AOpen i945Ga-PHS Review

  • The i945Ga-PHS can be the heart of your new Media Center for around $160. While this may sound like a bit much first, you have to consider that you will not need to buy a VGA card because this board has everything integrated.
  • Integrated VGA with HDTV out
  • Fan control and underclocking in BIOS
  • Good performance
  • No active cooling
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Limited overclocking options
  • Not cheap
With the i945Ga-PHS AOpen has created a very solid multimedia motherboard. The available features are exactly what you would need. Several motherboards are already offering on-board VGA, but this one offers HDTV component output on top of that - unique.
AOpen has put many nice features in their BIOS which help reduce fan noise. For example each fan output can be set to a fixed percentage or the fan speed can be adjusted according to a temperature limit. All this works without the use of any additional software.
On the performance side the board is a bit faster in most benchmarks than the ABIT AL8 which uses the same i945 chipset. When it comes to overclocking your options are a bit limited, but in my opinion a Media PC shouldn't be optimized for raw performance (which needs a lot of cooling), it is better to have a quiet system.
