NVIDIA: Gamers Spend $300 More on Ampere GPUs Than Previous Generations

NVIDIA at its Annual Investor Day announced that the company's coffers are in better shape than ever. And while the company has many baskets from which to pull proverbial profits, the company's gaming division remains its biggest source of income. On its presentation, NVIDIA clarified that gamers are spending on average $300 extra per desktop Ampere product compared to previous graphics product generations. That fact, the company says, has resulted in an average increase in product ASP (Average Selling Price) to the tune of 13% per year in the last five years.

Paired with the increase in graphics products' ASP (meaning NVIDIA brings in more money per sold graphics card) is an increase in the number of graphics cards shipped to customers - at a rate of 11% more graphics cards being sold annually. So NVIDIA is not only selling more expensive graphics cards; they're selling more of them as well. The company expects its financial results to keep steadily improving, even as more and more gamers join the fold. According to the company, the last five-year period saw an average of 50 million additional gamers entering the market per year - and there's no expectation of that figure slowing down.
While higher graphics card pricing is (clearly) good news for both NVIDIA and its investors, the same cannot be said for the consumers that are buying these graphics cards. After more than a year with a severe drought on the graphics card distribution channel and prices that saw a 300% cost increase over MSRP, it doesn't come as a surprise that gamers are paying more for Ampere (let's call it an Ampere tax) than for previous-generation products. However, it's highly unlikely that the average consumer would consider that as much of a boon as NVIDIA does.

Does Nvidia ask itself where should the gamers earn and spend this money from? Money doesn't grow magically on trees, and graphics cards is not a critical purchase, so if they can avoid or postpone, they will.

most people i know either couldn't get an ampere or refused to pay the inflated prices for one either direct or scalped. How does nvidia know that "gamers" were paying the extra cost and not miners?

Got my 30 series.. will pass on 40 series if rumours are true. Should just pass anyways out of spite.

Kind of like when I said don’t buy GPUs 2 years ago and everyone rushed out and blew a scalper to get one.

And with these comments Nvidia can yet again kiss my arse, they're effectively trolling gamer's while presenting a Gtc that was pure AI bullshit( from again a gamer's POV) pure ass.

No dimes from me in that figure and non likely in the future with PR like this shite.

Ffffs I am going to be buried with a Vega 64 at this rate.

Exactly what I'm doing. At this point, GPUs are a lie. They don't exist.

I spent well over 1000 bucks on hobbies last year. Realistically, its more like 3000. Stuff for multiple hobbies. Or a couple of 3080s, with spare change left over. I'd have to live in a cave.

Is this really true, given most buyers of the 30xx cards are miners and not gamers! Seem they are missleading their invetsors?

Me too but they're outside and in the UK that's not warm.
Then again I can't afford heat either now so good plan I'm getting my RS out the garage (after some minor fixes and a mot) :)

Not gonna lie, I am one of those that purchased their card at an inflated rate. I have had my card now for about 6 months and I don't see me getting a new one anytime soon. I used to be about the latest shiny thing, but really, I hope I get 5-6 years if not more out of my current system. Power and heat on these newer parts is getting scary. The performance gains vs what you pay have been diminishing for quite some time. Given the last two generations of GPUs from all vendors, I don't see the "rational" pricing coming back. MSRP is just a marketing thing now.

Funny when thinking that I haven't paid over 300EUR for a GPU ever... budget gaming since 2004 since I started to play on PC instead of PS2..

Hey, maybe then all of the 30-series will lock in at MSRP on the second hand market. A guy can dream...

Crypto mining profits are decreasing rapidly. It would hilarious if their sales were abysmal if gpu mining was so unprofitable to almost not exist. I don't expect that to happen but I enjoy the thought.

All depends on what happens. If I can get double the 6700 XT performance (3090 beating) for $500-$600 I'll upgrade again ;)

Just ordered my 6900XT and 5900X, to retire the Navi64 and Ryzen 1700 combo. I'll keep everything else unchanged. Next upgrade will be 2026 or later...

Still helluva subscription. This upgrade alone is about $45/mo in the next 5 yeats... VAT and aftermarket cooling included.

No one should be surprised by this PR, we only have to thank the scalper movement, creating a lack of availability that drove prices insane. Etailers made out like a bandit from their price gouging exploiting the situation, and lets not forget the dumbass suckers who have more money than brains.

Sounds like they're twisting the increase of GPU sold to miner to make it pass as if they were sold to people using their GPU to do what they're intended to do, like play games.

So ASP went from something like $350 to $650?
F**k that, be patient and keep the existing old VGA or if it's slower than a RX 580 just buy a Xbox Series X instead. (by 2024 probably we would have a series Z / PS5 Pro with +30-40% 6900XT performance. jk but not really )
