on society," reads a White House statement." The government's investigation has determined that the domestic cryptomining industry is close to consuming more electricity than the entire nation's residential lighting system. US lawmakers last year calculated that some of the larger digital asset mining firms are capable of using more energy than nearly all of the residential population based in Houston, TX.

Tablet and Chromebook Shipments Continued to Decline in Q3 Amidst Ongoing Market Headwinds, According to IDC Tracker

Worldwide tablet shipments were down 8.8% year over year in the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), totaling 38.6 million units, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. This was the fifth straight quarter of decline for the tablet market. Chromebook shipments also struggled in 3Q22, falling to 4.3 million units and a year-over-year decline of 34.4%. Both markets have now shifted from supply constrained industries to ones that are demand challenged as consumer and education spending has slowed in the face of economic uncertainties.

Chinese vendors continue to do well in emerging markets where there is low-end demand. Sanctions from many vendors also enabled Chinese vendors like Huawei to perform well in the Russian market. Meanwhile, the emergence of low-priced Chinese OEMs like Realme, Xiaomi, Oppo and others, has fueled strong competition in the lower range devices. However, these gains still couldn't offset the decline experienced by the main tablet vendors.
