NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Could See Price Cuts to $549

NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB graphics card finds itself embattled against the recently launched AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, and board partners from NVIDIA's ecosystem plan to do something about it, reports Moore's Law is Dead. A GIGABYTE custom-design RTX 4070 Gaming OC graphics card saw a $549 listing on the web, deviating from the $599 MSRP for the SKU, which hints at what the new pricing for the RTX 4070 could generally look like. At $549, the RTX 4070 would still sell for a $50 premium over the RX 7800 XT, probably banking on better energy efficiency and features such as DLSS 3. NVIDIA partners could take turns to price their baseline custom-design RTX 4070 product below the MSRP on popular online retail platforms, and we don't predict an official price-cut that applies across all brands, forcing them all to lower their prices to $549. We could also see NVIDIA partners review pricing for the RTX 4060 Ti, which faces stiff competition from the RX 7700 XT.

If anything 4070 Ti should cost 549. 4070 should be 449

7800 can oc to almost 4070 Ti levels 66 versus 69 Fps in time spy. 7800 destroys 4060ti.4070 and 4070 ti is 5% faster. Unfortunately 7800 Xt is permanently out of stock.

7800XT, despite the worse efficiency, shows how hilariously overpriced all of the 4000 series is; 4090 excluded as the top end halo card pricing never makes sense when you have the performance lead.

I guess that's true. I frankly don't even acknowledge the $1000+ gpu market as something that exists.

From a business standpoint better to drop it 50 and see how it goes. Personally I think $499 would have been the smarter move and really what it should have been priced at to begin with though. Although AMD would have likely priced the 7800XT at $449 in that scenario so nothing really would change honestly it's better for AMD the way it is their gaming division even with Consoles isn't doing as well as Nvidia's even though Nvidia doesn't give two shites about them.

No, even at 499 dollars the 4070 is a bad deal. To even have a chance to compete with the RX 7800 XT, it needs to be around 450 dollars.

The ONLY thing the 4070 does better than the RX 7800 XT in is in power usage (it's gonna be used on stationary desktops, so who really cares anyways?) and ray tracing. And that's it.

Exactly. There's a balance between appealing to the those who are interested in the 7800xt and extracting the maximum value out of those who are exclusively shopping Nvidia. If you price cut down to $500, you're losing $100 on every purchase of a 4070 that would have been made at the $600 price. If the price cut doesn't increase sales to the point where they can make up the decreased margin, then you're just losing money. They seem to think that people will justify a $50 premium to purchase Nvidia instead of an AMD product, and based on market share (we've seen plenty of AMD cards priced competitively over the years that don't outsell their more expensive Nvidia competition) this doesn't seem like a crazy bet. It probably doesn't encourage the enthusiasts to buy them but we are a very small minority of the actual market so our opinions don't really make a difference to total sales.

Given Nvidia made nearly a billion more from their gaming division during the most recent quarter, I doubt they care all much. This mostly has to do with partner cards it seems who make peanuts on each card getting thrown a bone by Nvidia. Honestly it's better for AMD if Nvidia keeps it's pricing they need all the money they can get.

Matching it in price would only mean AMD would drop it further. As it stands neither AMD nor Nvidia wants to enter a price war. To some the better efficiency and Vendor locked Nvidia features are worth it to others not, at the same price Nvidia would be a no-brainer for most people, excluding AMD fans and Linux users.

Between the disruption of the cyrpto/covid/ai boom and shortage, and the inability for consumers to stop themselves from throwing money at developers for early access, PC gaming has been in the gutter for a few years already. If the middle-highend range parts from either vendor get more expensive, PC gaming will continue to be shafted with horrible value xx60 and x700 series cards from both vendors.

Nvidia's partners have been crying about too small profit margins for years, Evga has even dropped out of the game, and now, they suddenly let the 4070 go $50 cheaper out of the kindness of their hearts, with no interference from Nvidia whatsoever. Tsk-tsk-tsk. :rolleyes:

Anyway, a 12 GB card should not cost more than $500 MSRP. At that price, a 16 GB (7800XT) vs DLSS (4070) battle would be exciting. $550 is still too much, imo.

$50 is already 10% off, which is already a pretty big drop - there's no world where NVIDIA is gonna drop it by a massive 20%. They might chop another $50 later on if this decrease doesn't slow the uptake of 7700 XT/7800 XT, but now that the price difference between 7800 XT and 4070 is below the psychological $100, it'll probably be sufficient to stop the bleeding of the latter.

Maybe FSR 3.0 works. I mean, without FSR 3.0, the RTX 4070 still enjoys a nice advantage because of Frame Generation and even if someone doesn't care about RT performance or CUDA, or power consumption or whatever, FG, no matter how we see it, does give RTX 4070 a very nice performance advantage, at least on paper, over Radeon cards and even RTX 3000 cards. But IF FSR 3.0 works, then there is no FG advantage. RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 cards lose an advantage against Radeons and RTX 3000 cards, in fact probably the main advantage Nvidia was pushing for RTX 4000 series in games.
