Intel Shuts Down its Cryo Cooling Technology Development

According to @momomo_us, Intel has discontinued its Cryo Cooling Technology as of July 1, 2023, marking the end of one of the tech industry's few sub-ambient cooling options. The technology, which could chill CPUs to 0 degrees Celsius to enhance performance, accompanied Intel's processors from the 10th-generation Comet Lake to the 13th-generation Raptor Lake. Despite its innovative approach to boosting CPU performance, the cooling solution was not widely embraced. The discontinuation comes just before the arrival of the 14th Generation Raptor Lake Refresh, which will not support the Cryo Cooling tech. Intel plans to maintain updates for the existing Cryo Cooling hardware until December 31, 2023.

This specialized cooling method did see some use in products like the Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360 Sub-Zero and the EKWB EK-QuantumX Delta TEC waterblocks. Interestingly, the technology has managed to work even with non-Intel CPUs, which famous overclocker der8auer managed to get up and running on AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X. Some modifications were in place, but it was possible to do so. The likely reason for shutting down the cryo cooling project is the need for more financial sense to continue to pursue this technology and the effort to keep the cost of R&D down and make funds available for other projects at Intel's laboratories.

Intel Partners with Submer to Cool 1,000+ Watt Processors using Immersion Cooling

Intel and Submer, a company specializing in immersion cooling, are set to unveil a creative immersion cooling system at the OCP Global Summit. This system can efficiently dissipate 1,000 W of power in a single-phase liquid cooling setup designed for deployment in data centers. Unlike traditional water cooling, immersion cooling systems offer higher efficiency and reliability. The solution developed by Submer and Intel is based on a Forced Convection Heat Sink (FCHS) and leverages a heat exchanger for heat transfer with a second liquid. The primary advantage of immersion cooling is its lack of active components on the cooling element, making it possible for immersed systems to operate without them for extended periods.

In this new system, a copper cooler is housed with two fans at one end to enhance liquid flow through the heat sink using forced convection. However, this active cooling component contradicts the traditional passive concept of immersion cooling based on natural convection. In its initial phase, Submer and Intel utilized Xeon processors with an 800 W TDP, with plans to increase that figure to 1,000 W in the next step. This Forced Convection Heat Sink (FCHS) offers the advantages of easy manufacturing and cost-effective usage while effectively dissipating up to 1,000 W of waste heat, making it a compelling option for immersion cooling. There are even possibilities of being 3D printed, according to Submer, and the plan is to achieve cooling of 1kW+ chip. We expect to hear more about the system during the OCP Global Summit, running from October 17 to 19, as currently, we only have a lower-resolution image from Submer's press release.

ZALMAN Cooling at Computex 2023: Compound Fans, Stackable Fans, Dual Impeller AIOs

ZALMAN, of the cooling noise prevention system (CNPS) legacy, introduced a slew of PC cooling products at the 2023 Computex. The lineup was led by the innovative Reserator5 Z-series AIO CPU coolers, which use two sets of impellers in the pump-block. One of these is dedicated for the coolant intake, after the coolant passes through the block's micro-fin lattice, it's picked up by a second impeller, which pushes it to the radiator. The dual-impeller design also provides a degree of redundancy in case one of them fails. This ZALMAN's original design, which it has patented. This cooler comes in two models, the Reserator5 Z24 (240 mm x 120 mm radiator), and the Reserator 5 Z36 (360 mm x 120 mm radiator). The impellers turn at synchronized speeds ranging between 1,000 to 2,100 RPM, while each of the included fans do 800 to 2,000 RPM, pushing up to 77.37 CFM of airflow, at 37 dBA noise output.

The next major AIO series showcased by ZALMAN is the Alpha series, which comes in three variants—Alpha 24 (240 mm x 120 mm radiator), Alpha 28 (280 mm x 140 mm), and Alpha 36 (360 mm x 120 mm). This cooler uses a more traditional single-impeller design, although the pump-block has an interesting design that resembles a heatsink. It's topped with 7-segment LED display that puts out coolant temperature in real-time. The pump runs at speeds of up to 3,200 RPM, while each of the included fans do 500 to 1,800 RPM, pushing up to 71.1 CFM at 38 dBA. Both of ZALMAN's new AIO series support the latest CPU socket types, including LGA1700, AM5, LGA1200, and AM4. Among the air-based CPU coolers shown were the new CNPS13X (single fin-stack with push-pull fans), and the CNPS13X Plus (dual fin-stack). The CNPS13X uses a single large aluminium fin-stack, and two 120 mm fans in push-pull mode. The CNPS13X Plus is a D-type dual-fin-stack cooler, with two included fans. Both coolers come with CPU surface temperature displays.

MSI VGA Cooling Innovations at Computex 2023: DynaVC and Fusion Chill AIO

MSI at the 2023 Computex introduced a few new graphics card cooling innovations. These include the DynaVC and Fusion Chill AIO. DynaVC is an air-based cooling solution that uses a 3-dimensional vapor chamber base-plate. Conventional vapor chamber plates tend to be flat surfaces, requiring the rest of the cooler to make planar contact with it. MSI's uses a 3-D form for better contact with the GPU, as well as conventional heatpipes, and eliminates the need for soldering between the heatpipes and the vapor chamber. From here, the heatpipes spread heat across the length of the aluminium fin-stack heatsink.

Fusion Chill is an all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooling solution that's fully integrated onto the card—there are no coolant tubes hanging out of the card that lug a discrete radiator. MSI innovated the pump-block to be as thin as possible, along with a copper base-plate that makes contact with all key hot components. From here, a short-length coolant tubing takes it to a custom-shape radiator that integrated the coolant reservoir that has 15% more coolant volume than that of a 240 mm AIO. A pair of high static-pressure variants of its TorX series fans ventilate the radiator. The entire cooling solution is fully integrated with the card like any air-cooler would. MSI is planning to debut this cooler with an upcoming SUPRIM series graphics card.
