Arrowhead CEO Apologises for Helldivers 2 Server Issues

Hey Everyone,, thank you for your patience during the server maintenance. With it we deployed three "rapid-fixes" aimed at improving the situation with rewards often not being handed out properly, login-issues, and server capacity. To speak in technical terms, our services as well as our partner services have a rate limiter that denies connections beyond a volume per minute to prevent the entire system from failing. We managed to increase the rate limit from 10,000/min to 20,000/min and the total capacity of concurrent players was increased from 250,000 total to 360,000 total. This was however still not enough as the player count jumped to 360k after 5 1⁄2 minutes.

As such, the issue with login remains. If for any reason you get the "Failed to connect to server"issue it means that the maximum number of login requests for that particular minute is exceeded and/or that the servers are full and will require someone to log out before allowing new players in. As mentioned above, the increased capacity should require less retries to get in.
As for the reward issue, the fix was mitigated but not resolved. And without additional server maintenance this will still not work as intended. If you get the issue you can try rebooting the game to increase the chances of it being reset. This is due to the high traffic on the servers leading to rewards not being tracked correctly by our servers.

I know the progression issue is frustrating, especially for newer divers that want to unlock sweet gear. For now, please once again accept our sincere apologies for the issues you're facing and rest assured, we're doing our utmost to make it right. In order to do so, right now it is crucial that our team gets some sleep and we will be back at this again in a few hours.

Regards,
  • Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios

Despite the issues the game is still feature complete and fun on a gameplay standpoint. I don't think Sony gave Arrowhead the resources required to properly launch the game, likely believing it would be a less popular title.

My brother picked up two copies and gifted me one on Steam. We're going to give the game a try in a few days when our schedules line up - hopefully we don't run into any issues with server connectivity. If the game is as engaging as Alien: Firestorm Elite then it'll be a fun time for us.

Nice to see that they're being straight forward with the current status of things. Here's hoping they keep improving.

Been playing for a couple days now. The server issues seem to be worse on PS5. And still getting random crashing to desktop on PC but it not as bad as it was during launch. I do 2-4 hours sessions without an issue then randomly it will go. Once the next few patches are out and we get game ready drivers we should be good. Game is still mad fun!!

Very fun game but msot issues are just a "suffering from success" scenario with server overload etc, not everyone has an expensive AWS serverless scalable thing going on, especially not an AA game like Helldivers 2

I liked the game, it's fun, it's generous, it's a breath of fresh air and I hope issues will quickly be resolved !

You'd think there are some best practices going on by now with regards to launching online games.

Every single time. lol

For those AMD rx 7000 series gpu users for which the game is currently constantly crashing the gpu driver, do try the amdgpu pro last release if you are able. It's been working well for me.

TO FIX CRASHES CHANGE THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS:
Screen-space global illumination: off
Anti-aliasing: off

Tried that first. Still got crashes until I did the above, just around every hour instead of every 5 minutes.

Highly advise the amdgpu-pro drivers instead. Been playing most of the day issue free other than server pain.

That's perfectly fair. I do hope the patch helps those plagued by this, because right now this is the only game I am having any issues with.

I had 2 crashes last night in a long play thru session.

I see the game was updated in the middle of night. so will see if this helps in today's play session later.

Could this be a HAGS issue?

Interesting post and theory I came across:

Try turning off Hardware Accelerated Graphics Scheduling.

Are you sure? I thought it was in the newer win10 builds. Maybe it is but AMD hasn't turned it on. Hmmm... oh well. It was a fun theory.

Let me know if those drivers do the trick! I've been playing on my old 6900 XT just for Helldivers 2 lol.

If the servers let you play, anyways...

i've been testing these for the last hour.

I did still have one crash. Also ran into that server limit message it cleared up for me in about 2 mins.

Hmmm. Weird. I'm tempted to play with them but at this rate of card swapping my pcie port is gonna wear out... lol.

So I tested them. They seem fine and pretty playable as long as you don't turn on Global Illumination or AA. Why those affect it, I have no idea.

EDIT: Yeah those drivers didn't do much for me. My best luck with still with the AMD Pro drivers, but honestly it's just more reliable to play on my 6900 XT. :(

It'd be best if we could get features like AA working in the end, but good to know.

I should also mention today's play session was on a newer patch version so that also one difference from my testing last night.
