Battlefield 3 Confirmed, Beta in the Making?

The CEO of Electronic Arts (EA), John Pleasants confirmed that the company will publish Battlefield 3, the newest addition to the Battlefield franchise, which is one of the most popular online team-based tactical-shooter games. Pleasants spoke with TechFragments, during a presentation at the William Blair Growth Stock Conference in Chicago. "I've had the luxury of looking at Battlefield 3 over at DICE in Sweden and was highly impressed by the way the team is working on that product. Of course, that's not in [this] fiscal year, but that is a product that is looking very good.", he said.

The source also shed some light on the game, which inherits its gameplay from Battlefield 2, and will be similar to it. The game will support up to 40 players per team, will feature 24 different vehicles, and 17 different weapons. Some kinds equipment need to be unlocked in order to use them, which serve as achievements in online play. From what EA says, the game will not make it this year, though it is likely that it will hit stores in the winter holiday season of 2010. A beta could serve as prelude to the launch, which may arrive by summer of 2010, according to the source.

pretty sure I remember in the servers list in both demo and retail 3 or 4 servers with */150 players or maybe it was a 100. I can't remember.

oh I was right it was 100.
It looks like this one may feature the largest online mode with up to 100 players on certain maps. Fans of the series will also see a new "Hud" system and other enhancements in the game.

Gamers will have to unlock certain weapons for the first time in Battlefield 2. It was not an issue of making the game more balanced it was just an option they decided to go with. The maps size this will determine how many players will be allowed to play. Some maps will only allow 32 players while others will allow 100 players.

All of these enhancements will certainly make the game more appealing for those who enjoy playing online with a lot of people. Even with a hundred players the game will play smooth.
you guys never seen these servers before?

I've only ever seen the 64 person. It may be in the beta update they're testing right now. Or in the SF maps?

Here's what pissed me off about BF2: EA.

Not only did they completely ignore bug reports and exploits for the longest time, they actually released expansion packs before fixing these things!

Add in the fact that by purchasing expansion packs, you were gaining an advantage (since it came with better weapons) and you've got a complete stew of bullshit.

EA and Dice can literally eat my shit with a knife and fork.

Whats really going to be the difference between this and BF BC 2? Sounds good, but I just feel they are pretty much the samething as I can't see why they wouldn't carry destructible environments over.

Those maps made it to the final release, but not the scale. Apparently the game could not handle 100 players sever side. In the end, it was scaled back to 64 man max.

They have release a recent (like last few weeks) new patch that may have extended that. I played BF2 and the BF2 demos and never saw a 100 man map.

when Battlefield 1942 was released it was nothing anybody had ever seen or played before. Battlefield 2 added a lot of new content like squads, commander, unlockables, a much needed improvement to ground forces and a graphics overhaul.

this is some of the features from a leaked source that grabbed my attention.
* Will ship with 8 maps, each supporting up to 40-players per team
* Squads and Commanders are present, introduced are “Battalions” which consist of three to four squads.
* Five playable classes; Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Support
* Will feature 48 different vehicles (24 for each faction)
* Will feature 34 different weapons (17 for each faction) and another 22 unlocks (for both factions), in total 56 different weapons.
* Other unlocks include different types of ammunition, body armor, helmets, camouflage and accessories.
* Built-in auto software updater (no more patches!, ed.)
so it looks like they reduced the classes from 7 to 5 however they sound pretty configurable. and hopefully the maps will be designed bigger to accommodate the new max players value instead of just changing it. I think Battlefield 3 will be big but I don't think it's going to have that same ground breaking effect the other two had.

All I can say is, "I will believe it when I see it". At this point in time they don't have anything to show. Which means that any of this information can and may change come demo/release time. Does this BF2 trailer ring a bell? Hmm??? This was the trailer for the PC well before Battlefield 2: Modern Combat on the console. Which was years before Bad Company. People still complain of all the missing content.

Scale

If you are just looking for number of people, then check out MAG.

I kinda hope this gets ported to PC. While I may not see all the stuff going on in the field, it would be cool to see it in the distance.

yeah but we are talking about the core gameplay features not silly weapons or vehicles that were added to the booster packs.

They have been planning on 128 player servers since BF2. This is the earliest talk of it that I can find right now. They even had maps which we never saw the light of day. However, that information is over 4 years old (pre-demo release) and hard to find right now.

BumbleBeeI hear what you are saying but it's a trailer. Team Fortress 2 Trailer is different than the final product 1) the muzzle flashes are cartoony and 2) there is no arch way at mid point
We are not talking about TF2 but BF series here. Which is why I said that I will believe it when I see it. There is no telling what BF3 (if it ever seeing the light of day) will be like.
