Intel's Next-Generation Nehalem PC Chips to Carry the Intel Core Name

Intel Corporation announced today that desktop processors based on the company's upcoming new microarchitecture (codenamed "Nehalem") will be formally branded "Intel Core processor." The first products in this new family of processors, including an "Extreme Edition" version, will carry an "i7" identifier and will be formally branded as "Intel Core i7 processor." This is the first of several new identifiers to come as different products launch over the next year.

Products based on the new microarchitecture will deliver high performance and energy efficiency. This "best of both worlds" approach is expected to extend Intel's processor leadership in future mobile, desktop and server market segments.

"The Core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward," said Sean Maloney, Intel Corporation executive vice president and general manager, Sales and Marketing Group. "Expect Intel to focus even more marketing resources around that name and the Core i7 products starting now."

The Intel Core processor brand name has gained broad awareness, preference, and market momentum over the past several years. The Intel Core name remains the logical choice for Intel's latest family of processors. The Intel Core i7 processor brand logo will be available for high-performance desktop PCs with a separate black logo for Intel's highest-end "Extreme Edition." Intel will include processor model numbers to differentiate each chip.

Initial products based on this microarchitecture are expected to be in production in the fourth quarter of this year. These processors will feature Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, also known as simultaneous multi-threading, and are capable of handling eight software "threads" on four processor cores.

once these parts come out lets compare them to existing parts to see if they are any better, and im not talking about Synthetic Benchmarks either.

they're showing to be roughly 20% faster per clock (thats very rough, as i've not read all the articles) due to the onboard memory controller and triple channel ram support. It remains to be seen how well the retail samples clock, but if they manage 4GHz or so they'll pwn core 2.

I for one think that Intel Core Seven would have sounded 10 times better. But hey it's their right to use that small i as they were the first to ever do it. I for one don't care that much as it should be pretty obvious to anyone that Intel Core i7 is a newer processor than the Intel Core 2. Also I think this move is a result of the talks between Intel and Microsoft. Probably at the gaming alliance conventions, cause I doubt they talked about what they should have. There is a big possibility that the next version of Windows will be called Windows 7, then this naming scheme would make sense...

Are there any game benchmarks for i7 yet or are they just using like Cinebench and stuff

There is probably no benchies yet even though Maximum PC has the first machine with this CPU, probably because Maximum got the CPU and mobo under a couple of conditions from Intel, such as no sneak peeks or sample previews unless they say so. Even if Maximum puts up benchies, like PCMark or Crysis, those benchies will most likely result in low frame rates since there's no six core CPUs on the shelves yet. I hear a bit of rumors in other forums that companies like Crytek and Valve are getting their newest engines ready for power users who think quad-core is not enough, games like F.E.A.R. and Quake 3 however don't need to be prepped since the engines that are powered from them are not complex enough to be CPU optimized, so the Larrabee CPU should do well in those benchmarks. BTW if these CPUs dominate the competition, I would probably nickname them "Devil Core" CPUs or something lol.

From what I have dug up LGA-775 started in the first few months of 2004. so its already over 4 years old which is quite old in computer terms.

I don't care if it's called the Core DogShit I'd still get it so long as the benchmarks warranted it.

Core DogShit sounds way cooler than i7, lol

Their slogan could be:

"As fast as shit off a shovel!"

I agree that Core 3 would be better than Core i7. Core 3 would be less confusing to customers but sometimes I think confusion is Intel's goal. People would clearly know that Core 3 is better than Core 2 but Core i7? And I'm talking normal people, not TPU enthusiasts.

Hah, I've never met a PR that wasn't an idiot. They're just another tool in the long line of corporate related bozos with grandeur visions for marketing based off nonsensical demographics.

Not that it matters much, but Nehalem is NOT "Core" architecture. It sounds to me like their plan is to use it to rope in business, as the "Core 2" was so popular.

I think that nehalem is actually called "Intel Core". thats it. and i7 denotes the series, like you get Q9 E6, E8, etc.

So to a certain extent we actually have core 1  , lol!

ya but 775 rocks and ill keep it for years to come because the core arch is just so good i know i can stay in the game best sockets to ever exist imo

Socket 775
Socket A

Socket A being most epic of all. imho these 2 sockets changed computing forever.

Socket A, yeah I'm still running it on some of mine.

Dang, 775 better stay around for a while. Aren't Nehalem server archetecture anyway?

Guess I'm sticking with the Core 2 I have now. On the AMD side, the AM2+ socket is capable of such speeds that AMD has to keep it for a while. If LGA775 is gonna get old, then Best Buy should have a "eat shit" Blowout sale for their PCs.

If 1366 is only for high end PCs, then 775 will probably live longer. But that's a theory I'd rather not trust.
