Intel plans to enter graphics field with multi-core 32nm GPU

As you probably know, Intel is working on their own graphics card. Most people scoff at this idea, considering that Intel was rumored to buy NVIDIA so that they could have graphics cards. However, in a few years (late 2008/2009), Intel is planning on becoming a serious threat to the market dominance owned by NVIDIA and ATI. Intel is claiming that by late 2008 they will have at least sampled a card with multiple cores (up to sixteen) on one die. They also claim they will be able to do this on a 32nm architecture. This 16 core, 32nm GPU is estimated to run sixteen times faster than the 8800GTX.

wtf

Ok so im guessing no one here actually follows amd/ati if u did you would know ati has stream computing and is currently make streamcomputing technology compatible for 40plus cores and amd in there private comm areas amd/ati is already working on the first of their multi core stream computing graphics cards dont get ur hopes up though because this tech is in trial phase and it will undoubtly be expensive. On another note if u dont know about stream computing look it up

multi core gpus is nice but coupled with stream computing= KICKASS

ok first yall who are "this is gonna kick ass" or "16cores thats gonna rule" need to geta brain.

more cores dosnt alwase mean better, it just means more.

also intels NEVER been good with gfx EVER, their old 740i cards SUCKED compared to every other 3rd party 3d chip maker out there, not only did the cards suck, the drivers where just plane bad, anybody who had one of these knows what i mean.

intels fatial flaw with this idea is that their not good software developers, it will endup being another farce like "intel extream graphix" crap that intel was saying was going to be the best onboard gfx on the market and would be as good as a value addin card, its not, infact its worse then sis or even via onboard gfx!!!!

im sure amd will have an answer, and they plan over the next 2 years to start moving ati production to their own fabs, as well as farming some out when needed.

lower NM dosnt alwase mean cooler or faster, remmber prescot? smaller prosess, hot as hell, remmber the tbred-a ? almost as hot as palimino, what smaller prosess does is allow eather more chips per wafer OR more complex chips in the same space.

intel will alwase be ahead in the die shrinks, thats to be expected since they have more fabs and can convert fabs over in shifts without loosing production capacity to any notable degree.

as stated above i will belive it when i see it.

intel could make a 80 core chip but if the software behind it sucks or the design sucks its gonna be useless :)

Multicore GPU Crap

Nowadays GPUs are allready mutlicore. Like everyone knows, they got multiple pipelines that work simultaniously and each one can handle multiple shader operations. So if Intel really thinks that they will make a huge step by having 16Cores they should first consider the 128 stream-processors/cores on the 8800GTX.

intel got the money so they can make a big impact unless they make a bad mistake

Notice how they don't say 16x faster than the 8800 in what exactly?

In technology one company that doesn't really sit in a game does not jump out of the blue and completely destroy the competition. It doesn't happen, so I wouldn't worry about Nvidia and Ati going anywhere.

One of the worst cases of one company seriously 1-uping another company would be when Intel was stuck on the P2 and AMD released everything up to 1.3ghz on a flash, it wasn't very long at all until Intel jumped with the P3s 800-1000mhz...

Although it would be nice to see another company directly target the same market that buys ATI, and Nvidia, it would cause some havoc and bring prices down a bit like they need to. It would also probably force things like better drivers and support. Well at least we can hope so...

Apart from all that, 16 times faster than an 8800GTX, so perhaps near 16 times more exspensive? even if its just 4 times more money, they will only get about 5% of the market share at anything like those prices so I dont think that would worry the competition too much, its a bit like when the Jaguar XJ220 Race car went into the production lines for public sale in the 80's, because they were so exspensive (and fast) their production was limited, they did not dent the sales of the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.

tkpenaltyUm if that was the case the 8800 wouldnt run as hot as it is on such a powerful cooler.

Nvidia VS ATI is equivalent to the two sides in BF2142; everyone else merged or got eaten up.

ATI & Nvidia both have a reason why they don't have 45nm technology yet; they can't afford the fabrication plants.
Oh yeah that's right, the 8800GTX is on a 90nm process still, my mistake. Anyway, the point still being that Intel will always have the smallest fab process giving them a constant advantage.

the problem maybe, what IF intel do pop a fat cheery outta the bag? now would'nt that put a cat among the pidgeons.

this is just what we need tho'.another gfx card maker whoever it is,prices will come down which is a good thing.

if they do make one and it is really good,it wont take long for the sales to rise tho'.there are only really two gpu makers,so you pick one or the other.there are lots of dvd makers so a new company would'nt impact on them much.but with gpu's it is differant.as there are only two choices,a new company would be directly stealing sales from one or the other of them.and i'd say even losing 5% of your sales would make a differance to them.(sorry i'm waffling, probs a load of crap).

prices come down, thats not what intel wants they want to sell a card for 1.5k each, or 800each for a low end card :P

Hmmmm....its currently Feb 12 2007. A graphics card 16 times more powerful than the 8800 intended for last 2008 or sometime in 2009. Hmmmm. First of all ...kudos to intel for making the attempt. Alternately it is important to keep the technology in perspective. I 1 - 2.5 years I would think that even very average cards will be coming close to this.
Realistically cpu/gpu technology have doubled in power every2 years or so historically. You couple that with multiple gpu/cpu setups and 16x 8800 isnt really that impressive a concept.

That wont happen... If ATI and Nvidia get to out of hand, all the small guys around yet will make a huge come back and start eating market share. Look at it Microsoft starts playing games and linux has been getting pushed immensely for the last few years.. Same would happen to them, or any other big competing company in any industry.

linux is still a joke in the home user and especly the gamers markets.

and a buddy of mine had a good laugh/comment about the 16cores thing, 16-5950ultra cores :P the biggest peice of crap ever made hehe

and intel could charge whatever they liked for their top cards and even if drivers sucked intel fanbois would buy, hell look how many people stuck with intel dispita how bit a pile of shit he p4/nutburst design was!!!
i have seen people on forums like this one who said they stuck with intel because intel alwase makes the highest quility products and they didnt really think the p4 was any slower then amd's offerings, they would rammble about how they thought those benches showing an axp or a64 kicking a p4EE around where faked or made using amd optimized software and that the p4 must be better because its at 3.4gz not 2.2....rofl

and as we all know, axp/a64>p4 and x2>p-d and now those same intel fans are bragging about how intels core2 at 1.8gz is faster then amd's chips at 2+gz......funny how things change ROFL

my point is that fanboi's will buy whatever their company shoves at them, hell look at the sales of the p4/p-d or fx/g80 cards, for various reasions those are bad products, the g80 mainly because it was russhed out with poor software support.

good hardware with shit software behind it is as useless as bad hardware, or in the case of the fx line, shit hardware with shit software behind it is just useless :P

Well there always will be the group that wont move. We all know that, but for a majority things will change. You are correct linux os' is still a world away from being a mainstream os, but honestly I see it coming. Not anytime in the next year or two, but I say within 5 years or so they will probably be a few full on compatible linux os's that are simple and easy to use on the stock shelves. I mean it was just a few years ago now most people didn't even know what linux is and now BestBuy carries 1-2 different linux systems and stock them.

its not really fair to pick on intel fanboys, there are a fair few amd ones on here too(you know who you are).

i am not a fanboy tho' i will buy the best for my dosh at the time.

and yes, netburst was a stoopid foob, intel mistakenly thought clockspeed was king when in fact efficiancy is king.high efficiancy/low clockspeed beats high clockspeed/low efficiancy anyday.

i wont just buy any pos amd or intel push out,i bought my c2d coz at the time it was the best for my dosh.some idiots refuse to buy it coz it is intel and "they dont buy intel".well they are the idiots.IF the K10 is better than the intel at the time i will likely switch back.

guys, they havent said this is going to be a gaming card. who knows? this could end up being a workstation card. judging by the quantum leap from the netburst architecture to the core 2 architecture, if they can dissect a fireGL or quadro and give that a quantum leap, then they will be a force to be reckoned with. take a look at the newest fireGL's, said to be up to 6x faster than their x1k series counterparts, when essentally its the same damn card with more memory and better drivers, the x1k card will stomp the fireGL in most, if not all, gaming tests. saying something is faster than something else, but not specifying what it's faster at doing, is asinine. my car is faster than my computer. see? it makes no sense.

I'm the same way, the only reason I have a 915D is because I was broke, and needed to replace my old system really really bad! And for $96 i think I paid.... I couldn't compete with it with anything else, I mean it could have been a 3.2 whoopty dooo I needed a dual core, and that left me with single core AMD... x2's were still all around $170+

I have gone back and forth quite a bit in my days, I stayed with intel until the Pentium release, then went straight for the K5s, MMX came out I went intel, K6-2 released..

What ever fits budget and needs works for me. And I tell my single sided customers to get a life and stop being ignorant. I love being the boss!
