Diablo (1997) Added to Battle.net Store

Beneath the cathedral of Tristram, past the catacombs and deep caves, a Prime Evil grows in strength. Terror grips the townsfolk. They pray for someone to descend into the darkness, avenge their fallen friends, save Tristram, and destroy their demonic malefactor. Will you answer the call? Return to 1997's Diablo, the title that launched one of gaming's most enduring action-RPG franchises. Warriors, Rogues, and Sorcerers can now grab the game from the Battle.net Shop and stand against darkness once again in this genre classic.

Experience the legendary action-RPG that defined a genre
1997's Diablo set the stage for a new type of game that combined fast-paced action, deep character customization, intense multiplayer combat, and dark gothic fantasy in one bone-chilling package. Choose your destiny—storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue, each with unique skills and abilities. Unite to destroy Diablo—join forces with up to 3 other players, delve into the hellbound depths beneath Tristram, and face the Prime Evil together.
This Battle.net release includes:
16 levels of old-school dungeon delving: Slaughter your way from the Tristram cathedral all the way to Hell itself across 16 increasingly challenging levels. Each playthrough features a brand-new, randomly generated dungeon layout that offers a fresh challenge every time you descend into the dark below.
Three iconic character Classes: Whether you prefer to crush skulls as a Warrior, nail monsters from afar as a Rogue, or bend arcane powers to your will as a Sorcerer, Diablo has a Class that suits your style.
Multiplayer demon slaying: Nothing beats battling beasts and demons with friends. Join forces with up to three other players and drive the demons screaming back to Hell together.
So, so much loot: It wouldn't be a Diablo game without tons and tons of randomly rolled loot. Liberate powerful weapons and armor from your defeated enemies, and upgrade your character's arsenal.

Check out the full manual for Diablo here. Grab your sword, string your bow, and ready your spellbook; Tristram awaits. A "Quickstart Gameplay Overview" is available to read here.

This is just weird. This isn't for free. No. But worry not, you have THREE iconic classes to choose from, because Diablo has a play style to fit your needs.

I picked up a copy of Diablo on GoG some time ago. I'd rather give my money to them instead of blizzard/activision.

Best way to play Diablo now is definitely not the original exe, but with DevilutionX, it's free on github. Adds proper widescreen, higher resolutions, lots of bug fixes, multiplatforn support, and some optional QoL features like auto gold pickup.

Blizzard and Activision are separate now, both individually ran under Microsoft.

This is even better. Now you have an actual portable version.

One could also scour the net for the keywords Diablo and Portable.

Warriors, Rogues and Sorcerers? Why tf would they change the character classes?

Yeah, separate under a single corporation. That's a bit like a Siamese twin separated at the legs.

I haven't touched Battle.net since putting down D4 in disgust a couple of weeks into Season 1 - but I wonder if the Acquisition of Activision-Blizzard will terminate that cancerous app, or at least split all of the CoD/Activision stuff away from the Blizzard client.

With today's ultra hi-res monitors, if it isn't "Resurrected" like Diablo II was, I won't be interested.

I can run the original Diablo by mounting an ISO image, I'm not about to give them money a second time, even if it was an iconic game, for the "privilege of downloading it from Battle.net" (and yep, I played it on PC and Mac, as I had both at the time).

They're separate, if you ignore how a high-ranking Activision exec was just named President of Blizzard after a bunch of long-time employees (some there since the founding) were laid off or quit.

The GoG version comes with the Hellfire expansion, so that would seem the better deal here.

They should hire the same company to do a remaster, same it is for Diablo II - Resurrected.
Would be an instant buy.

No thank you microsoft/blizzard. Battle.net is a no-go. DRM free on GOG or go eat meadow muffins.

That link only shows up on the front page version of the article. The version in the forums does not show that link, which is why we couldn't see it.

It's actually 4 or 6 character classes, the Hellfire expansion is bundled.
However, the same bundle, at the same price, has been available on GOG for years...

Lets hope this official version on battlenet hasnt used the warcraft 3 dev team, they used web code for its title screen and removed features, animations etc. from the rerelease lol. I almost brought it but then found my old install and was grateful I kept it. :)

Thanks for sharing the github link.

Diablo 1 has a great setting and plot but it is an absolute terrible game to play, saying this as someone that played it in ~97. I think I last played around with D1 in 2015. The complaints for me are the same: Slow character walk speeds, easy to dupe items, mouse click for every swing. It should be remade similar to D2R.

Simply adding effective controller support like they did with the console versions would go a long way.

It hasn't aged well; I remember thinking how clunky and dull it was when they brought it back as an easter egg within Diablo 3.

I certainly thought it was a decent game when it launched, but expectations change over time, and nostalgia doesn't do the original Diablo any favours. Even Diablo II is pretty woeful if you play the original version without the LoD expansion because the LoD expansion added so many quality of life changes that you forget how horrible the original interface and mechanics could be.
