Steam Deck Gets Decent Price Cut During Steam Summer Sale

The Steam Deck handheld console has been once again discounted as a part of the Steam Summer Sale. The base 64 GB model is now priced at $359.10, a 10 percent discount from the usual $399 price. The 256 GB one is down by 15 percent to $449.65, and the top 512 GB model is discounted by 20 percent, down from $649 to $519.20.

This is a bigger discount compared to the one we have seen in March, especially for the 512 GB model. The promotion will run until the end of the Steam Summer Sale on July 13th. Steam has also published a list of the top 100 most-played games on Steam Deck this year, and some of them are also a part of the Summer Sale. These include Hogwarts Legacy, Vampire Survivors, Elden Ring, Resident Evil 4, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and many more.

Damn! I'd grab one if they were sold in Australia while on sale. Still a no show.

Cool. Kinda neat to see The Deck 'sustaining' as a platform all its own (The PC-Console?)

I have the better-part of my game library on my 1TB-upgraded Deck, but I've used it more as an HTPC and Laptop substitute.
If someone was willing to keep a BT KB/M handy, they're surprisingly competent at 'being a PC'.

Aaaand they're gone. At least in the UK they're all sold out already! I'm still enjoying mine, I recently had some fun ripping my Switch games & am currently playing Breath of the Wild on my Deck where the controls are so much more comfortable than the Switch!

Amazing how fast it disappears from stocks, even being a niche product :)

I read about 70% sRGB screen, not that good.

Yes the screen isn't great, but it's not terrible either. For the price point it's understandable. My only complaint using it is that it doesn't get bright enough for use outdoors in sunlight, but then I don't want to use it outdoors in sunlight very often so not a big deal for me.

Seems like a fair bit of the UK stock went on Ebay...

It's painful to read "the tech is old" while Valve hasn't even bothered releasing it in my region yet :(

I grabbed one, putting my money where my mouth is. I got a 64 GB model and I will upgrade it to 1 TB.

I can recommend the WD SN740, if you're in the UK it was on Scan yesterday for £83.99.

I want one, but I don't need one and at this point, I've already purchased enough unnecessary stuff to learn my lesson.

The base model is still the best one to get by a long, long way.

Despite the deeper discount, you can ABSOLUTELY get yourself a 256GB M.2 2230 SSD for less than the €89/$90 difference. Hell, you can definitely get 512GB and keep the change.

As for the 512GB version, that does come with the anti-glare etched glass screen but you can get a good-quality anti-glare film adhered to your base model for under ten bucks. For the $160/€166 difference you can buy a 2TB WD740 SSD and have enough change left over to buy a steam dock, or bluetooth key+mouse combo.

The screen is fine. It's no worse than most laptops and cheaper IPS tablets and the backlight bleed is barely noticeable - I'd say it's definitely one of the better examples of a small form-factor IPS panel.

Similar devices with better screens seem to have abysmal battery life so for the portable, untethered experience the Steam Deck excels at, I'm not sure "nicer" screens are actually better given their negative impact on battery runtimes.

The effective screen quality is zero when the battery is dead, so I'd rather have an adequate image quality for an extra hour, thanks.

I had this same argument with myself.

The fact that The Steam Deck was a crystalization of a device I'd been dreaming of since childhood, trumped my better senses.

Thankfully, that lil thing has been quite useful and well-enjoyed, even hardly ever gaming on it or even using the Custom SteamOS interface. It's almost always in 'desktop mode'.

Agreed on the base model still being the way to go with the current 2230 M.2 prices, & the other differences are a giant meh from me.

That said, where can you get a 2TB WD SN740 for $160/166€ & still have spare change?? Maybe it's just the UK prices as that's £170 here :(

eBay or AliExpress from about £105 used, 130 new. You will likely have to wait 3 weeks for shipping from China though.

The SN740 isn't a consumer drive so you wont find it at retail unless it's Amazon Marketplace which is where you go if you want to get scalped.

It's on scan.co.uk, but I can't find it anywhere else that isn't potentially dodgy yeah. I just don't trust eBay or AliExpress to actually ship me a real drive & not some crappy knockoff. I trust Scan though.

Ebay and AliExpress both have buyer protection. You can pay 50% more if you're impatient and want it shipped from a UK company with a local warehouse, but where do you think they get their stock from?

AliExpress is one middle-man closer to the source and these days it's almost more reputable than a UK company, simply because the seller doesn't get paid by AliExpress until the customer marks it as "delivered and as expected".

Well, 30% more, & you don't have to worry about getting a fake yeah. I highly doubt Scan get their stock from AliExpress if that's what you're suggesting? I don't think "reputable" is the right word, "safer" fits better, but you're covered by consumer protection if it's a UK seller so that's probably still safer, though maybe you'd get your money back quicker/not lose your money with the others. Maybe it's got better in recent years, I've seen the amount of fake crap my dad has got from AliExpress & just avoided it for a while now. SD cards are the classic one, programmed to say one size but are actually way smaller & you don't realise until you try & read stuff back & it's garbage!

Thanks for the recommendation, but I still don't trust WD after the whole SMR NAS HDD incident. They've proven they can't be trusted. It's pretty sad, they used to be my go-to storage brand.

Fair enough, I look at individual products & judge them on their own merits & so far this drive has been great in my Deck, SO much faster than the 64GB PoS that came with it!
