Kingston Technology Remains Top DRAM Module Supplier for 2021

Kingston Technology Company, Inc., a world leader in memory products and technology solutions, today announced it has been ranked top third-party DRAM module supplier in the world, according to the latest rankings by revenue from analyst firm TrendForce (formerly DRAMeXchange). Kingston retains its number 1 position with an estimated 78.7% market share on $14.2B (USD) revenue. TrendForce states that Kingston increased revenue by 8% YoY marking the 19th consecutive year that Kingston has held the top spot.

According to the report, the world's top five memory module houses accounted for 90% of total sales in 2021 with Kingston holding nearly 80% of that market. As one of the leading buyers of DRAM chips in the world, Kingston provides a highly customized production model which has led to continuous growth in shipment scale and drove increased revenue by 8%. TrendForce states that pandemic-induced lifestyle changes and the demand for distance learning grew in the past two years, driving the growth of DRAM module shipments. Kingston took the approach to be prepared for those segments. Kingston's success is largely attributed to their working attitude of 'Kingston Is With You,' which solidifies the dominant force the company holds among consumers and organizations alike looking to upgrade new and existing systems.

Intel's 13th Gen Raptor Lake Lineup Leaks

Courtesy of Wccftech, we now have a complete picture of what Intel is planning to announce on the 27th of this month. The information is extremely detailed and covers no less than 14 different processor SKUs, ranging from the Core i9-13900K/KF to the Core i5-13400/F. All of the CPUs except the Core i5-13400/F and the upcoming Core i3 models will support memory speeds of up to DDR5 5600, whereas the lower end parts will be limited to DDR5 4800. All 13th Gen Intel CPUs should also support DDR4 3200 memory. Just as with the 12th Gen CPUs, the 13th Gen KF and F will not support ECC memory and of course, no IGP.

There's nothing that really stands out when looking at the specs and most things are expected based on earlier rumours. The Core i9-13900K/KF will indeed boost up to 5.8 GHz on up to two cores and all P-cores will boost up to 5.4 GHz, with the E-cores boosting up to 4.3 GHz. The Core i7-13700K/KF will have a much bigger gap here, compared to the the Core i7-12700K/KF versus the Core i9-12900K/KF where there was a 200 MHz boost frequency gap, which has now been extended to 400 MHz, as the Core i7-13700K/KF only boosts up to 5.4 GHz on two cores. Interestingly, the base clock frequency for the P-cores seems to have dropped 200 MHz on theK/KF parts, compared to 12th Gen equivalents in the product stack. Intel 700-series Chipset Motherboards Feature Higher Memory OC Headroom Complementing That of "Raptor Lake"

Intel 700-series chipset motherboards could come with improved memory overclocking capabilities, suggest an alleged leaked specs-sheet of an MSI Intel Z790 chipset motherboard. As the pioneering platform for DDR5, Intel 600-series chipset motherboards, particularly those based on the Z690, typically marketed DDR5 memory overclock speeds of around DDR5-6000 or DDR5-6200 in their specs sheets, as the then-expensive DDR5 memory kits started at JEDEC-spec speeds of DDR5-4800 in the entry-level, with performance-segment kits around the DDR5-6000 mark.

The unnamed MSI Z790 chipset motherboard supports DDR5 overclocked frequencies of over DDR5-6800 at 1DPC (one DIMM per channel) with single-rank modules; over DDR5-6400 with 1DPC + dual-rank modules; over DDR5-6400 with 2DPC + single-rank modules; and over DDR5-5600 with 2DPC + dual-rank. Earlier reports suggested that Intel is "discouraging" motherboard vendors from coming up with 700-series motherboards that feature DDR4 memory slots, but this doesn't mean there won't be any. MSI has an Intel Z790 motherboard with DDR4 slots in the works, and it's capable of overclocks of up to DDR4-5000 in the most optimal configuration, and DDR4-4000 in the least optimal one.

Qualcomm Wants Server Market to Run its New Processors, a Re-Launch Could Happen

Qualcomm is a company well known for designing processors going inside a vast majority of smartphones. However, the San Diego company has been making attempts to break out of its vision to focus on smartphones and establish new markets where it could show its potential for efficient processor design. According to Bloomberg's insights, Qualcomm is planning to re-enter the server market and try again to compete in the now very diverse space. In 2014, Qualcomm announced that the company is developing an Arm ISA-based CPU that will target servers and be an excellent alternative for cloud service providers looking at efficient designs called Centriq. Later on, in November of 2017, the company announced the first CPU Centriq 2400, which had 48 custom Falkor cores, six-channel DDR4 memory, and 60 MB of L3 cache.

What happened later is that the changing management of the company slowly abandoned the project, and the Arm CPU market was a bit of a dead-end for many projects. However, in recent years, many companies began designing Arm processors, and now the market is ready for a player like Qualcomm to re-enter this space. With the acquisition of Nuvia Inc., which developed crazy fast CPU IPs under the leadership of industry veterans, these designs could soon see the light of the day. It is reported that Qualcomm is in talks with Amazon's AWS cloud division, which has agreed to take a look at Qualcomm's offerings.

Intel Intros NUC 12 Pro "Wall Street Canyon" Compact Commercial Desktops

Bloated Inventory and Manufacturers Sacrificing Pricing for Sales, Consumer DRAM Price Decline Expands to 13~18%, Says TrendForce

According to TrendForce investigations into the DRAM market, under pressure from ever-increasing output, Korean manufacturers have significantly increased their willingness to compromise on pricing in order to stimulate buying from distributors and customers, leading to a steady expansion of falling prices. In addition to Korean manufacturers enthusiastically slashing prices, low-priced chips from the spot market are also circulating in the market. Other suppliers have no choice but to follow suit and fervently reduce pricing for sales, rapidly exacerbating the 3Q consumer DRAM price drop from the original estimate of 8~13% to a quarterly decline of 13-18%.

Looking forward to Q4, it will be difficult for stocking momentum to recover before terminal inventories have been completely depleted. TrendForce expects the price of consumer DRAM to continue to fall until oversupply in the market is alleviated. Thus, consumer DRAM pricing will carry on moving lower by another 3~8% in Q4 and the possibility of sustained decline cannot be ruled out.

ASRock Intros WRX80 Creator Motherboard for Threadripper PRO 5000 Processors

ASRock today introduced the WRX80 Creator, a Socket WRX8 motherboard for AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 series workstation processors. Built in the E-ATX form-factor, the board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX, a 6-pin PCIe, and two 8-pin EPS connectors. The star attraction with this platform is 8-channel DDR4 memory, with all eight memory slots on this board featuring a dedicated memory channel. There are seven PCI-Express 4.0 x16 slots, from which five operate at full x16 bandwidth, and two can subtract 8 lanes each from two of the other x16 slots. So x16/x16/x16/NC/x16/NC/x16, or x16/x16/x8/x8/x8/x8/x16.

Storage connectivity on the ASRock WRX80 Creator include two M.2 PCIe Gen 4 slots, and a U.2 port, besides eight SATA 6 Gbps. Networking interfaces include two 10 GbE, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 1 GbE used by the IPMI controller. Speaking of which, an ASPEED AST2500 provides basic display and various remote management capabilities. USB connectivity includes two 40 Gbps USB4 ports with mini-DP inputs for DisplayPort passthrough, four 10 Gbps USB 3.2, and a number of 5 Gbps USB 3.2 ports. AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 Series Processors Available to the DIY Market

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series processors have been available since March in Lenovo systems. In the meantime, system integrators and OEMs got their hands on these processors and started selling systems based around them. However, today the DIY channel is equipped with these monstrous CPUs. With up to 64 cores and 128 threads of Zen3 IP, these processors can boost up to 4.5 GHz and have 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and an eight-channel DDR4 integrated memory controller with 280 Watt TDP across all models. AMD has noted that the non-Pro Threadripper 5000 series is ceasing production in favor of these Pro models and justifying the increased price point by adding more L3 cache and more cores.

The 24C/48T Threadripper Pro 5965WX comes with a 3.8 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost frequency with 128 MB of L3 cache, and it is priced at 2399 USD. The bigger Threadripper Pro 5975WX is equipped with 32C/64T configuration, has a 3.6 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost speed, and carries 128 MB of L3 cache while priced at 3299 USD. The top-end Threadripper Pro 5995WX is a monstrous 64C/128T design with a base frequency of 2.7 GHz and a boost of 4.5 GHz. It has 256 MB of L3 cache and costs a staggering 6499 USD. Additionally, all of the new Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series CPUs require a WRX80-based motherboard chipset, which is an additional expense of its own.

DDR5 Memory Boosts Intel Raptor Lake Performance by up to 20% Compared to DDR4

As we approach the launch of Intel's upcoming Raptor Lake desktop processors, we are getting more leaks of testing performed by system integrators and 3rd parties that have early access to the engineering sample (ES) chips. A few days ago, we saw an Intel Core i7-13700K CPU run Geekbench 5 benchmark with the older DDR4 memory on ASRock Z690 Steel Legend WiFi 6E. Today, we are seeing a similar test performed on the same processor, with ASRock Z690 Steel Legend WiFi 6E/D5 equipped with DDR5 memory. While the previous DDR4 testing used modules running at 3200 MT/s, the DDR5 testing uses 5200 MT/s rated DRAM with unknown timings and setup.

As far as performance goes, the single-core result of the 16-core Intel Core i7-13700K processor was 2090 points with DDR4, while DDR5 showed a slight regression of 2069 points. Of course, this could be attributed to the margin of error. As far as multi-core performance goes, the DDR4 testing managed to produce 16542 points, whereas the DDR5-equipped platform scored 19811 points. This is an immediate 20% performance uplift in multi-core score. It shows that all the cores present in Raptor Lake processors are starving for bandwidth, and a faster memory protocol can bring quite an improvement. As usual, we have to wait to confirm this information with our testing so that we can draw more conclusions.

Intel Raptor Lake Launch and Availability Dates Revealed

A post on Chinese forum Bilibili has revealed more exact details with regards to when Intel's Raptor Lake series of processors will launch and if nothing changes between now and then, the K and KF SKU's should be announced as previously thought, at the Intel Innovation '22 event that kicks off on the 27th of September. Retail availability, alongside Z790 motherboards should be about a month later, starting the week of the 17th of October. We've confirmed these dates with our own sources, but as always with early information, these things can change.

The rest of the Raptor Lake family of CPUs, as well as the H770 and B760 chipsets are expected to launch at CES 2023 in January and the poster on Bilibili claims that retail sales should be sometime in the second half of January. We've not been able to confirm the latter information here. As per older rumours, Intel is expected to change the PCIe lane allocation for the Z790 chipset compared to Z690 and based on the information posted, Z790 will have 20 PCIe 4.0 and eight PCIe 3.0 lanes, vs. 12 PCIe 4.0 and 16 PCIe 3.0 for the Z690 chipset. Raptor Lake is also said to get native support for faster DDR5 5600 memory, rather than just 4800 MHz DDR5 for Alder Lake. There are apparently no changes to the CPU PCIe lanes and DDR4 support is still here, but once again, no changes have been made to the DDR4 memory controller.

Intel Core i7-13700K Raptor Lake-S CPU Runs Geekbench

With Intel Raptor Lake-S desktop processors around the corner, we see an ever-increasing number of entries to the popular synthetic benchmark databases. Yesterday we had an Intel Core i5-3600K CPU, while today, we are presented with Core i7-13700K SKU. The new 13th generation Core i7-13700K CPU features eight P-cores and eight E-cores. Compared to the 12th generation Core i7-12700K, this is a step up with eight P-cores and four E-cores. According to Geekbench 5 benchmark, the new Qualification Sample (QS) of Core i7-13700K CPU was running at the minimum clock of 5.289 GHz, maximum clock of 5.381 GHz, and average speed of 5.36 GHz. It was tested on the same configuration as yesterday's i5 SKU with ASRock Z690 Steel Legend WiFi 6E motherboard with 32 GB of DDR4 memory.

As far as the results are concerned, the 13th gen i7-13700K SKU scored 2090 points in the single-core test, while the multi-core score totaled 16542 points. If we compare this to the 12th gen i7-12700K CPU that it replaces, the new model leads by about 10% and 17% in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

The IRDM gaming brand, meeting the expectations of gamers and PC builders, introduces new white DRAM memory modules, which are distinguished by red details and marking of heat sinks. The IRDM PRO DDR4 Crimson White series is a response to the growing interest in PC sets made of white components. The latest modules in the IRDM portfolio are characterized by a frequency of 3600 MHz with timings 18-22-22 and a voltage of 1.35 V. The offer includes single modules with capacities of 8 and 16 GB, as well as the increasingly popular Dual Channel 16 and 32 GB sets.

Glenfly Details its Arise-GT10C0 Graphics Card

It's not only Intel that has been showing off new graphics cards recently, as Chinese company Glenfly has revealed more details about its Arise-GT10C0 graphics card. To be clear from the start, this is not a graphics card for gamers, but rather for the PRC government and its computers, as the nation is trying to become self-sufficient when it comes to computer hardware for its government agencies and other government backed organisations. The 28 nm GPU has a clock speed of a whopping 500 MHz and delivers 1.5 TFLOPs of FP32 performance, which places it firmly in yesteryear's performance category. Glenfly claims support for up to 4K resolution, althought this is most likely only for desktop use.

The GPU is paired with 2 or 4 GB of DDR4 memory with a clock speed of 1200 MHz, using either a 64 or a 128 bit memory interface. The actual cards have a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface and have support for unspecified HDMI and DP interfaces, as well as D-Sub VGA ports. Driver support includes DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.5 and OpenCL 1.2. The GPU is also said to have hardware offload support for HEVC and H.264 hardware encoding, as well as decoding for both formats, plus most other common video formats, although, oddly enough, support for AVS, which is China's homebrewed video codec, is missing. OS support includes various Chinese flavours of Linux, Ubuntu and Windows according to Glenfly and outside of the x86 processor world, MIPS and arm based processors are said be supported.
