NVIDIA Announces DLSS 3 and Reflex Updates for Several Upcoming AAA Games

NVIDIA provided a quick update in its Gamescom 2023 presentation on several upcoming AAA games. Before that, NVIDIA provided a brief overview on how the RTX ecosystem is shaping up. There are now over 450 games and apps accelerated by RTX today. On games that support RTX ray tracing and DLSS, NVIDIA measured that 79% of the gamers turn DLSS on, and 83% of them turn RT on. DLSS is a sought-after feature in the PC gaming space, as it unlocks higher levels of performance than what a given tier of gaming hardware is capable of.

On to the specific announcements, and NVIDIA revealed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will come with support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex. Payday 3 is another hotly anticipated title, and it gets both DLSS 3 and Reflex support, when it launches this September. Another major announcement is that Fortnite gets DLSS 3 Frame Generation support. This should prove particularly useful for those on mid-range RTX 40-series GPUs such as the RTX 4060, as it would allow them upgrade headroom for higher resolution monitors, or room for more eye-candy as Epic Games adds them with future updates.

Immortals of Aveum Gets Updated PC Requirements, Confirms DLSS 3 and FSR 2.2 Support at Launch

The day is almost here. The release of Immortals of Aveum is just around the corner, and we here at Ascendant Studios are so incredibly excited for players to get to experience what we've been building all this time. As we inch closer to August 22nd, we wanted to take a moment to talk a bit more about the technology that's powering our game, and what that means for PC players in particular.

Earlier this year, we talked about some of the amazing tools we've had at our disposal as one of the first studios to release a AAA game using Unreal Engine 5.1. There's Nanite, for example, which automatically adjusts the details the player sees based on distance, letting us build huge, detailed 3D objects that look every bit as good up close as they do from virtual miles away. The additional surface detail of our objects provide significantly more places for lighting to bounce off of.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Drops Below the $1000-mark

NVIDIA's high-end GeForce RTX 4080 has, for the very first time, dropped below the $1,000-mark in pricing. A Newegg retailer-level promotion sees the MSI RTX 4080 Ventus 3X OC graphics card listed at $1,099, with a coupon shaving off a further $100. This is a 16.5% discount over the $1,199 NVIDIA baseline MSRP for the RTX 4080. The MSI Ventus 3X OC was originally launched at a $60 premium over the MSRP.

The GeForce RTX 4080 is seeing a much needed downward trend in street pricing, with the graphics card market as a whole experiencing a slump. The RTX 4080 in particular could be experiencing pressure from the Radeon RX 7900 XTX for NVIDIA and retailers to consider price-cuts, with the lowest street-price for the AMD flagship recorded at $881. It's probably hoped that a $999 price could attract some buyers away from the RX 7900 XTX. The GeForce RTX 4080 is an enthusiast-class graphics card designed for maxed-out gaming at 4K Ultra HD, with ray tracing enabled, and loaded with features such as DLSS 3 and dual-stream encoders and decoders.

ICYMI, GeForce RTX 4060 Launched Last Week: A Summary of our Mammoth Coverage

Last week (June 29), NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4060 "Ada" graphics card targeting a majority of PC gamers who still play at 1080p Full HD resolution. Reception to the new card was somewhat lukewarm, only 6% of our polled readers are interested in buying one (poll results). We crunched thousands of benchmark runs in our new 2023H2 test suite and managed to review ten different models of the 4060, six of which are available at the NVIDIA MSRP of $299, and we followed up with four more reviews of premium custom-design cards priced above the MSRP. Our results confirm that GeForce RTX 4060 is designed for maxed out gaming at 1080p; gameplay with ray tracing is possible at 25-50 FPS at 1080p, which can be increased by dialing down graphics settings, or through use of DLSS and DLSS 3 Frame Generation, in supported games. On the other hand, there were concerns with the small performance gains and high pricing, which makes many other options a viable choice.

We've put together a video presentation which compares all the cards tested, and that also serves as a really quick executive summary of the RTX 4060, and whether you should get one.

NVIDIA Finds a Clever Way to Boost DLAA Adoption—To Turn it into a DLSS Preset

DLAA, or deep-learning anti-aliasing, is essentially DLSS without the image upscaling. The technology holds the rendering resolution at par with your display's, but uses AI to attempt to add detail to your game, particularly smoothing out edges and other forms in the raster graphics that could require anti-aliasing. The result is image quality that's visibly superior to even native-resolution, and other methods of anti-aliasing, such as TAA and MSAA. Since all this is happening at native resolution, there is zero performance gain, some performance loss, however not one that is comparable to MSAA. It's a wonderful technology, and any game that supports DLSS should naturally expose DLAA in its quality settings to end-users, however this isn't the case. DLAA is seeing sluggish adoption among game developers, and NVIDIA has taken it upon itself to fix this.

NVIDIA is working on updates to DLSS that essentially makes DLAA a quality preset. We know from an article from earlier this week that DLSS performance presets don't just linearly scale render resolution, but affect other algorithm features, such as Reflex. A unique "G" preset was found in an Unreal Engine 5.2 presentation by Epic. It turns out, that this preset is part of the updates NVIDIA is planning for not just DLSS 3, but also DLSS 2, which makes DLAA a quality preset for DLSS. When engaged, it renders the game at 100% display resolution, without upscaling, but applies much of the AI image reconstruction features of DLSS. With this, it is hoped that many more game developers will pick up on DLAA, and integrate it with practically any game that supports DLSS.

More Games Get NVIDIA DLSS Support

Each week, we're bringing you news of the latest DLSS and ray tracing integrations in games and apps. Last week at COMPUTEX 2023, we announced that Ash Echoes, Honor of Kings: World, and Legend of Ymir will all launch with DLSS 3, and Party Animals with DLSS 2. And we celebrated the Early Access DLSS 3-enhanced release of Diablo IV, and the launch of System Shock with DLSS 2.

This week, Diablo IV launches for everyone worldwide, Tower of Fantasy has updated to DLSS 3, and Sony announced the July 26th release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which will include DLSS 3, ray tracing, Reflex, and DLAA. Additionally, DLSS 2 is now available in Alone In The Dark Prologue, WILD HEARTS, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, enabling GeForce RTX gamers to get the best possible performance and image quality in even more games.

NVIDIA to Give Unreal Engine 5 an Exclusive "G" DLSS 3 Preset

NVIDIA DLSS 3 Frame Generation technology comes with a certain number of reference performance presets by NVIDIA, which game developers can integrate into their game engines. These presets essentially trade quality for performance across tiers, and are lettered, as detailed in the screenshot below. DLSS 3 doesn't just built on the image upscaling technologies of DLSS 2, but adds the all-important Frame Generation component, which generates entire alternate frames using AI, and without the involvement of the raster graphics machinery. NVIDIA Reflex is also involved, to reduce the graphics latency cost this imposes.

A side-effect of frame-generation is that it can't predict when the scene is dramatically changing, which results in ghosting. Some of the presets by NVIDIA are designed to counter ghosting. It's important to note here, that unlike DLSS 2 presets, which were essentially tiers based on the actual rendering resolution; DLSS 3 presets cover a multitude of factors besides the rendering resolution and target resolution for upscaling; and not all presets are made available to games that support DLSS 3. Modders have, however, figured out ways to enable certain unavailable presets. It turns out, that NVIDIA is developing a new DLSS 3 preset exclusively for Unreal Engine 5, called Preset-G. A presentation by the Unreal Engine team detailing DLSS 3-related features in UE 5.2, inadvertently revealed this preset as they were presenting a DLSS 3 plugin, and a drop-down menu revealed the various presets, ranging from A thru G. At this point we don't really know what the G-preset includes, or what it's optimized for, but we should learn about it soon, as NVIDIA updates the public documentation for DLSS 3.
