TSMC to be the Sole Supplier of Apple A13 SoCs in 2019

Even as AMD plans to dedicate 7 nm CPU and GPU manufacturing entirely to TSMC, reports are emerging that Apple could make the Taiwanese silicon fabrication giant the sole supplier of its 7 nm A13 SoC, which powers the next generation iPhone and iPad devices. Manufacturing of the A13 could commence in 2019 to keep pace with Apple's roadmaps. TSMC is currently the most strongly placed semiconductor foundry for 7 nm EUV manufacturing, after GlobalFoundries crashed out, and Samsung is trailing behind with a contract to manufacture only a portion of Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon SoCs.

Talk about eggs and baskets. If PRC invades ROC, global electronics industry (and Apple) will collapse.

Doesn't Apple plan to use an APU by 2020 even for it's desktops? I imagine that will be TSMC too.

Nothing confirmed yet, still just rumors btw it could be an SoC, like a high(er) power Ax or something.

Only TSMC has enough capacity planned for global N7-N5-N3 demand.
- GlobalFoundries hit a local snag for Fab 8.2(N3 Fab) which meant no extended funding for EUV+. (GF was also told to stop 7nm and shrink pathfinding by customers.)
- Intel 10nm/7nm/5nm requires new tools to get HVM and reduce production costs.
- Samsung is currently only doing N7 through N3 at S3.

Intel and Samsung can compete with products and TSMC doesn't.

Lets hope Trump obstruct them from doing that.. by forcing apple to manufacture in US or by applying more taxes or by both.
i am not hating apple because their devices are overpriced but because they use cheap chinese and korean labor and manufacturing

And if putin gets drunk and launches some nukes, everybody will die.

Doesnt mean its gonna happen. China has been swooning over taiwan since before I was born, and yet they still dont control it. Invading it loses them a major bargaining chip, and sends their own economy into a downward spiral that they cannot afford.

So you dont want 7nm then?

why would i hate Xiaomi or Huwaei? they use their own labor, and are not overpriced

Except Korean labour isn't cheap, even metaphorically speaking, while in China the wages have been ever increasing at a rate that makes only the largest companies profitable. The thing that some Americans still don't get is that it's economies of scale that works in favor of China, a large part of it is the result of US & Western greed where they invested blindly in China, also making huge often times polluting factories. If the jobs ever come back onshore, they'll be relevant only when automation kicks in otherwise there are still cheaper alternatives to China, too many of them in fact.

Let's hope he does, so Apple crappy products will cost double as they do now, and they'll lose a big part of the market, hopefully.
Also as said, you must hate everyone then!

Apple has contracts in place that assure it something ridiculous like 80% of TSMC's output.

For people not familiar with the idiom: "Put all eggs in one basket"
To invest, devote, or commit all of one's energy or resources into a single venture, opportunity, or goal, generally at the risk of losing everything in the event that that thing fails or does not come to fruition.
Not even necessarily China doing something. TSMC can only produce so much and they could be taking on more orders than they can handle. This doesn't bode well for the electronics industry.

How do you believe Apple has reached 1 trillion dollar market cap? By using US workers that ask for hundreds of thousands of dollars in wage per year, medical ensurances and what not, even before they even come to the interview? Please give me a break with Trump and all this BS. US is where it is today because:
- it avoided the big wars that plagued europe and other parts of the world, reaping the benefits at the end;
- they always have occupied rich places (like oil countries) claiming that they fight terorism and imaginary (invented by them) targets to have control over resources, not caring about the chaos they create;
- they had slaves to work for them for many, many years. Now you love those black people, but they worked their asses to gain that right;
- US economy (and most other developed countries) is practically based on China workforce in these days. Don't start to tell me that you have a lot of factories and shit, cause you have nothing compared to China;
For better or for worse, China has reached the place it stands today though hard work, lives lost, families broken apart, 16 hour working shifts and sleeping on wood beds in a 3x3m rooms with a couple more people and slim wages.

The conclusion of this post should be that if you like your Apple devices to be at 1K price level, they need to be manufactured/designed/engineered in China (that designed in California is a joke really). If you are willing to pay 2K or more dollars on a new iphone, yeah, it can be built on US soil, for sure.

Irony dude .. Irony
My point was that Apples producs are overpriced despite they are produced in a cheap way ... and i agree with what you said. it is called capitalism and greed. thats why US are maintaining its position as the worlds strongest nation (in military). So american dudes work less and get paid the most..and thats why they joined ww2 and thats all what ww1 and ww2 was about.. it was about colonizing the world. colonizong the world so they still other peoples resources and let them be slaves for them
