AMD Launches Prebuilt Desktop Line in China Featuring New Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Thanks to a recent report from VideoCardz, we learned that AMD has introduced a series of prebuilt desktop computers in China featuring their new Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. The systems are being sold through AMD's store on JD.com rather than through traditional computer manufacturers. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, which launches November 7 at $479, will be the centerpiece of these systems. For the components, AMD partnered with several manufacturers: ASUS supplies motherboards and graphics cards, Thermalright provides the 360 mm 360 Frozen Infinity AIO liquid cooling system, and LOONGTR makes the computer cases, which include Ryzen branding. The company is offering seven different configurations. Each system includes 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and uses an ASUS TUF Gaming B650M-Plus motherboard with 1 TB storage, except for one model with a Prime X670E-Pro motherboard with 2 TB storage.

Prices range from $1,000 for the base model without a graphics card to $2,100 for the version with AMD's RX 7900 XTX graphics card. Some models include NVIDIA graphics cards instead of AMD's own, specifically the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super. The computers will be available starting November 7, just before Singles' Day on November 11, a major shopping event in China. It overlaps with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D launch, given that it is the heart of the system. AMD already sells other prebuilt systems in the Chinese market, including models with various Ryzen processors and graphics cards, such as the China-only RX 6750 GRE.

Acer Regulatory Filings Reveal Radeon RX 7900, RX 7800, and RX 7700 non-XT GPUs

Regulatory filings by PC OEM major Acer, with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), drop some of the first references to three upcoming performance-segment graphics card SKUs by AMD. These include the Radeon RX 7900, the Radeon RX 7800, and the Radeon RX 7700. Acer is an AMD Radeon add-in board partner under its Acer Predator brand, which makes graphics cards not just for Predator and Nitro gaming PCs, but also graphics cards for the retail channel.

At this point, there are no specs known for the three, not even their memory sizes. It would be interesting to see how AMD slots the three into its product stack, particularly the RX 7900. The company currently has three RX 7900 series SKUs—the flagship RX 7900 XTX, and the second-best RX 7900 XT, but then the SKU next to this is the RX 7900 GRE, which saw a worldwide launch. Then there are the RX 7800 and RX 7700, which are pretty straightforward to predict. The RX 7800 will slot in between the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, and will probably feature a 256-bit wide memory interface with 16 GB of memory, much like the RX 7800 XT; whereas the RX 7700 will be positioned below the RX 7700 XT. It wouldn't surprise us if AMD further cuts down the memory interface to 160-bit (10 GB).

ASRock Innovates First AMD Radeon RX 7000 Graphics Card with 12V-2x6 Power Connector

ASRock is ready with the first Radeon RX gaming graphics card to feature a modern 12V-2x6 power connector, replacing the up to three 8-pin PCIe power connectors it took, to power a Radeon RX 7900 series graphics card. The ASRock RX 7900 series WS graphics cards are also the first 2-slot RX 7900 series graphics cards. They target workstations and GPU rendering farms that stack multiple graphics cards into 4U or 5U rackmount cases, with no spacing between 2-slot graphics cards. ASRock is designing cards based on both the RX 7900 XT, and the flagship RX 7900 XTX.

The ASRock RX 7900 series WS graphics cards appear long and no more than 2 slots thick. To achieve these dimensions, a lateral-flow cooling solution is used, which combines a dense aluminium or copper channel heatsink with a lateral blower. Remember we said these cards are meant for workstations or rendering farms? So the noise output will be deafening, at least up to datacenter standards. The most striking aspect of these cards of course is their 12+4 pin ATX 12V-2x6 power input, which is capable of drawing 600 W of continuous power from a single cable. It's located at the card's tail-end, where it would have been an engineering challenge to put three 8-pin connectors.

AMD Documents the Firmware of its GPU Scheduler that Distributes Graphics and Compute Workloads Among Shader Engines

AMD earlier this month released documentation for the Micro Engine Scheduler (MES) firmware of its RDNA 3 GPUs. The MES is a hardware component that distributes graphics processing and general-purpose compute workloads among the main number-crunching machinery of the AMD GPU—the shader engines, which contain the compute units (CU), the indivisible SIMD muscle of the GPU with programmable shaders and certain kinds of specialized hardware, such as the AI Accelerator and Ray Accelerator. The MES is driven by a programmable firmware, which is what AMD released developer documentation of.

The decision to release MES documentation probably comes from the very top of AMD corporate management. In March, a controversy erupted when Tiny Corp, builders of AI compute servers and workstations, complained of issues testing the Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card with a ROCm compute stack, prompting a response from no less than CEO Dr Lisa Su. There were then calls to open-source the firmware, which AMD didn't agree to, probably since it treads on their core GPU hardware IP; but the company did the next best thing, by releasing detailed developer documentation for the MES firmware.

ASUS Intros Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT DUAL OC Graphics Cards

ASUS introduced the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT DUAL OC graphics cards. The two join ASUS's rather slim RX 7900 series custom-design lineup, which until now only included the TUF Gaming OC products for the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. ASUS's common board design for the cards it's launching, features a large cooler shroud, a tall, yet triple-slot board design, and a cooling solution that uses an aluminium fin-stack heatsink that uses no more than two Axial-Tech fans, hence the name DUAL OC. We've seen this exact board design on some of the RTX 30-series "Ampere" DUAL OC products, so ASUS may probably be carrying over the design, with suitable changes for compatibility with the "Navi 31" GPU.

Both the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT DUAL OC cards feature a milder factory overclock compared to the company's TUF Gaming OC products. The RX 7900 XTX DUAL OC does 2455 MHz Game clock (compared to 2365 MHz reference); while the RX 7900 XT DUAL OC offers 2075 MHz Game clocks compared to 2025 MHz AMD reference. It's also interesting to note here, that the RX 7900 XTX/XT DUAL OC cards feature a significantly different board design than the RX 7900 GRE DUAL OC, which features a design closer to that of the RX 7800 XT DUAL OC. Both the RX 7900 XT DUAL OC and RX 7900 XTX DUAL OC feature triple 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and display I/O that includes three DisplayPort 2.1, and one HDMI 2.1. Besides the minimal RGB, the cards offer dual-BIOS, with the Q-BIOS running them at reference speeds, and with a tighter fan curve. The card measures 32.3 cm in length, 14.7 cm in height, and is no more than 3 slots thick. The company didn't reveal pricing.

AMD RDNA 5 a "Clean Sheet" Graphics Architecture, RDNA 4 Merely Corrects a Bug Over RDNA 3

AMD's future RDNA 5 graphics architecture will bear a "clean sheet" design, and may probably not even have the RDNA branding, says WJM47196, a source of AMD leaks on ChipHell. Two generations ahead of the current RDNA 3 architecture powering the Radeon RX 7000 series discrete GPUs, RDNA 5 could see AMD reimagine the GPU and its key components, much in the same way RDNA did over the former "Vega" architecture, bringing in a significant performance/watt jump, which AMD could build upon with its successful RDNA 2 powered Radeon RX 6000 series.

Performance per Watt is the biggest metric on which a generation of GPUs can be assessed, and analysts believe that RDNA 3 missed the mark with generational gains in performance/watt despite the switch to the advanced 5 nm EUV process from the 7 nm DUV. AMD's decision to disaggregate the GPU, with some of its components being built on the older 6 nm node may have also impacted the performance/watt curve. The leaker also makes a sensational claim that "Navi 31" was originally supposed to feature 192 MB of Infinity Cache, which would have meant 32 MB segments of it per memory cache die (MCD). The company instead went with 16 MB per MCD, or just 96 MB per GPU, which only get reduced as AMD segmented the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 GRE by disabling one or two MCDs.

AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs Could Stick with 18 Gbps GDDR6 Memory

Today, we have the latest round of leaks that suggest that AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards, codenamed the "RX 8000-series," might continue to rely on GDDR6 memory modules. According to Kepler on X, the next-generation GPUs from AMD are expected to feature 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory, marking the fourth consecutive RDNA architecture to employ this memory standard. While GDDR6 may not offer the same bandwidth capabilities as the newer GDDR7 standard, this decision does not necessarily imply that RDNA 4 GPUs will be slow performers. AMD's choice to stick with GDDR6 is likely driven by factors such as meeting specific memory bandwidth requirements and cost optimization for PCB designs. However, if the rumor of 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory proves accurate, it would represent a slight step back from the 18-20 Gbps GDDR6 memory used in AMD's current RDNA 3 offerings, such as the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX GPUs.

AMD's first generation RDNA used GDDR6 with 12-14 Gbps speeds, RDNA 2 came with GDDR6 at 14-18 Gbps, and the current RDNA 3 used 18-20 Gbps GDDR6. Without an increment in memory generation, speeds should stay the same at 18 Gbps. However, it is crucial to remember that leaks should be treated with skepticism, as AMD's final memory choices for RDNA 4 could change before the official launch. The decision to use GDDR6 versus GDDR7 could have significant implications in the upcoming battle between AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel's next-generation GPU architectures. If AMD indeed opts for GDDR6 while NVIDIA pivots to GDDR7 for its "Blackwell" GPUs, it could create a disparity in memory bandwidth performance between the competing products. All three major GPU manufacturers—AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel with its "Battlemage" architecture—are expected to unveil their next-generation offerings in the fall of this year. As we approach these highly anticipated releases, more concrete details on specifications and performance capabilities will emerge, providing a clearer picture of the competitive landscape.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE To Launch Globally on February 27

AMD's Radeon RX 7900 GRE, or Golden Rabbit Edition, which was previously available only to the Chinese market, will launch globally on February 27. According to the leaked slides, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE will launch at $549, and AMD is comparing it to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 non-SUPER graphics card. In case you missed it, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is based on the Navi 31 XL GPU with 80 Compute Units (CUs), which leaves it with 5120 Stream Processors, and comes with 16 GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory interface, which adds up to a maximum bandwidth of 576 GB/s. The Radeon RX 7900 GRE should fit nicely between the Radeon RX 7900 XT and the Radeon RX 7800 XT.

According to the leaked slides, AMD is comparing the Radeon RX 7900 GRE against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 non-SUPER, which now shares the same price after the recent $50 price cut. According to AMD's own slides, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE should provide around 14 percent more performance per buck on average, and is between 1 and 32 percent faster, at least in games tested by AMD.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Drops Down to $699, Matches Radeon RX 7900 XT Price

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti an now be found for as low as $699, which means it is now selling at the same price as the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti definitely lags behind the Radeon RX 7900 XT, and packs less VRAM (12 GB vs. 20 GB), and the faster GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is selling for around $100 more. The Radeon RX 7900 XT is around 6 to 11 percent faster, depending on the game and the resolution.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti card in question comes from MSI and it is Ventus 2X OC model listed over at Newegg.com for $749.99 with a $50-off promotion code. Bear in mind that this is a dual-fan version from MSI and we are quite sure we'll see similar promotions from other NVIDIA AIC partners.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Now $100 Cheaper Than GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER

Prices of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card hit new lows, with a Sapphire custom-design card selling for $699 with a coupon discount on Newegg. This puts its price a whole $100 cheaper (12.5% cheaper) than the recently announced NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER. The most interesting part of the story is that the RX 7900 XT is technically from a segment above. Originally launched at $900, the RX 7900 XT is recommended by AMD for 4K Ultra HD gaming with ray tracing; while the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is officially recommended by NVIDIA for maxed out gaming with ray tracing at 1440p, although throughout our testing, we found the card to be capable of 4K Ultra HD gaming.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT offers about the same performance as the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, averaging 1% higher than it in our testing, at the 4K Ultra HD resolution. At 1440p, the official stomping ground of the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, the RX 7900 XT comes out 2% faster. These are, of course pure raster 3D workloads. In our testing with ray tracing enabled, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER storms past the RX 7900 XT, posting 23% higher performance at 4K Ultra HD, and 21% higher performance at 1440p.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Drops to $710 on Newegg, MSRP Lowered to $749

AMD has lowered the official MSRP of the Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card to $749, down from its launch price of $899. Its street price, as TweakTown found out, is lower still, with certain custom-design RX 7900 XT cards selling for as low as $710 on Newegg. At this price, the RX 7900 XT is set up for a major clash with certain overclocked NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics cards, leftover inventories of the recently retired GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, and probably even looks to soak up some sales before the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER hits the scene on January 24. The cheapest RX 7900 XT is actually one of the better-appointed custom designs out there, the ASRock RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming and XFX RX 7900 XT Merc 319, which had originally launched at prices comparable to the PowerColor Hellhound. These are followed by the PowerColor RX 7900 XT Hellhound and Sapphire RX 7900 XT Pulse OC at $720.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is a very capable high-end GPU that AMD categorizes as capable of 4K Ultra HD gaming with settings maxed out. It's carved out from the "Navi 31" chiplet GPU, and configured with 84 RDNA3 compute units, worth 5,376 stream processors, 168 AI accelerators, 84 Ray accelerators, 336 TMUs, and 192 ROPs. The best part about this card is its memory sub-system, with 80 MB of Infinity Cache, and 20 GB of 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory across a 320-bit wide memory bus with 800 GB/s of bandwidth on tap, which should come in handy at 4K, or when using creator or AI applications.

AMD's RX 7900 Series Enjoys Sales Increase in China Following NVIDIA Export Restrictions

A somewhat expected result of the November 17th export ban on RTX 4090 GPUs to China has been that AMD's top offerings; recently rumored to soon suffer the same fate, have been selling faster than AMD or its partners can make them. Predicting the worst, some OEMs such as Dell have allegedly already set their own self-imposed restrictions on the export of both Radeon and Instinct cards to China. Meanwhile insiders in board channels have not yet received any official warning that they can no longer sell RX 7900 XTXs or XTs to DIY markets, however vendors and consumers alike sense an oncoming storm and unable to get RTX 4090s are buying up as many of the high end Radeons as they can.

It's said that AMD's production capacity for this surge in sales has been underwhelming, and supply to Chinese board partners has been barely trickling in. This lack of incoming supply of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT, restriction or not, is creating a shortage of cards in China that is expected to impact the remainder of Q4 2023 and much of Q1 2024. With no immediate restrictions expected for AMD's top cards it's possible that they could react and ramp up exports to cover the demand, however that could be risky if AMD is trying to avoid being targeted.

Dell Allegedly Prohibits Sales of High-End Radeon and Instinct MI GPUs in China

AMD's lineup of Radeon and Instinct GPUs, including the flagship RX 7900 XTX/XT, the professional-grade PRO W7900, and the upcoming Instinct MI300, are facing sales prohibitions in China, according to an alleged sales advisory guide from Dell. This restriction mirrors the earlier ban on NVIDIA's RTX 4090, underscoring the increasing export limitations U.S.-based companies face for high-end semiconductor products that could be repurposed for military and strategic applications. Notably, Dell's report lists several AMD Instinct accelerators, which are integral to data center infrastructure, and Radeon GPUs, which are widely used in PCs, indicating the broad impact of the advisory.

The ban includes discrete GPUs like AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT, which, despite their data-center potential, may still be sold under specific "NEC" eligibility. This status allows for continued sales in restricted regions like sales of NVIDIA's RTX 4090. However, the process to secure NEC eligibility is lengthy, potentially leading to supply shortages and increased GPU prices—a trend already observed with the RX 7900 XTX in China, where it's become a high-end alternative in light of the RTX 4090's scarcity and inflated pricing. The Dell sales advisory also lists that sales of the aforementioned products are banned in 22 countries, including Russia, Iran, Iraq, and others listed below.

AMD Confirms New "Enthusiast-class" Radeon 7000-series Graphics Cards This Quarter

AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su, in her Q2-2023 Financial Results call, confirmed that the company will launch new "enthusiast-class" gaming graphics cards within Q3-2023 (any time before October). "In gaming graphics, we expanded our Radeon 7000 GPU series in the second quarter with the launch of our mainstream RX 7600 cards for 1080p gaming. We are on track to further expand our RDNA 3 GPU offerings with the launch of new, enthusiast-class Radeon 7000 series cards in the third quarter," she stated.

There are two distinct possibilities of what "enthusiast class" entails. The first and most obvious one, could be the introduction of the RX 7800 series, including the RX 7800 XT, which is expected to closely resemble the limited-edition RX 7900 GRE by the specs; but a less talked-about possibility could even be the RX 7950 series. In its testing, the RX 7900 GRE was found to offer raster 3D performance comparable to the previous-generation RX 6950 XT although with better ray tracing performance on account of improved Ray Accelerators, which would put it behind the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti that AMD is trying to compete with. This should mean that for AMD to have a compelling "RX 7800 XT" product, it should perform faster than the RX 7900 GRE (possible through higher clock speeds or a few more CU).

AMD Radeon RX 6000/7000 GPUs Reduce Idle Power Consumption by 81% with VRR Enabled

AMD Radeon RX 6000 and RX 700 series based on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 GPU architectures have been benchmarked by folks over at ComputerBase. However, these weren't regular benchmarks of performance but rather power consumption. According to their latest results, they discovered that enabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can lower the power consumption of AMD Radeon cards in idle. Using a 4K display with a 144 Hz refresh rate, ComputerBase benchmarked Radeon RX 6800/6700 XT and RX 7900 XT, both last-generation and current-generation graphics cards. The performance matrix also includes a comparison to Intel Arc A770, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3080, and RTX 4080.

Regarding performance figures, the tests compare desktop idle consumption, dual monitor power consumption, window movement, YouTube with SDR at 60 FPS, and YouTube with HDR at 60 FPS, all done on a 4K 144 Hz monitor setup. You can see the comparison below, with the most significant regression in power consumption being Radeon RX 7900 XTX using 81% less power in single and 71% less power in dual monitor setup.
