Value and Conclusion

  • G.SKILL's Phoenix Pro 240 GB is available online for $599.
  • Outstanding synthetic test performance
  • More IOPS than other Sandforce drives
  • Performance improvement over many other Sandforce SSDs
  • Large capacity
  • Supports TRIM
  • Includes 2.5 inch bracket
  • High price
  • Large, too much space for many
  • Real-life performance not as impressive as synthetic
  • IOPS improvement can not make a big difference
G.SKILL offers two versions of their Phoenix SSD lineup. One normal version and one "Pro" version. The difference is that the Pro SSDs come with up to 50,000 IOPS enabled in the controller while the non-Pro is artificially limited to 20,000. As a result, G.SKILL's Phoenix Pro 240 GB is the fastest SSD we tested so far. However, don't expect any miracles. The increased number of IOPS can only make a small difference in actual benchmarks. Compared to other Sandforce-based SSDs we see about 3-4% improvement averaged over all our real-life testing. For a 240 GB SSD I'd say a price increase of $10 or $20 would be justified for the extra IOPS, but not more. Right now G.SKILL's pricing is that the Pro version retails at $599, just like the normal version does, making the choice a no brainer.
Price-wise the G.SKILL Phoenix Pro 240 GB sits right where the other Sandforce drives in other capacities are. If you are looking for an SSD with lots of space then the 240 GB Phoenix Pro should definitely be on your list. If you already have an older SSD and are debating an upgrade to a Sandforce based model, don't expect any huge performance increases, the additional space is always nice though.
