Italy Creating €4 Billion Chipmaking Fund, Trying to Attract Intel

With Intel still not having announced where in Europe they'll set up shop next, but with Magdeburg, Germany being the hot ticket, Italy is now trying to figure out how they can win over some chip makers, least not Intel. The country is working on a €4 billion chip fund of its own to entice chip makers to set up shop in the nation. However, it seems like the fund is going to spread out over time, as it'll run until 2030, the same time frame as the EU's €15 billion chip fund is going to run. Italy will apparently divide the money in chunks of €500 million per year from 2023 to 2030.

Italy was apparently considering giving it all to Intel, according to Reuters, plus another €4 billion in other incentives, over a 10 year period. If that is still the case, isn't clear, especially as the nation is said to be in talks with STMicroelectronics, MEMC Electronic Materials, Tower Semi (now Intel) and others. Reuters claims that negotiations with Intel are very tough, as the company has a lot of demands. The Italian government is also said to be promoting "research and development of microprocessor technology and investments in new industrial applications of innovative technologies".

Mhm...

And best Italy can produce in on the 28cm process. Instead of waffers they call it 'dough'. Instead of litography they call it 'toppings'.
I really like this process! It makes for excellent products with great options for customization. And yes, madlads put pineapple too!

Check the number of automotive assembly plants in Italy and you'll know why.

In Europe, in this order: Germany, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Italy. So I don't know why hehe.

However, the thing was not about Italy or any country in particular, the thing is that they are companies with gigantic profits and we should not have to give them public money.

I know. For more money. Sadly, all the money are for themselves. Don't let them fool you otherwise.
TheLostSwedeYou forgot Sweden on that list :(
For as much I love the entire country and your odd cuisine, the only good thing that came out of there recently are Sabaton and Raubtier.
Boy, I do miss the old Sweden... Det finns bara krig!

Amore mio, stop wasting time with rumors.
EU funds they are not gift for sharing, its about development of new fab them owned by EU brands.
The Germans are the kings at laser beam tools them be in use all ready at all silicon wafer fab.
Yes its about the tiny microns, the knife this cutting down silicon.
Therefore we have made in Europe knifes, let's now bake some silicon, and make our own chips.

The fab makes the silicon ICs, but those ICs then have to be tested and packaged before they can be sold.
This is why a lot of Intel chips tend to take the route via Mexico, Costa Rica, Malaysia or Vietnam.
I presume this is where Italy wants to try and win Intel over, so the chips can be done 100% in the EU.

Italian chip manufacturing business will have one major weakness. If someone places a piece of pineapple on a wafer, every engineer will suffer a heart attack.
Stereotypical jokes aside, it's good to see Europe trying to get back to doing modern things. What is not good is giving public money to private companies unless there is an actual capitalization plan in place which, in many similar cases, there doesn't seem to be one.
