NVIDIA New Naming Scheme Revealed

After releasing yet another unofficial driver today, NVIDIA kind of revealed the new naming scheme for its video cards. Three lines from the latest NVIDIA driver release 178.15 suggest the new naming scheme:
NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0615.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTS 150"
NVIDIA_G94.DEV_0626.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 130"
NVIDIA_G96.DEV_0646.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 120"
All GeForce 9800 series powered by the G92 GPU will be renamed to GeForce GTS 15x, while the GeForce 9600 and 9500 (G94 and G96) cards will be known as GeForce GT 130 and GT 120. The new naming system is expected to become formal in two weeks time.

I wish they would bin the GeForce bit and and just go with something a bit easier. All this GTS, GT, and GTX, 9800=8800 makes my head hurt.

Still, at least they are trying...

They are trying but where are they getting these ideas from? Is this not made to simplify things for the public? Is the public recommending this?

this is a sad day, nvidia what happened to you :shadedshu

i am not happy about this honestly i thought the gtx+batman edition was a joke

should just be geforce then the higher the number the higher the card for example the 120 could be entry level then the 160 and 180 high mid and 190 ultra style
revisions shouldnt be a totally new series just be like 165 or 185

gs gt gtx gts ultra arrrrgh

Well, I like the fact that they're putting the qualifier before the version number -- it'll let someone know right away what kind of product they're looking at, and you won't have so many people thinking that a "9600 GT" is better than a "8800 GTX." :laugh:

Anyone else wondering if this might lessen demand for the "older" cards and drive down price? I know it's not likely but I'm keep my fingers crossed.

this only shows that 8800GT was a superior product , and ahead of its time !

Good point! Most likely all cards with old naming schemes are going to be cheap. I don't really see the problem with this as Nvidia obviously ran out of numbers with their 9xxx naming. What, you want them to call thier cards GeForce 10,000 series? Too many numbers. Starting at the bottom with thier new naming makes more sense to me.

nvidia is a joke, so this is how nvidia plans to beat ATi in making people think these are new cards and don't expect the Newbies to suspect anything.

If it helps ppl in the long run Im all for it.

and the above poster is right, the 8800GT was way ahead of its time, but only because the 8800GTX and Utra were about 2 years ahead of their time vs ATIs cards.
The 8800GT's still are great cards for 90% of ppl now days, and the new name sceam will push old cards price down even more.

I think they are changing the names of these to force the price of older cards down in price. I think it will be great if the 8800gt suddenly becomes $60. I would by one at that price and I don't even need it. :laugh:

That's a bit extreme. Ati may well have the upper hand right now, but Nvidia isn't a joke yet. They do have GTX280 competing with HD4870X2 (atm they are a bit behind here), GTX 260/260 216SP with HD4870, 9800GTX/+ with HD4850 and other g8X-9X deriatives with HD42-6XX. I'm not a big Nvidia fan (check my previous posts), but I don't like flameboyant bashing either.

I don't like Nvidia naming schemes either, but what can one do? Noobies will always fall for new names; it's an unchangeable fact.

You can slap a Lamborghini sticker on a Ford Taurus and I'll know it's still a Ford Taurus. All it takes is a little research before making a purchase on any product and those who fail to do so get what they deserve just like those who put fact in marketing also get what they deserve.

Admittedly the whole renaming scheme of Nvidia and it's influx of gtx+ products is getting a bit old, BUT, I think Nvidia is not only not a joke but are right in the game, ATI was a joke for a while in the true sense of the word, they FINALLY get a couple good cards, and all of a sudden you see everyone jumping on board...and these still are far from perfect cards. The amount of juice it takes for even a single 4870 to sit there and idle and do absolutely nothing (nevermind the amount the x2 takes) is absolutely shameful, even the reviews all of which say mostly positive things about the 4x series point out how bad they are at that, particularly compared to the gtx260/280 which are extremely efficient at idle...who cares? Well, I guess if you have an unlimited budget and just like paying craploads for electic bills for nothing, or NEVER leave your computer on and NEVER use it for anything other than gaming I guess you're ok...And if Nvidia ever gets its ass in gear and hurries up and releases 55nm or less versions of the gtx series and shorly thereafter whatever new architecture their working on, they could be number 1 in less time than one might think...

All this aside, thank GOD literally that ATI is finally producing good cards again, this caused the gtx+ to show up along with all the nvidia price cuts, so I think it's great! Truthfully I wouldn't buy any of the new products as is, I'm waiting to see the next wave from both red and green to see how to upgrade from my 8800gts sli setup, considering I don't think it'll be more than a month or two before major releases will happen...not just this silly renaming crap.
