System Options

You can modify all network settings from here. You can automatically let the NAS obtain an IP address via DHCP if it is connected to a LAN or manually set an IP address, which is the preferred approach. A wireless option will appear on the left side of the window if you connect a wireless dongle to the NAS, which allows you to connect to a wireless network. DSM 4.3 also supports the IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack scheme and PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) if your NAS is connected to a DSL or cable modem, and ISPs (Internet Service Provider) use the same protocol and the Tunnel technique, which encapsulates IPv6 packets within IPv4 ones, allowing IPv6 compatibility with even an IPv4 network backbone.

You can configure various settings of the DSM operating system through these options—change your login mask, customize the ports used by the HTTP service, enhance security of all browsing sessions, configure ports for file sharing with Internet services, and validate a server's and administrator's identity through a certificate.

All necessary regional options can be found here.

You can set DSM to notify you of any status changes or errors via e-mail, SMS, mobile devices, Windows Live Messenger, or Skype. These could, for example, include a connection loss, behavioral fan change(s), power failure, a storage volume running out of space, backup, and restoration failure.

The Control Panel's Hardware option allows you to adjust power recovery settings, set the fan speed mode, tamper with beep control, enable UPS support so long as your UPS allows for network control, create an operational schedule for the NAS, and adjust HDD-hibernation modes. You can even pick an advanced HDD-hibernation mode that promises to minimize the DS214play's power consumption.

You are able to control external devices, like USB and eSATA ones, through this option. You can also set the copy button's function here.

A notification will pop up once you connect a USB external storage device to the NAS. You can format this external device through the corresponding menu of the Control Panel. Formatting options include the following file systems: EXT4, EXT3, and FAT32. You cannot format an external disk into NTFS, but the NAS recognizes external disks using this file system.

You can connect to A2DP Bluetooth devices by connecting a Bluetooth adapter to the NAS.

You should be extra careful with this menu since it has the option to reset the NAS to its default settings, which will erase all data stored on it.

DSM can automatically check for a new update, and you can download and install it here if one is available. The whole update process of the OS is very straightforward and fast, and your data will remain intact; however, it is always advisable to create a backup before you update the OS.
