Nintendo Sets New Game Console Shipment Record

Nintendo has had a happy hunting season in the month of November, with record-breaking sales of the Wii game console in the US. According to data compiled by NPD and sourced from TG Daily, Nintendo shattered its own record it set in November 2007, of 981,000 units sold, with a phenomenal 2 million units sold in November '08.

Given the state the economy is in, game console shipment estimates for November 2008 by NPD, come as a big surprise. Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony shipped 3,254,000 static consoles last month, which compares to only 2,217,000 units in November and translates to a 47% increase in shipped units year over year and 139% sequentially. Sales of console by Sony saw a sharp drop at the expense of Nintendo and Microsoft. The month saw equally good sales of game titles (covered here), again with those for the Xbox 360 and Wii holding the top spots.

Because they're selling a last-gen console for half the price and calling it next-gen. Somehow, it's so incredible that they're getting away with this, that it has to be reiterated constantly.

Because the nintendo appeals to older people and not just kids.

The seasonality in those sales figures is truly amazing.

Thankfully, for PC manufacturers and retailers the PC industry isnt subject to the same degree of seasonality.

Well acutely the 360 GPU Xenos is very smiler to the R600 in architecture and the PS3 uses a Cell Processor so I don't really see how this couldn't be next gen when the Xbox didn't even have HDR and the PS2 had some crappy chip. PC all the way for me anyways, screw consoles. I go to my friends house for that.

Well its not very similar its pretty much half way between an r500 and r600. The ps3 uses a G70 like gpu which is a seven series geforce and they both use Dx9c so I'd say they were last gen since dx11 is coming out. I think all this next gen hype is rediculous anyway.

Well I guess its last gen now, if you account for the use of CUDA and Stream processing and stuff like that. But when they were called next gen, they had some stuff in'em to make that claim true. Console are just always behind PC's, I really find them pointless. Why not sell their Hardware in a PC case already.

The ps3 is almost a pc, It can browse the internet etc, it just needs some games. I wish they came with bigger HDD's though and had pretty much every codec and could be updated that way so they would be true media centre console pc things.

You do realise how much cheaper consoles are in contrast to PCs? A $500 console will be able to play a whole lot more games that are more graphically intensive than a $500 PC (tower only). A console only has one PCB, and that has all the stuff on it, so therefore it effectively reduces manufacturing costs.

If you want to play games only a console is better for you, if you want to do anything else for the same price, of a console then a PC, but you'd sacrifice gaming to some extent with the PC at the same price as the console.

In a nutshell you're comparing apples with oranges.

The ps3 uses a 7900gtx,and the xbox360 uses a custom ati gpu with unified shaders.

Truly though, the Wii doesn't even compete with the PS3 or the 360 as it is in a completely different market, instead of targeting gamers, they target the average person, most of whom rarely play games or have never.

I think you are slightly confused.

The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are Current generation consoles.

The Wii is not.

the game consoles 'out power' a PC at the same price range, because the consoles sell at a loss. they make the money back from the games/

It is the current generation of nintendo's counsel, their sales figures speak to that, thus it is current gen. They have simply taken another marketing approach, focusing on gameplay improvements over pretty things, and as you can see, it has payed off in spades. They can get away with it b/c gameplay always wins over graphics, and nintendo continues to deliver original gameplay in a way for some reason no one else cares to match. Remember the 64? Using "outdated cartridges" to deliver LOZ, Mario 64, Goldeneye, ect, some of the most influential games of the time, bleeding edge tech isn't what makes gaming good, it just helps make good games even better. ;)

Kudos Nintendo
