MSI Readies BIOS Update for 14th Generation Intel Core Processors to Enable APO

According to the discovery made by @ghost_motley on X/Twitter, we have information that MSI is starting to roll out BIOS updates to accommodate Intel's Application Optimization called APO shortly. This update, however, comes with significant restrictions. Intel APO, designed to enhance performance, is exclusively compatible with 14th Gen Intel CPUs, leaving owners of previous-generation Intel processors, mainly the closely comparable 13th Gen, without this benefit. Intel's APO is an extension of its Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) specifically for gaming. It is available on select 14th Gen Core processors like the i9-14900K/KF, enhancing workload distribution across hardware resources like P-cores and optimizing them for peak frequencies.

As noted, the current rollout of Intel APO support is limited, namely to the Intel Core i7-14700K, i7-14700KF, i9-14900K, and i9-14900KF, excluding the Core i5 series. This omission is significant given APO's focus on boosting gaming performance, a feature that would be highly beneficial to Core i5 users. However, the feature is currently supported by only two games: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and Metro Exodus. The frame rate improvements in Rainbow can be as high as 13% while also boosting Metro Exodus FPS by 16%. Whether we will see more APO-optimized games or not, owners of MSI motherboards have received their updates and are ready to enjoy the FPS increase.

Gigabyte Adds the X670E AORUS Pro X to its AMD Motherboard Lineup, has Internal HDMI Port

Yesterday Gigabyte revealed a pair of AMD B650 motherboards in white/silver and today the company has added an entirely new X670E model using the same colour scheme. X670E AORUS Pro X doesn't have an equivalent black SKU and it's the first Pro model using the AMD X670 chipset, although the overall PCB appears to be based on the X670 AORUS Elite AX, with some interesting additions. The obvious changes include a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, courtesy of the X670E AORUS Pro X using the E version of the chipset and this also means dual PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 slots, as well as a pair of PCIe 4.0 ones.

For some reason, Gigabyte also changed the 2.5 Gbps Ethernet chip from Realtek to Intel, but the specific model isn't mentioned. WiFi will apparently be via a Qualcomm QCNCM865 module, or an MTK/AMD MT7927/RZ738 module, both options supporting 320 MHz wide WiFi 7 channels and Bluetooth 5.3. Gigabyte has also thrown in three extra fan headers, as well as headers for external temperature sensors. However, the one really peculiar feature that has been added to the X670E AORUS Pro X is an internal HDMI port. The internal port appears to be limited to 1080p30 and it's intended for use with a smaller display mounted in windowed cases for diagnostics data and we believe this was a feature ASRock was first with if memory serves. Gigabyte calls this feature Sensor panel Link, but it's unclear if Gigabyte will offer suitable displays or not. There's no word on pricing or an availability date.

Gigabyte Expands its Range of White Motherboards with Two AMD B650 Models

Just over a month ago, Gigabyte launched a pair of white motherboards for Intel CPUs and now the company has quietly released a pair of white models for AMD CPUs. The two models are the B650 AORUS Elite AX Ice and the B650M AORUS Elite AX Ice, the main difference being the form factor, as the latter is a microATX board. Besides the white PCB, all of the heatsinks are silver/white in colour, although all the connectors on the boards are black, just as with the Intel boards. The rear I/O shield has also been given the white treatment to better fit into a white case.

However, the Ice boards are not identical in terms of specs to their older siblings, as Gigabyte has done a few minor changes that aren't noticeable at first look. Gigabyte has shifted away from using MTK/AMD and Intel WiFi cards and is now using the Realtek RTL8852CE on these new boards. We should mention that Gigabyte are using the RTL8852CE on later revisions of the black versions as well. It's currently unknown when these new boards will be available and how much they'll retail for.

GC-HCPE Power Connector Can Supply more Than 600 Watts to GPU

Twitter/X user @momomo_us has unveiled official documentation detailing a new GC-HPCE power connection standard to supply additional GPU power throughout motherboard. This connector can deliver over 600 Watts of power, surpassing 12VHPWR connector's capacity. The GC-HPCE power connector features four groups of pins. Sixteen pins are dedicated to power delivery, while the remaining twelve facilitate communication between the motherboard and the graphics card. Its size is comparable to the regular PCIe x1 connector. Positioned in alignment with the primary PCIe x16 slot on a motherboard, the GC-HPCE power connector is situated behind the x16 slot, typically where the motherboard chipset heatsink is found. This strategic placement ensures the graphics card can be easily slotted into both connectors, simplifying installation. The connector's design negates the need for an additional locking mechanism, as the x16 slot's existing lock sufficiently secures the graphics card.

First showcased at Computex, this connector was featured in several prototype motherboards and graphics cards, emphasizing its potential to enhance cable management and aesthetics. By eliminating supplementary power cables from the graphics card and channeling power through the motherboard, the graphics card's appearance remains uncluttered, and cable management behind the motherboard tray becomes more streamlined. Intriguingly, this connector is a familiar design. It's a modified version of the High Power Card Edge (HPCE) standard prevalent in the server industry. While ASUS has been the primary proponent of this connector, it remains to be seen if other companies will adopt this standard for their consumer products. Additionally, routing power throughout the motherboard will require manufacturers to include additional power regulating circuitry, potentially driving motherboard costs up. It is also not an agreed upon industry standard, which could block some future GPU upgrades from happening.

You can check out ASUS'es implementation of the Back-to-Future (BTF) motherboard that supports this connector below.
