Lighter, Slimmer PSP Coming in September

During a press conference at E3, Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, unveiled an updated version of the Playstation Portable. While the form factor is virtually unchanged it will be 33% lighter and 19% slimmer. The new version will also come with a video-out port. There has been no release date or price announced yet. Sony has sold more than 25 million PSPs worldwide lagging behind Nintendo which has shipped over 40 million DSs.

yeah do they ever wonder why PSP sales are lagging??????? lack of DECENT games, lack of follow up of acceccories, for instance....asside from the usuall stuff like speakers & docking stations & that 4Gb Hdd which is ludicrously expensive....what else is there????

I remember back in the day when GAME GEAR use to rule the world....it had a tv tuner cartridge u could buy that would enable you to watch TV on your Game Gear......

what im trying to say is that Sony havent shown any sort of Progression with the PSP.

& now that a skinnier PSP has come out whats the point of buying it if all the games are sh!t?????

haha i have never owned a portable game system but the PSP has always been attractive to me with sleek design and nice controls. this new video out port will be nice as well to play your movies on your tv or something. but yea no good games and lack of support has sort of scared me away. however in september when this is supposed to come out i may buy it just for the video out!

I dont care if they stop making PSPs completely but so long as they come out with SOMETHING that resembles Final Fantasy before the decide to bin production & execute their executives.....

that alone will keep me happy for a long time

also that rehash wildcard FF game doesnt count.... i want decent RPG's

having a slimmer, lighter PSP with a Video Out port doesnt justify:

- my frustration
- my psps loneliness
- the cost of the PSP (unless it was going dirt cheap then this is void)

bit of a scam to be honest....

their just trying to make some more cash out of the PSP before their ready to admit it was a total failiure & shut shop

its a make or break situation IMHO....& its going to fail if they dont full in all the support from game makers such as capcom & Square Enix etc to help them spearhead this stratagy forward....

PSP on its own will run out steam real quick.....

hopefully this re-release will turn some heads

That's pretty much the reason why the psp is behind...it doesn't have a decent game library, and promised accessories such as gps and camera hasnt been released in the US nor sounds like its ever comming.

I am not a fan of slimming some thing, just gonna make a smaller screen. I love my psp for its nice screen.

Video out is a nice feature, but its a portable gaming device, does people really need to plug it to a tv? They should have intergrated blue tooth or a second analog stick.

If Sony took them steps that would make them look & sound liek what happend to the Neo Geo handheld sytem..... Pre PSP days. gameboy colour wasnt even out yet I dont think. Im not too sure....

the Neo Geo had the games & Support. but the only problem was its was a Buggy as a Gordon Ramseys carrot cake...

they just couldnt get rid of the bugs. & because of that sales dropped....

they relaunched is as a palmtop. that will still buggy. then they relaunched it again as a SATNav system & that never took off....after that the company who made Neo Geo went bankrupt & as far as I kno havent been seen since...

Simple answer to that its to buy the movie. rip it to your HDD then torrent a Vdeo Converter Program that will convert it into PSP screen size. this process with roughly take u around 2hrs (1hr or 45mins to rip the Dvd 1hr to convert the Video down)

Or if u dont want to do that either then Torrent for PSP Videos... you can find loadsa videos but becareful of the ones that come in a Zip file... some assholes try to make u pay for the damn videos so they lock the Zip file down

Slim it? Are they NUTS. The PSP's size is perfect, sure it could be lighter, but damn....

I bought the PSP because of everything it could do at the time I got it (when we had firmware 1.5), but Sony then decided to stop me doing what I paid for because it's "as good as piracy"....how is running homebrew piracy? (I'm not talking about loaders to run "backed up" games, I'm talking about applications written by programmers specifically for the PSP)

*sigh* if only there were enough games to make up for it. The only two games I've bought myself are both the GTA games.

Again, its not a bad number of units sold, considering the starting price. It just doesnt have alot of original games going for it and lets face it, UMD movies arent really a huge selling point. The one thing the GB, GBC, GBA and Nintendo DS has going for it, is games. When Sony realizes this and starts to produce solid gaming only titles for it, they will sell more.

As far as games, see Tekken-Dark Resurrection. It has to be my favorite hand-held game ever.
And as far as why to get one, homebrew. The ability to emulate a 32-bit system, run .iso, run ps1 games, and emulate everything from MAME to Dreamcast.
And it plays doom.

PSP owns for watching movies on and way better/cheaper at it than ipod. ipod has its place though, in the gym,car or jsut as its portable music player with video option :P it works but psp screens own for watching movies on.

PSP imo is the best handheld system out there. Homebrew on the PSP is awesome. Also games like Monster Hunter and Valkyrie Profile simply kick ass. Much better than anything DS has to offer. Oh and the fact that PSP works with Slingbox...The only down fall is that its too advanced for people. Sony always has a tendency to release things that are too difficult for most people to use, keeping in mind not everybody is as smart as most of us who are around technology all day. The PSP is far superior to any other hand held out there, its just that it falls into the wrong hands...

I love my PSP, however it was a freebie so that may colour my view of it. To be honest, I mostly use it for Video and some music, not really for gaming. A bit of GTA I guess.

A 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo is only about £25 these day. Combine that with some ripped DVDs and Torrents, PSP Video 9 to make 'em MP4s, PSP Shuffle for Music and a pair of Headbanger headphones and its a great bit of kit. A DVB TV tuner would be a great idea too.

The fact they are making it lighter and slimmer is good as it is a bit porky, but its not like Im going to buy another one so ...............

I got way too lazy to read all of this, but I've used a PSP before, aka playing a game and watching a movie, and it was a nice experience. If this slim-down gives a better battery life, that'd be great! And to people who are bashin' it saying Sony should shoot themselves... last time I checked 25 MILLION sold doesn't account for a "failure".

Want a PSP? Ebay my friends.
I hate PSP, which is the exact reason that I sold the one that I found.
$120 Australian which cant be more than $65US and it was in perfect condition.

Still, you can probably buy a small dvd player with an LCD screen for a bit more.

I doubt alot that bringing out a slimmer, lighter PSP out means that battry life will be extended. I maybe wrong but I highly doubt it even so. they might have found a way to cut more of the body off the PSP or Micro size the manufacture of the curcit bords but I doubt it will extend battry life. & if your moaning about battry life then maybe you need to default clock your PSPs CPU or your battry itself has had better days. get a new one
FatForesterlast time I checked 25 MILLION sold doesn't account for a "failure".
if u look at it that way sure it hasnt been a "failure" but If u look at sales of other handhelds such as the DS you will see the difference in sales puts PSP as a "total Failure"

Maybe it was Sonys marketing stratagy to let the Nintendo DS to rule the handheld market.
maybe theyve got a plan ready to unleash & win back support & the global market....

From where I stand it doesnt look like it. theyve pretty much ignored the PSP from day one then the PS3 came out & Sony did say they were focusing ALL of their manpower on the PS3 so yet again the PSP becomes even more neglected......

like i said in an earlier post....

PSP has little & mostly CRAP games
PSP has little to look forward to feature wise unless its pointless stuff such as a video out port so u can plug your psp into a tv & watch videos or play your games through....

I bet Sony has even outlawd the word 'PSP' in their work place as a sign of utter shame.

The psp has a good selection of both good and bad games just the same as any games machine

DS games remind me of early spectrum/c64 ect games. Bit of an anticlimax when ya get ya ds game home and find the colorful box didnt quite reseble the game that looks like it was ported from a java mobile. fine for 5-10 year olds that dont know anybetter, but sat next to a psp with its games which resemble the type you play when ya get home to ya big console is no bad thing. I cant wait for god of war on psp myself.

I dont expect the new psp to be downgradable (like latest current psp versions) but sony are hardly gonna embrace free iso loading are they. I realise its a stratagy that works for nintendo which make no attept at blocking flash carts. as for umd movies, I havent baught many but its not due to price since there sell for 3 for 10, or on newer ones 2 for 20 at gamestation which isnt to badly priced.

I'll second that, and you've got more in agreement on other forums. Say goodbye to homebrew for now. . .

I don't really care about it and don't have one but here's a link to some more pictures of it and a video www.t3.co.uk/news/247/games/psp/psp-2-thin-and-lite. BTW the difference doesn't look impressive.

i own a psp and have to admit most my games are crap...the selection is terrible..medal of honour is the worst because the online play is just rubbish with the controls......the new update sux fine gta:ls runs alot smoother but my battery now lasts half the time it did!
i mainly use my psp for films and music because the only games worth playing are the gta ones....apart from that its a great device and sony are robbing poeple bling with this slimmer version...sony u suk and until u make some gd games i wont buy any.
