Ethernovia, an Automotive Ethernet Startup, Receives $64 Million Investment

Ethernovia, Inc., a Silicon Valley-based startup, today announced that it has completed its A-round financing of $64 million. The funding round consists of multiple investors, including Porsche Automobile Holding SE (Porsche SE), Qualcomm Ventures, VentureTech Alliance, AMD Ventures, Western Digital Capital, Fall Line Capital, Taiwania Capital, ENEA Capital and others.

As vehicle architectures evolve from domain-centric controllers, networking solutions must concurrently evolve to support higher data rates of advanced vehicle applications while meeting demand for improved reliability and security. Such advanced applications include Advanced Driver-Assisted Systems (ADAS), autonomous driving (AD) and a rich ecosystem of customer software delivered Over the Air (OTA).
Ethernovia is developing a seamless, holistic and streamlined hardware and software system that meets this demand through the integration of advanced networking features targeting the future of software-defined vehicles. According to a report from market research organization Future Market Insights, the 2023 global automotive connectivity market is valued at $33.42 billion and is expected to reach a high of $190.29 billion by 2033. The report attributes that growth to several factors, including tightening safety regulations, increased sales of luxury vehicles, the advent of 5G infrastructure, the rise of vehicle autonomy and the "increasing prevalence of integrated connectivity."

Ethernovia was founded in 2018 by Shirani and a team of experienced semiconductor innovators, including Roy Myers, senior vice president of engineering; Hossein Sederat, chief technology officer; and Darren Engelkemier, vice president of silicon engineering. Today, the company's executive team also includes Christopher Mash, vice president of business development, and Klaas Bult, vice president of data acquisition.

Always connected cars means DRMed cars with subscription services, tracking and spyware, nannying and annoyances, and extremely expensive parts.

This has nothing to do with that. There's dozens of computers inside a car in charge of different systems and with more and more data needing to be moved from cameras and sensors for Automated driving features the data links of the old days are simply not enough.

Anyway this is years away, the automotive industry is slow as fuck. They're still only now starting to be comfortable with basic ethernet :ohwell:

pfff.... $64M.... they'll probably spend that much or moar just figuring out who's gonna do what, when, where & how...

That's chump change when it comes to tech development start-up costs...surely with all those big names involved they could have scraped together way moar than that :D

EVERY SINGLE TIME these buzzwords have been used in the automotive space, it has been for fencing off consumers from their actual vehicles. Unles yo think "the cloud" refers to the cumulonimbus above you. BMW and mercedes have already embraces the "subscribe to enable basic features" thing, Ford has patented a system to allow these connected vehicles to repo themselves, GM is moving to forcing you to subscribe to use GPS navigation while removing android auto/apple carplay. I could go on.

If you honestly think this "connectivity" tech wont be used immediately to do what I stated above, I have a bridge in alaska to sell you.

One thing is the disgusting industry trends currently gaining traction (and used as filler in this press release), the other is the new technology this guys are developing.

I totally get your sentiments and fully agree, I just don't think it's what's at stake here. They don't need this new tech to make things as a service or the "software-defined vehicle" - they have been doing that for years with different features and parts of the cars, VW is one of the most famous for this but the entire german club is all in on it.

The press release has a lot of "nice" - read disgusting - buzzwords but unless I'm mistaken their main work boils down to this
Ethernovia offers technologically leading, integrated Ethernet chips with high bandwidth and advanced security solutions for the energy-efficient processing of large amounts of data
They don't need that to DRM the car, a regular celular network is enough to send the kill code (or stop sending the enable code)
