NVIDIA Details DLSS 4 Design: A Complete AI-Driven Rendering Technology

NVIDIA has published a research paper on DLSS version 4, its AI rendering technology for real-time graphics performance. The system integrates advancements in frame generation, ray reconstruction, and latency reduction. The flagship Multi-Frame Generation feature generates three additional frames for every native frame. The DLSS 4 later on brings the best looking frames to the user quickly to make is seem like a real rendering. At the core of DLSS 4 is a shift from convolutional neural networks to transformer models. These new AI architectures excel at capturing spatial-temporal dependencies, improving ray-traced affect quality by 30-50% according to NVIDIA's benchmarks. The technology processes each AI-generated frame in just 1 ms on RTX 5090 GPUs—significantly faster than the 3.25 ms required by DLSS 3. For competitive gaming, the new Reflex Frame Warp feature reduces input latency by up to 75%, achieving 14 ms in THE FINALS and under 3 ms in VALORANT, according to NVIDIA's own benchmarks.

DLSS 4's implementation leverages Blackwell-specific architecture capabilities, including FP8 tensor cores and fused CUDA kernels. The optimized pipeline incorporates vertical layer fusion and memory optimizations that keep computational overhead manageable despite using transformer models, which are twice as large as previous CNN implementations. This efficiency enables real-time performance even with the substantially more complex AI processing. The unified AI pipeline reduces manual tuning requirements for ray-traced effects, allowing studios to implement advanced path tracing across diverse hardware configurations. The design also addresses gaming challenges like interpolating fast-moving UI elements and particle effects and reducing artifacts in high-motion scenes. NVIDIA's hardware flip metering and Blackwell-induced display engine integration ensure precise frame pacing of newly generated frames for smooth, high-refresh-rate gaming, with accurate imagery.

NVIDIA's Frame Generation Technology Could Come to GeForce RTX 30 Series

NVIDIA's deep learning super sampling (DLSS) has undergone many iterations to the current version 4 with the transformer model, delivering new technologies such as DLSS Multi Frame Generation, predicting multiple frames in advance to generate the upcoming frame, and increasing the frame output per second. However, not every NVIDIA GPU generation supports these more modern DLSS technologies. In an interview with Digital Foundry, Bryan Catanzaro, VP of Applied Deep Learning Research at NVIDIA, commented on trickling down some DLSS technologies to older GPU generations. For example, DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, and Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA) work on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20/30/40/50 series GPUs. However, the RTX 40 series carries an exclusive DLSS Frame Generation, and the newest RTX 50 series carries the DLSS Multi Frame Generation as an exclusive feature.

However, there is hope for older hardware. "I think this is primarily a question of optimization and also engineering and then the ultimate user experience. We're launching this Frame Generation, the best Multi Frame Generation technology, with the 50 Series, and we'll see what we're able to squeeze out of older hardware in the future." So, frame generation will most likely arrive on the older RTX 30 series, with even a slight possibility of the RTX 20 series getting the DLSS frame generation. Due to compute budget constraints, the multi-frame generation will most likely stay an RTX 50 series exclusive as it has more raw computing power to handle this technology.

Alleged GALAX GeForce RTX 5080 "Blackwell" Box-art Drops Big Clue About Neural Rendering

The box-art of upcoming GALAX GeForce RTX 5080 "Blackwell" graphics card has much to say about the graphics architecture, without dropping any explicit mentions. The front-face of the box features a hooded human face—nothing fancy, until you begin to pay attention to the details. Half the face is composed of triangles streaming toward the face, while the other half is composed in place by a blue stream of light, as if to denote that it's being drawn by a fundamentally different method than "triangles."

The triangles here represent classic raster 3D graphics, while the other spirit-like half denotes neural rendering. Here's where it gets interesting. Both kinds of rendering are being applied to the same frame, and so neural rendering is fundamentally different from DLSS 3 Frame Generation, a technology that draws alternate frames using optical flow, motion vectors, and AI. Neural rendering appears to be, at least from this GALAX box-art, a technology that runs in real-time, where some elements, portions, or details of a frame are rendered by a generative AI, and others by raster 3D graphics.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce Hotfix Driver Version 566.45 WHQL

NVIDIA has released a new hotfix driver version 566.45 WHQL, built upon the recent Game Ready Driver 566.36. This targeted update addresses specific issues affecting gaming performance and stability. The hotfix primarily focuses on resolving micro-stuttering issues reported by players in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, along with improving overall stability for Ubisoft titles running on the Snowdrop engine.

The previous driver release brought optimizations for S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, including DLSS 3 support. It also expanded GeForce Experience optimal settings for several titles including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Delta Force, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Red Dead Redemption. With this latest hotfix update, NVIDIA has managed to iron out stability issues. However, there are no words about the overlay feature that reportedly brought 15% performance reduction while using NVIDIA App. While we don't host hotfix drivers, you can grab it from NVIDIA here.
