This Week in Gaming (Week 4)

We're already approaching the end of January and this coming week we're looking at both a new AAA title and a remake of an older AAA title that also gets a collectors edition. In other words, a lot of exciting things are happening, if you're looking at getting a new or old game with improved graphics to play.

Forspoken / This Week's AAA Title / Tuesday 24 January
Mysteriously transported from New York City, Frey Holland finds herself trapped in the breathtaking land of Athia. A magical, sentient bracelet is inexplicably wrapped around her arm, and Frey discovers the ability to cast powerful spells and use magic to traverse the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Frey nicknames her new golden companion "Cuff" and sets off to find a way home.
Land of Towers (VR) / Monday 23 January
Land of Towers is a VR adventure game for the whole family. Reality-based quests, distinctive architecture, intuitive controls, creative workshop, picturesque locations for relaxation.
Warlander / Tuesday 24 January
Harness the almighty powers of god-like Warriors, Clerics, and Mages, with a unique style that mashes a Medieval-inspired setting, Fantastical items and abilities…and…even powerful robots! Master siege weapons and cataclysmic spells to control the battlefield and destroy the enemy's core!
Handyman Corporation / Wednesday 25 January
In Handyman Corporation you become the owner of a business where you handle a variety of jobs in cleaning, maintenance, design, and construction. Accept contracts, play minigames to perform every task required. Then expand your company - buy spare parts, tools, train skills, and manage employees
Death in the Water 2 / Thursday 26 January
Dodge and carve your way through swarms of terrifying sea creatures controlled by Death, a vicious giant mind-controlling Kraken that haunts your every move. Scavenge for hidden treasure to unlock weapons, and upgrades to help you in your fight for survival. Every dive reveals a new nightmare.
Dead Space (remake) / Friday 27 January
The sci-fi survival-horror classic Dead Space returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up to offer a deeper, more immersive experience. This remake brings jaw-dropping visual fidelity, suspenseful atmospheric audio, and improvements to gameplay while staying faithful to the original game's thrilling vision.

Shame. Even more shame that it's starting to be a trend nowadays.

I loved playing the Mass Effect Trilogy for its dialogues, but every time a teammate of mine started speaking in Andromeda, it was pure cringe. From the stick-in-her-ass Cora through Vetra who wanted to sound cool but didn't, all the way to the adult child Peebee, not to mention the wooden plank Liam, or even the war veteran Drack whose only personality trait is that he's a war veteran.

Characters of old games (and films) were much better written.

I saw the ending too. It's crap. And yeah, particle light effects on everything, hard to even determine wtf is happening.

Also "the power of friendship will win overall" is pretty much the message.

This honestly want Square Enix to die already so someone else can do something with their IP's since they ran FF series to the ground (I'll see how ff16 will be before final judgement).

The constant "shit, fuck" dialogue in Flopspoken is so fricking bad.

Forspoken was 'free' with a video card I bought in May of '22. I forgot all about it until this post. I guess I'll give it a try. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll also give the Dead Space remake a try as I think I'm the only one on the planet that didn't play the original.

Big thanks to @TheLostSwede for posting these each week.

I had to look that up. When I read the description, I thought of CS Lewis and the Narnia books.

I didn't either. :p I actually bought it a few months ago on discount, but never tried it. I guess I might as well wait for the remake.

Not even the writers for Flopspoken know what it's about. Very limited review copies (and none of the PC version), engine apparently busted to the point PS5 version runs at 720p. Either way we'll know more when it unlocks tomorrow.

PC system requirements are extreme: i7-8700K + RX 6700 XT/32 GB RAM to target 1440p 30 fps

Isekai is huuge in anime at the moment, so I might try it just for that. :D

That's ridiculous. 30fps with that hardware?

That might be marketing BS. I've seen many games that ran well on PCs way below the minimum requirement.

I wouldn't be so sure in this case. Final Fantasy XV isn't known for being a well-optimized, resource-light game (in fact it leaks memory out the wazoo), so Luminous Productions' history doesn't say much for it. If I had to guess, it's going to run dodgy even on an RTX 4090 machine.

Forspoken looks kinda meh. I might grab it on sale one fine day.

I'm most interested in the Dead Space remake. I've owned the Dead Space series for ages but never got around to playing them. I will also wait for a sale on that one, too. Maybe I will even finally play the original game one of these days.

Too many games, too little time... my backlog literally spans hundreds of games so I'm in no rush to add to the pile :) .

I'm in the exact same shoes as you are. With Dead Space, and with my Steam backlog. :)

Gordon Freeman's sole personality trait was that he didn't talk.

Writer(s)
I thought the writers must be terrible after seeing the trailer and first impressions.

But actually the writing talent is quite good here. Amy Hennig (Uncharted). Gary Whitta and Todd Stashwick (Star Wars and more).

I guess they all did great stuff in the past and Amy Hennig will be out after this next flop. She did incredible stuff 10+ years ago (Uncharted 1,2, and 3), but nothing has succeeded since then.

----------

Looking forward to the Dead Space Remake and Fire Emblem Engage.

Dead Space is one of my all time favorite Horror/Shooters. The Line Gun is my favorite weapon.
