Streacom Announces ZeroFlex 240W Fanless Power Supply

Streacom is pleased to announce the ZF240 (ZeroFlex), a 240W, no fan, no noise, internal PSU that is based on the Flex form factor. The challenge has always been to supply high power, not only in a small package but also without any active cooling. To do this we have used extremely high quality components and developed an innovative power circuit that is more that 93% efficient. 240W may not seem a lot, but to put things into perspective, if this PSU had active cooling, it could easily run at 450W, and its still less than half the size of a standard ATX PSU.

Even with the high levels of efficiency, heat is inevitable, which is why we have the unique 'L' bracket which connects the PSU directly to the case heatsink, and is designed to dissipate the heat outside the chassis. The AC socket is also mounted on a cable instead of being fixed to the body of the PSU, allowing for flexible positioning and more innovative future case designs.

Gigabyte Outs G1.Gaming Branded H81 Chipset Motherboard

Gigabyte took the concept of H81M-WW a notch higher, and gave it the G1.Gaming branding. So what, if you can't run PCI-Express gen 3.0 graphics cards at their native gen 3.0 bus speeds, the H81 Express chipset must still amount for something? Gigabyte thinks so, and launched a G1.Gaming branded entry-level micro-ATX motherboard based on the chipset, which Intel reserves for "essential computing."

The new H81M-Gaming 3 is mostly identical to the H81M-WW, and the only visual differences we can spot are the second PCI-Express 2.0 x1 slot on the former, instead of the latter's legacy PCI; and the fancier PCH heatsink. The board still gives you onboard audio with audio-grade electrolytic capacitors and ground-layer isolation, even if its centerpiece, the ALC892 CODEC, doesn't have a three-figure SNR. One notable difference here is Gigabyte opting for an Intel-made gigabit Ethernet controller, instead of the cheaper Realtek-made one on the H81M-WW. Gigabyte didn't announce pricing or availability, but something tells us this package could sell well with entry-level gaming PC builders.

Intel Core i7 "Broadwell-E" HEDT Chips Arrive in 2016

Intel is beginning to put out the first details of its next high-end desktop (HEDT) processors, internally. Codenamed "Broadwell-E," the company's next Core i7 HEDT chips will be built in the existing LGA2011v3 package, and will be compatible with existing motherboards based on Intel's X99 Express chipset (with BIOS updates). Much like "Ivy Bridge-E" was to "Sandy Bridge-E," these chips will introduce only incremental updates, and nothing major, in terms of architecture.

To begin with, Core i7 "Broadwell-E" will be built in the 14 nanometer silicon fab process, and will feature 6 to 8 cores based on the "Broadwell" micro-architecture. These cores will be cushioned with up to 20 MB of L3 cache. The chip is pin-compatible to "Haswell-E," and so its I/O will be identical, featuring a quad-channel DDR4 integrated memory controller. One difference is that Intel may can the 28-lane PCIe approach with the entry-level part; or at least it doesn't find mention on the slide. If it's true, all parts based on this silicon, will feature 40-lane PCIe interfaces. The TDP of these chips will be rated at 140W. Intel is expected to launch the Core i7 "Broadwell-E" in 2016.

Gigabyte Launches GeForce GTX 970 Mini-ITX Graphics Card

A time-traveler from two years ago would see the graphics card below to be a $100-ish mainstream fare, but looks can be extremely deceptive. This puppy packs more bite than a Radeon R9 290X. Gigabyte's latest creation puts a GeForce GTX 970 into a compact board that should play well with mini-ITX builds. The GTX 970 ITX card (model: N970IX-OC) features a full-height PCB that's about as long as a mini-ITX motherboard (17 cm), and a dense WindForce cooling solution that uses a single 100 mm fan to ventilate a dense aluminium fin heatsink, to which heat is fed by two 8 mm thick, and one 5 mm thick copper heat-pipes.

The card draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. Display outputs include one HDMI 2.0, two dual-link DVI, and three DisplayPort 1.2 connectors. It comes with factory-overclocked speeds of 1076 MHz core and 1216 MHz GPU Boost, compared to reference clocks of 1051/1178 MHz. The memory is left untouched at 7.00 GHz. The best part about this card is its price. Gigabyte is charging no premium, pricing it at US $329.99.

Chromebook Shipments Up by 67% QoQ as Acer Dominates 37% of Market in 2Q-'14

In another strong quarter, Chromebook shipments increased by 67% QoQ and are projected to double in size YoY. Acer continues to maintain its lead over other vendors in the market, including Samsung, HP, and Dell. The top three leading vendors - Acer, Samsung, and HP - accounted for 74% shipment share during 1H 2014 and are forecasted to maintain market control through 2H 2014, according to quarterly data from technology market intelligence firm ABI Research.

"Consumers are hungry for a product that is cost effective but also provides the versatility and functionality of a laptop," says Research Analyst Stephanie Van Vactor. "The growth of the Chromebook market demonstrates a niche that is gaining traction among consumers."

The questionable need of Chromebooks by consumers contributed to the slow start of these devices; however, vertical markets such as elementary education still remain a driving force. In emerging markets, especially in Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe, business-purchasing entities account for 75% of Chromebook sales. ABI Research also forecasts that North America will account for 78% of the Chromebook market in 2014, while other regions, especially Asia-Pacific and Western Europe, are expected to grow in market share by 2019.

The NC2 also maintains all of the great features of the NC1, modular design, easy assembly, ultra efficient cooling, acrylic sides for internal Wifi & Bluetooth, and of course the high grade aluminium sandblast finish that is across our entire range of cases.

Cooltek Intros GT-03 ATX Mid-tower Case

Cooltek rolled out the GT-03, an ATX mid-tower case that looks heavily inspired by some of the recent works of SilverStone, such as the Raven RV-05. Where it falters is the use of SECC steel and matte ABS plastic, instead of aluminium. Measuring 510 mm x 200 mm x 460 mm (DxWxH), the case dry-weighs 5.2 kg. Its front panel features a 'shield'-shaped cover over its three 5.25-inch drive bays, of which two are usable, with the third being an exposed 3.5-inch bay with a clip-lock protrusion of the door. Other front-panel features include a SATA drive dock, two each of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0/1.1 ports, and standard HD audio jacks.

Internally, the GT-03 has room for CPU coolers as tall as 152 mm, and graphics cards as long as 300 mm. Internal storage areas include three 2.5-inch, and four 3.5-inch drive bays. The motherboard tray has cutouts at all the right places. Installation, for the most part, appears tool-free. Ventilation includes two 120 mm front intakes, a 120 mm rear exhaust, and two 120 mm top exhausts. The case is now selling for 44.99€.

NVIDIA Could Review GTX TITAN-Z Pricing for the Retail Channel

Under pressure from its own recently launched GeForce GTX 980 cannibalizing its $3,000 flagship GeForce GTX TITAN-Z (you can buy GTX 980 Quad-SLI at $2,200), NVIDIA could finally review its pricing, in the retail channel. The company recently reduced its price for the OEM channel, letting pre-built gaming PC manufacturers source the card at a lower price, whether those price-savings were transferred to the end-users, is a different question. To what measure NVIDIA could lower prices of the GTX TITAN-Z, is not known at this point. Retailers like OCUK were seen offering their GTX TITAN-Z cards at a slightly reduced price, last week. Across the big pond, American retailer Newegg sold-out an ASUS-branded GTX TITAN-Z for as low as US $1,500.

In the wake of GTX 980, AMD cut prices of its dual-GPU flagship product, the Radeon R9 295X2, down to $999. It's hard to imagine that competition from this card, and the GTX 980, are the only factors driving down prices of the GTX TITAN-Z in such a big way. Could NVIDIA be working on its next dual-GPU flagship graphics card already? Perhaps one based on a pair of GM204 chips, with thermal and power requirements as low as those of the GTX 690? Watch this space for more.

8K A Great Challenge: NVIDIA and AMD

Even as 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) is beginning to enter the consumer mainstream, with 28-inch displays being priced around $600, and Apple toying with 5K (5120 x 2880), with its next-generation iMac Retina desktops, Japanese display maker Sharp threw a spanner in the works, by unveiling a working prototype of its 8K (7680 x 4320 pixels) display, at the CETAC trade-show, held in Japan.

Two of the industry's biggest graphics processor makers, NVIDIA and AMD, reacted similarly to the development, calling 8K "a great challenge." Currently, neither company has a GPU that can handle the resolution. 8K is four times as many pixels as 4K. Driving an Ultra HD display over DVI needs two TMDS links, and DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 have just enough bandwidth to drive Ultra HD at 60 Hz. To drive 8K, both NVIDIA and AMD believe you would need more than one current-generation GPU, the display should connect to both cards over independent connectors, and somehow treat the single display as four Ultra HD displays. We imagine Sharp demoed its display at a very low refresh rate, to compensate for the bandwidth limitation. After 10 years of Full-HD tyranny, display resolutions are finally beginning to see their normal rate of development. It's time now for GPU developers and display interconnects to keep up.

Philips 272G5DYEB 27-Inch G-SYNC Monitor Arriving This Month

MMD, the leading technology company and brand license partner for Philips Monitors, announces a superb new monitor for true gaming fans: the 27-inch Philips 272G5DYEB display with NVIDIA G-SYNC. With a refresh rate of 144 Hz, this display updates the screen content nearly two and a half times more often than a standard monitor. By letting the GPU control the refresh, it delivers ultra-smooth image motion that includes the critical images that are otherwise missing on displays with standard refresh rates. So players can target objects more accurately - and level up their game.

NVIDIA G-SYNC - groundbreaking display technology
One drawback of gaming with a standard monitor, at least for serious gamers, is the lower refresh rate, which can make objects appear to jump suddenly from one spot to another on the display. The NVIDIA G-SYNC chipset is designed for gamers who are looking for a display that can game just as hard and fast as they can. The Philips 272G5DYEB NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor, with its advanced graphics support, is more than a match for the sharp, fast responses of experienced gamers. It redraws the screen image up to 144 times per second, making objects less likely to jump around and easier to target accurately.

ASRock X99 OC Formula and Z97 OC Formula Breaks a Bunch of New Records

Among other reasons like support for DDR4 memory modules and being invulnerable to water, the ability to break new records constantly is why ASRock's OC Series motherboards are awesome for overclocking. A couple of weeks ago, Nick Shih overclocked an Intel Core i7 5960X (Haswell-E) on ASRock X99 OC Formula to 6620.73 MHz, and now the skilled overclocker John Lam has set another new record by running Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) on the same winning combination to achieve a mind exploding 2950 marks! Moreover, overclocker 8 Pack also broke two more new records on an ASRock's Z97 OC Formula and GeForce GTX 980 - 3DMark06 57742 marks and 3DMark05 75123 marks!

Colorful Launches GeForce GTX 980 iGame Graphics Card

Colorful launched its flagship GeForce GTX 980 based graphics card, the GTX 980 iGame. It should come as no surprise to anyone following the over-the-top engineering from this company, that the GTX 980 iGame comes with one of the meatiest cooling solutions, and one of the most muscular VRM solutions, a GTX 980 ever shipped with. The GTX 980 iGame ships with a non-reference design PCB by Colorful, which features pure silver traces, a gargantuan 14-phase VRM that draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power inputs, server-grade tantalum capacitors, high-grade DPAK MOSFETs, and high-current solid-chokes (which don't 'whine' under load).

Colorful GTX 980 iGame ships with dual-BIOS, the first one runs the card at 1127 MHz core, 1216 MHz GPU Boost, and 7.00 GHz memory. The second BIOS drives clocks up to 1178 MHz core, 1279 MHz GPU Boost, and 7.01 GHz memory. The two BIOSes can be toggled with a push-type switch. As always the factory-overclock isn't intended to make the most of the VRM and cooling, because that's what Colorful expects enthusiasts to have fun with. Moving on to the cooling solution, and you get a massive triple-slot compound aluminium fin-stack heatsink, which features three 100 mm fans. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.2, one HDMI 2.0, and one dual-link DVI. A solid metal back-plate with a dotted-mesh pattern dons the back. Colorful began shipping the card to select markets in APAC and EMEA regions. The company plans to launch an even more over-the-top card based on this PCB, called the GTX 980 iGame Kudan, later this month; and the GTX 970 iGame, which is essentially this card with a GTX 970 chip.

Lepa Readies MaxPlatinum Line of High-Wattage PSUs

Lepa is readying a new line of high-wattage PSUs, for high-end gaming desktop and workstation builds, which feature multiple graphics cards, and maybe even multi-socket processors. Named MaxPlatinum, these PSUs will come in three variants, the P1050M, the P1375, and the P1700M, featuring 1050W, 1375W, and 1700W capacities, respectively. While the P1050M and P1375M offer their advertised continuous power output in both 115VAC and 230VAC areas, the P1700M is a different beast. It will only be sold in markets with 230VAC, and it won't support 115VAC.

The P1050M and P1375M come with enough cabling for systems with three to four high-end graphics cards. Their cabling includes a 24-pin ATX, two 8-pin EPS, six 6+2 pin PCIe, twelve SATA, eight Molex, and one Berg. The P1700M, on the other hand, is loaded for bear, with 24-pin ATX, two 8-pin EPS, ten 6+2 pin PCIe, twelve SATA, eight Molex, and one Berg. The P1050M features a four +12V rail design, while the P1375M and P1700M features a six-rail one. The three are originally manufactured by Enermax. Lepa didn't announce availability.

DeepCool Intros Pangu SW-RD Mid-Tower Case

DeepCool rolled out the Pangu SW-RD ATX mid-tower case. Built in red and black, in a design that isn't particularly new, the Pangu SW-RD introduces multi-color LED lighting, in the form of two RGB strips, a power adapter that plugs into a 4-pin Molex connector, and a control pod that lets you pick color. The case features matte-black interiors. Storage areas include three 5.25-inch drive bays, from which one is concealed (we wonder why); and six 3.5-inch/2.5-inch bays spread across two detachable cages of three bays, each.

The case seats standard ATX, micro-ATX, and mini-ITX motherboards; and features 7 expansion slots. Cooling system includes a 120 mm rear exhaust (fan included), and provisions for two 120 mm front intakes, one 120 mm bottom intake, and two 120 mm top exhausts. Front panel connectivity includes two each of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0/1.1 ports; and HD audio front-panel jacks. Measuring 498 mm x 205 mm x 477 mm (LxWxH), the case dry-weighs 7.5 kg. It has room for CPU coolers as tall as 165 mm, and graphics cards as long as 310 mm with the 3.5-inch/2.5-inch drive cage in place, and up to 400 mm, with it removed. DeepCool didn't announce pricing or availability details.

PNY launches the OTG Panda and the Micro M2

PNY, the leading manufacturer of memory products and PC Peripherals, is delighted to announce the combination of the OTG Panda and the Micro M2 USB drive, a perfect package for mobile solution. USB OTG is an abbreviation of USB On-The-Go. This basically means that you can plug any PC peripheral to such a port on the device, which acts as a USB host similar to a PC with a USB port, allowing USB flash drives to be connected directly for data transfer. Using USB OTG, one will finally be able to get to do something more productive on the Android Smartphone by connecting a USB keyboard/mouse combo or a mouse connected via OTG.

With most Android phones being fast enough to support interesting games, one can really take control of gaming by attaching a USB joystick and enjoy a competitive edge over your competitors. One of the peripheral devices one can connect to an Android Smartphone or tablet via OTG is a USB storage drive. This allows one to transfer data directly to the USB drive without having to make use of a computer. Also, this is very convenient because one can do it on the move, just about anywhere.

PC Shipments Down By 1.7% in Q3, According to IDC

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 78.5 million units in the third quarter of 2014 (3Q14), a year-on-year decline of -1.7% and a sizable improvement over the forecast of -4.1%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker.

Many of the trends from the second quarter remained relevant and contributed to the 3Q14 results. Commercial PC purchases played a key role in many markets, with the top three vendors - Lenovo, HP, and Dell - all showing solid year-on-year growth. Conversely, fierce competition and a spiral toward tablet-like prices helped to further consolidate the market. Shipments of entry systems, including Chromebooks, continued to inject an important source of volume and sustained improved consumer demand in certain markets over recent quarters.

Aqua Computer Also Announces Airplex Radical 2 Series Radiators

The airplex radical is Aqua Computers newest addition to its radiator line. The new radiator series which is manufactured in Germany is based on the airplex modularity system but this time reduced to the essentials to combine a great performance and workmanship with an attractive price. Like its big brother the airplex radical series is produced without any soldered joints which means the radiator comes without any residues of tin. Only Delrin, stainless steel and copper make contact to the cooling fluid - also when using variants with aluminum fins.

To allow a perfect installation Aqua Computer introduces a new protected mounting system which is based on threaded sleeves made of nickel plated brass. The threaded sleeves are pluggable and extend into the mounting holes of the fans so that they almost slip into the correct position by themselves. Anyone who has mounted a radiator before knows the struggle to align the radiator with the fans and screws. This system also extends the threads which reduces the risk of damaging the radiator with too long screws.

Aqua Computer Intros Kryographics GTX 980 Full Cover Water Block

The German-based liquid cooling specialist Aqua Computer has added the full cover water block kryographics for GTX 980 cards to its portfolio. The block is CNC-milled from a 10mm thick high-purity electrolytic copper block while the GPU is covered by a micro structure with a 0.5mm grid. The kryographics for GTX 980 covers the GPU, RAM and other than some of the competitors also all relevant parts of the voltage control.

The contact surface of the base is high gloss polished. To gain the last bit of cooling performance the kryographics for GTX 980 also allows using thermal grease instead of thermal pads for the RAM chips. For an easy installation the block comes with preassembled distance pieces so the screws can be tightened as far as they will go to achieve an optimal contact pressure. The block can be used with regular G1/4" fittings and the connection terminal offers threads into both directions. In a SLI setup the regular connection terminal can be also exchanged with an optional kryoconnect adapter which connects two or more blocks directly.

Apple Readying iMac Retina with 5K Display

Apple's next iMac desktop could flaunt the company's "Retina Display" moniker, which stands for pixel density that matches that of your retina. Apple's idea of Retina display on a 20-something inch desktop is 5K, which is 5120 x 2880 pixels, or four times the resolution of WQHD (2560 x 1440), or sixteen times HD (1280 x 720). Early betas of Apple's OSX "Yosemite" feature references to display resolutions upwards of 5K, including 5760 x 3240, and 6400 x 3600.

At 27-inch, 5120 x 2880 would give the Mac a staggering 217 ppi of pixel density, which is not very far from the 263 ppi which 9.7-inch iPads offer, with their 2048 x 1536 resolutions. To put 217 ppi into perspective, a 28-inch Ultra HD display offers 157 ppi, and Apple's current 27-inch iMac with WQHD display offers just 108 ppi. A mainstream 24-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) display offers just 91 ppi. The GPUs that drive these next-gen iMacs are anyone's guess. Both current-generation AMD, and NVIDIA's new GTX 980 cap out at digital resolutions of 4096 x 2160.

Palit Announces GeForce GTX 980 Super-JetStream

Palit rolled out its GeForce GTX 980 Super-JetStream graphics card, its fastest GTX 980 card, which is a notch above the GTX 980 JetStream, the company kicked off its GTX 980 family with. The card ships with factory-overclocked speeds of 1203 MHz core, 1304 MHz GPU Boost, and 7.20 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory; compared to the 1127/1216/7000 MHz clocks the GTX 980 JetStream ships with. The card otherwise features the same PCB and cooler design. Expect a small premium on this one. Based on the 28 nm GM204 silicon, the GTX 980 features 2,048 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide memory interface, holding 4 GB of memory.

MSI Announces GeForce GTX 970 Gaming LE

MSI announced a variant of its GeForce GTX 970 Gaming OC graphics card, which goes easy on the factory-overclock, dubbed LE (lite edition). The card is identical in design to the GTX 970 Gaming OC, which launched last month, but features clock speeds of 1076 MHz core, 1216 MHz GPU Boost in OC mode, and 1064 MHz core with 1203 MHz GPU Boost, in "Gaming" mode; and NVIDIA-reference speeds of 1051 MHz core and 1178 MHz GPU Boost, in silent mode. The card is still based on a custom-design PCB that features a strong VRM, which draws power from a combination of 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors; and the company's new TwinFrozr V cooling solution. MSI didn't announce pricing.

BenQ Outs the XL2430T Gaming PC Monitor

BenQ rolled out the XL2430T gaming PC monitor. Its selling point is a feature-called GROM (gaming refresh-rate optimization management), which adjusts refresh-rates between steps of 75 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, and 144 Hz, depending on the content's frame-rate, to minimize stuttering or page-tearing. The monitor features BenQ's signature black+red color-scheme, with controls along the stand, so you don't have to reach out to tacky buttons along the panel. Display inputs include dual-link DVI, DisplayPort (both of which are required for GROM and >75 Hz refresh rates), two HDMI and one D-Sub (refresh-rate is capped at 75 Hz). Other features include headphone and microphone jacks. BenQ didn't announce pricing.

AMD Demos First Network Function Virtualization on 64-Bit AMD and ARM Technology

AMD today demonstrated the first network function virtualization (NFV) solution on AMD's 64-bit ARM-based SoC and announced that it is now sampling to AMD's embedded customers. The NFV demonstration is powered by a 64-bit ARM-based AMD Embedded R-Series SoC, codenamed "Hierofalcon," supported with technology from two key ecosystem partners -- Aricent for the networking software stack and Mentor Graphics for embedded Linux and tools. NFV is an innovative solution that simplifies deployment and management for network and telecommunications service providers with a fully virtualized communications infrastructure that helps maximize performance, while working to reduce costs.

At ARM TechCon, AMD specifically showcased the capabilities of an ARM-based NFV solution, virtualizing the functionality of a packet data network gateway, serving gateway, and a mobility management entity. In addition to virtualizing hardware components, AMD showcased a live traffic migration between the ARM-based AMD Embedded R-Series SoC and the x86-based second generation AMD R-Series APU. AMD's ARM-based NFV solution will be especially valuable for telecommunications network infrastructure providers interested in a flexible software-defined networking (SDN) implementation to manage networking services with configurable hardware to help reduce complexity and cost. NFV is the abstraction of numerous network devices such as routers and gateways, to enable relocation of network functions from dedicated hardware appliances to generic servers. With NFV, much of the intelligence currently built into proprietary, specialized hardware is accomplished with software running on general purpose hardware. The resulting solution is a fully virtualized communications infrastructure -- including virtual servers, storage and networks -- that simplifies deployment and management for network and telecommunications service providers. AMD is paving the way for both new and established service providers to design and deploy either x86 or ARM-based NFV infrastructure which meets their performance, cost and complexity requirements.
