NVIDIA Brings RTX and DLSS to Arm Platform

NVIDIA at GDC dropped a major hint at where it wants to take PC gaming post the Arm acquisition. The company is demonstrating its RTX real-time raytracing technology, and the DLSS performance enhancement, on an Arm processor by MediaTek. To the PC, this means NVIDIA is laying the foundations of gaming in the post-x86 world where it holds Arm IP; foundations that were dug up by Apple and its mighty M1 chip, based on Arm CPU technology.

Making this unequivocal, was MediaTek. "RTX is the most groundbreaking technology to come to PC gaming in the last two decades," said PC Tseng, general manager of MediaTek's Intelligent Multimedia Business Unit."MediaTek and NVIDIA are laying the foundation for a new category of Arm-based high-performance PCs." The Taiwan-based Arm SoC major has developed a new Arm-based PC processor called Kompanio 1200, which it hopes will power PC platforms much like the Apple M1 or the Qualcomm Compute Platforms.

Hydrogen Series Makes a Comeback, MSI Preparing GeForce RTX 3090 Model

MSI's iconic Hydrogen series of graphics cards are making a comeback. According to the latest Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) listings, we have information about the latest addition to MSI's lineup of graphics cards. For starters, MSI has filled EEC reports about its upcoming GeForce RTX 3060 LHR variants, which feature an updated GA106-302 GPU. The new cards will carry the LHR name as a part of the official product name, to be easily separated from non-LHR variants, so buyers know exactly what model they are getting.

Additionally, MSI is seemingly making a comeback of its Hydrogen series. Hydrogen lineup used to be popular with GeForce GTX 580 Hydrogen card, which delivered awesome overclocking performance enabled by a water block strapped onto the card. If MSI brings the series back, it will come in the form of the GeForce RTX 3090 Hydrogen model, which could represent the highest-end RTX 3090 design from the company. It remains to be seen what MSI does with it, and if we are getting it at all, so we have to wait for more information.

Building upon RTX, the second-generation of GPUs will feature new RT Cores, Tensor Cores, and streaming multiprocessors. The RT and Tensor Cores both have double the throughput as before. There are 10,240 CUDA cores onboard powering the 3080 Ti Gallardo. It also possesses 12 GB of GDDR6X memory, and memory speeds of up to 19 Gbps. Boost clock has been increased to 1680 MHz. The performance makes the 3080 Ti Gallardo a legitimate challenger as a top of the class graphics card.

The 3080 Ti Gallardo comes with a familiar triple fan front plate, in a slightly more sophisticated shade of gray. There are also four apertures on the shroud for the lighting elements below. The LEDs are software-controllable. The aluminium back plate lends structural rigidity to the 3-slot GPU. Six copper composite heat pipes and segmented heat sink design help to effectively dissipate heat. A-acceleration will be greatly empowered by the onboard technology, and this inspired the packaging design. The front features a colorful explosion of connections representing the unlocked potential the new GPUs provides.

Graphics Card Prices in Germany Fall to the Lowest Point Since February

The German media outlet, 3D Center, has today published an updated report for July, measuring graphics card pricing in Germany and Austria, showing some pretty interesting results. The report is only measuring the pricing index of these two countries and their retailers, so it does not apply to other regions. An interesting discovery is that GPU prices have now hit the lowest point since February of this year when the sharp price incline started. At the time of reporting, GPU prices are exaggerated by around 53% over the MSRP listed prices. Not only did the prices drop, but the supply of GPUs like AMD Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti became much better, as consumers can get their hands on these now.

When looking at the graph below, note that MSRP is listed as 100%, and the percentage shown is the increase over that MSRP. When it comes to complete price reduction to the MSRP, 3D Center expects it to happen in 3-4 weeks possibly. If current data is to be believed, MSRP is slowly decreasing and supply is increasing rapidly. For more details and per-card pricing situation, head over to 3D Center website here. Here is an important statement from 3D Center about the current situation:
3D Center (translated from German)Of course, this means that current street prices for graphics cards are (mostly) still exaggerated - and above all that this is the worst possible time to buy a graphics card. Because the (now clearly verifiable) tendency points to clearly lower graphics card prices in the next few weeks, with a similar pace, street prices at list price level could be in sight in 3-4 weeks. It is possible that there will be a certain braking effect in the downward price movement beforehand - but at least the way up to that point should definitely be taken with you. Apparently the delivery quantities are currently sufficient, maybe the need is a bit lower because of the summer times (and no longer available on the part of the crypto miners)so that retailers receive more cards than they sell. Since the retailers usually bought their cards from the distributors at an exaggerated price, the big game is now about who can get rid of the expensive stock goods in time to make a profit at all in the face of constantly falling sales prices.

TechPowerUp NVCleanstall 1.10.0 Released

TechPowerUp today released the latest version of NVCleanstall, our handy, lightweight utility that lets you customize your NVIDIA drivers installation to a much greater degree than the "Custom" install option in the NVIDIA Installer, letting you toggle components and features you didn't even know exist. The latest version 1.10.0 introduces several updates. For starters, it fixes ShadowPlay not working (even though selected), due to a missing reference to NvModuleTracker. We've introduced an additional driver signing mode that's compatible with EasyAntiCheat. NVCleanstall now discards the generated private key once the signature rebuild is complete, for additional security.

We've introduced a feature that lets you create a self-contained EXE installer with the installation options you've selected. The option to disable NVContainer has been introduced, however, this may break GeForce Experience, and removes NVIDIA's Desktop context menu. You can configure MSI (message-signaled-interrupt) CPU selection and priority. NVCleanstall also makes sure MSI only gets activated on NVIDIA GPU devices. An option has been added letting you disable HDCP. The app now warns you that UWP apps can't be installed in Safe Mode, if you request the Control Panel app while running in Safe Mode. The app also warns about installation of GeForce Experience in Safe Mode. Both these limitations are due to Safe Mode, not NVCleanstall. When customizing your install, you can now also provide hooks to run programs before and after installation. Grab NVCleanstall from the link below.

MSI Pledges to Solve Graphics Card Shortages Single-Handedly... Thanks to the GeForce GT 730?

This just goes to show exactly how starved the market is for graphics cards - that the puny GeForce GT 730, from seven years ago, is being relaunched by a graphics card company. MSI might be oddballing the market here, since we haven't seen any other brand offering this particular graphics card. Of course, this won't solve the gaming graphics card shortage - this is a product that's meant for users that don't have a GPU output on their CPU and need to have a discrete solution.

The GT730 may have been revived partly due to its usage of DDR3 VRAM instead of the now ubiquitous GDDR6 - the pricing pf which is bound to increase, as we've seen with current ridiculous levels of demand. The GT 730 packs 384 CUDA cores and features a 902 MHz boost clock and 2 GB of DDR3 memory operating at 1,600 MHz across a 64-bit memory interface. The GT 730 sips only 23 W of power, meaning that it doesn't need any power delivery outside that of the PCIe port - and aiding in the card's passive cooling. The fact that this is a Kepler card - and the fact that NVIDIA has announced end of support for Kepler cards with the release of the GeForce R470 drivers - should actually have no impact on its preferred usage on today's technology landscape.

NVIDIA to End "Kepler" Support with R470 Drivers, 9 Years After Release: Support Roadmap

NVIDIA is planning to stop releasing driver updates to the "Kepler" generation of GPUs with the R470 driver series, according to a company driver support roadmap. Updated Software Support Matrix tables for datacenter GPUs, reveal, that the R470 drivers, released in 2021, will be the final driver updates to the "Kepler" architecture, completing 9 (!) years of driver updates since the architecture's 2012 debut. Support for the older "Fermi" ended with R390. A roadmap diagram also explains the various branches under which NVIDIA drivers are developed and released.

Although the roadmap predominantly refers to data-center GPUs, it's very likely that support for the GeForce GTX 600 "Kepler" series will end with GeForce R470 drivers, too, if not sooner. As of this writing, the current GeForce R465 series drivers do support GTX 600 series "Kepler," even if not all day-one game optimizations are applied all the way back to this series.
