Jon Peddie Research: 20 Million Shift from PC Gaming to Console Gaming by 2022

Jon Peddie Research has released a new report on the state of gaming and its future, with the research firm estimating a total of 20 million PC gamers will make the shift to console gaming by 2022. It does make sense, as the no-frills architecture of consoles and highly specialized hardware and development - alongside the lower cost of entry) have been calling gamers from all ages and budgets. Add to this the fact that IQ considerations are becoming smaller and smaller between a high-end gaming PC and their console counterparts - at least when it comes to global, base IQ of settings - and it does make sense that makers make the shift.

Adding to this is the expectation of increased doubling-down on exclusives from games consoles, with the exception of Microsoft, which will be bringing all of its exclusives to the PC market as well. The increased attention to game streaming, with Google's Stadia and Microsoft's own xCloud will prompt change in the way gamers consume content - no dedicated hardware may mean no consoles, but it will also mean no need to purchase expensive, high-end PC gaming hardware to run the latest games with the latest graphics technologies - that will all be run in the cloud. Smart TVs, for instance, may be all the investment required for a premium, lag-free gaming experience with maximum details, should worldwide internet access improve as it has been. Of course, the ratio of high-end PC gamers making their way to consoles is lower than that of gamers with basic or entry-level PCs that are capable of gaming - those will make up the vast majority of the quoted 20 million shift.

Agreed, consoles are idiot proof so very easy to work with them, no fuss no bsod/gsod and all problems linked to PCs so in near future 10-20 years from now i predict death of classic PC like we know it today, "goodbye my friend we had a good raid&fun" <--my words when time comes(If a am alive!).

I've been listening to PC gaming obituaries since 1990. I'll believe it, when I see it. PC gaming still has 50 % of gaming market share. It might shrink considerably when broadband internet becomes fast enough that latency isn't a problem anymore but looking at lazy ISPs and their unwillingness to invest in optics and other IT nfrastructure, I'd say PC gaming prospects are still looking good for a decade or two.

We haven't had a panic about PC gaming dying in years. I guess we are due for another round of it.

I do think the high prices of Turing GPUs is a concern for a lot of PC gamers. Even midrange Turings are too expensive for a lot of people. That might have an effect on some people deciding to give up PC gaming and just buy a console.

As primarily a console gamer myself, i doubt this will happen. PCs do more than just play games.

Jon Peddie is great at hindsight market analysis.

Future telling, not so much.

I too have been hearing a lot of this over the ages. It wont die but as 64K said, to which I agree with - GPU prices are just abysmal. But I also learned that even with mid range gpu's you can get much better details out of a game than a console can produce, still at reasonable prices. I guess what PC always had over the others was the extent of moddability. Plus as Konceptz said as well, plenty more can be done on PC.

when consoles are made so you can put a bigger and better APU in it and more ram, then I will make the shift too.

If GPU prices keep rising I could see PC gaming pricing itself into the ground in most parts of the world. The market forces will show the way I guess.

PC gaming is going to die! "PC gaming keeps growing year after year" PC gaming is going to die!

They obviously have no idea why people play PC, and how they can't replicate that experience on consoles.

You would think only Nvidia exists and that AMD is just a distant memory.

GPU prices keep rising? Not from my perspective, unless you think only Nvidia exists.

Well, comparing newer GPUs. The Radeon VII is a bit faster than a RTX 2070 but priced at $700 is too expensive for a lot of people and some are reporting that AMD is selling the GPUs at cost already.

Agreed. The high end has gotten a tad higher on the Nvidia side of the fence, sure, but the mid-range has not deviated much. It's always been the sweet spot for gamers - way back in the day for instance I bought a Radeon 9600XT over the 9800Pro because it played everything perfectly fine at the time for very reasonable price by comparison. Same with the GeForce 6600GT I got after it vs the 6800 Ultra. This is still true today - when you look at a Radeon RX580, GeForce 1060, or 1660 today vs a Radeon VII or an RTX 2070/2080, you're getting incredible value for money.

Beyond the mid range you'll always see diminishing returns on investment, and this is not a new phenomena.

Agreed. Stadia, xCloud, Nvidia GameStream etc. cloud gaming streaming services are bigger threat to game consoles than they are for PCs. Making game for them is making game for PC.

I was going to say the same. It will have to promise something amazing for me to cross over to the dark side.

I wish all the researchers would get together and be on the same page. Just recently the death of consoles and the unlimited growth of pc gaming was predicted by “researchers.”

I like to see how they will make your favorite console game without a PC

This reasearch is the most biased to date, I would agree if it was the opposite cause most game franchise that were "only consoles" are not anymore, so why bother buy a console in the first place? Whoever made this research is being paid by console makers. sony, microsoft and nintendo, dig deeper and you will find it.

well...
i thought that i will never play with a consolle... but price of everything in the PC worl has skyrocketed.
i remember when i bought core2duo e6400 on day 1... 187€ with a almost top of the line ga-x38-ds5 (another 180€) and a flashy brand new OC MSI 8800GT 512MB (220€) with a pari of Team Dark ddr2 1066 for 80€.
well today none of the entire pc will be enough to buy only a VGA (gtx2060) and the ram.
i know that 8800GT slapped down prices a lot (8800gts 640MB cost a looooot and 4870 too) but now the games are so poorly optimized that you need 8GB ram and a GTX1660/rx580 to play F-HD not counting on the storage side (with game tat take 60GB of space and win 10 another 30GB... well 512GB ssd is not so big)

if I have to play in the next 3 year i will take a consolle for sure :-(

Cry me a river. The only significant extra cost is the vid card. 90% of everything else you'll already have...b/c you want the PC. Tell me, what are you gonna do with locked 30 fps and nothing else? Lol

Also, all of the PC hardware except vid card will outlast a console generation. Yeah, really bad value there. Tell it to some other idiot that's scared of K/B mouse.

Cya, don't come back.
