NVIDIA GeForce "Volta" Graphics Cards to Feature GDDR6 Memory According to SK Hynix Deal

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX graphics cards based on the "Volta" architecture, could feature GDDR6 memory, according to a supply deal SK Hynix struck with NVIDIA, resulting in the Korean memory manufacturer's stock price surging by 6 percent. It's not known if GDDR6 will be deployed on all SKUs, or if like GDDR5X, it will be exclusive to a handful high-end SKUs. The latest version of SK Hynix memory catalogue points to an 8 Gb (1 GB) GDDR6 memory chip supporting speeds of up to 14 Gbps at 1.35V, and up to 12 Gbps at 1.25V.

Considering NVIDIA already got GDDR5X to run at 11 Gbps, it could choose the faster option. Memory remains a cause for concern. If 8 Gb is the densest chip from SK Hynix, then the fabled "GV104" (GP104-successor), which could likely feature a 256-bit wide memory interface, will only feature up to 8 GB of memory, precluding the unlikely (and costly) option of piggy-backing chips to achieve 16 GB.

efikkan"GTX 1180" will most likely not be a significant upgrade over GTX 1080 Ti, so I see no reason to upgrade.
And as some have already mentioned, allocated and needed memory are not the same thing. I'm pretty confident that if Nvidia decide to launch "GTX 1180" with just 8 GB, it will still be a very balanced card.
Look at the past:
GTX 580 1.5 GB
GTX 680 2 GB
GTX 780 3 GB
GTX 980 4 GB
GTX 1080 8 GB
I think GTX 1080 is ahead of the memory requirements.
I would left those 384bit bus cards out of that comparison. So to better compare it gen-to-gen with same bus widths:
GTX 560 ti 1GB 256bit gf114 (8*1Gb)
GTX 680 2GB 256bit gk104 (8*2Gb)(/GTX 680 4GB )
GTX 770 2GB 256bit gk104 (8*2Gb)(/GTX 770 4GB)
GTX 980 4GB 256bit gm204 (8*4Gb)
GTX 1080 8GB 256bit gp104 (8*8Gb)

So nvidia have been doubling the memory amount to every new arch. If they are continuing doing that gtx 1180 would be 256bit bus with 16GB of memory(8*16Gb). Which would not be surprising me, while remembering from the past:
gtx580 1.5GB-> gtx680 2GB
gtx780 ti 3GB -> gtx980 4GB
gtx980ti 6GB -> gtx1080 8GB

But will they actually need to do that, is the other question.

Totally
bugIt's still "according to Hynix". But ok, you've spotted another worldwide conspiracy to make Nvidia look better than it should. PM me your address so I can send you some candy.
Only thing we know is that Nvidia made a deal with Hynix for GDDR6. Um, details like how much, and when, and what for weren't revealed these chips may be for Volta and they or can be for their next card a year from now. It was "according to Hynix deal" not "according to Hynix," Hynix probably doesn't even know what Nvidia plans. All is being said is being said is the title says one thing jumping to a conclusion and article says another that is actually we don't know but here is some more speculation. You can keep your candy, wouldn't want you running out of it as you offer it to kids from a creepy van.

But already Micron has GDDR5X modules with 16Gbps....

If I remembered correctly, GDDR5 chips could be paired as 16 bits ones (one chip can use the 32 bits interface, but you can put two of them "hanging" from the same interface as 2X16b). So I don't see why you can't doing the same technique with the newest GDDR6.
