Qualcomm Unveils 10G Fiber Gateway Platform for Ultimate Connected Home Performance

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. is ushering in a new era of home connectivity, and new opportunities for service providers, with the introduction of the Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform and its signature feature, Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology.

The overwhelming majority of subscribers experience their broadband service through Wi-Fi. In today's broadband systems, the access network from the service provider to the home and Wi-Fi within the home are managed separately - with a quality of service which is nearly impossible to maintain across the entire network, given the diversity of devices, applications, connectivity technologies, and the near-constant change across all these elements.
The Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology addresses this management challenge by offering a unified data flow management architecture, from cloud to device. It delivers orchestration, classification, scheduling, and insights that help ensure subscriber performance expectations for 10G Fiber are met - adapting to user activity whether they are gaming, streaming, video conferencing or sharing content.

We are also confident that Qualcomm's Service-Defined Wi-Fi Technology will help underpin the home networking revolution through the enablement of guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) for consumers."

Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform
The Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform is architected to enable 10 Gbps to and through the home. Its software-defined architecture combines 10G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology with multi-Gigabit Wi-Fi 7 connectivity to ensure high-speed connectivity and low-latency access can be delivered seamlessly through the home to end devices - such as phones, PCs, smart TVs, home cameras or appliances.

Featuring the Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology, a groundbreaking cloud-to-device quality of service framework, the 10G Fiber Gateway Platform is designed to give providers unprecedented orchestration and insights to help improve their subscribers' quality of experience.

The Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology's application-type orchestration is built to enable providers to create a new level of user experience based on reliable and fast end-to-end connectivity. Service providers will be able to offer differentiated services optimized for applications such as gaming, streaming, and employer-supported work-from-home optimized service.

The Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform and Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology are scheduled to be commercially available by summer 2024.

What's 10G? Based on the article, it's just a fancy name for 10 Gigabit home networking. Am I right?

It's short for 10 Gbps these days it seems, nothing to do with celluar technology.

In networking we always shorten to a single letter, 10M, 100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G, 10G. So I really don't get how that's stupid and confusing. even the standards shorten it most of the time, for example 10GBase-T.

I've always called them 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, etc. "G" generally refers to mobile network standards, for example 3G, 4G or 5G, that's why it's confusing.

It's only confusing if you don't look at anything else. You wouldn't think 1G fiber means NMT or AMPS over fiber (somehow) and you wouldn't think a 5G phone has 5GBase-T.

Yet, it doesn't take any effort to make it less confusing in the first place by calling it 10 Gbps instead of 10G, which just doesn't make any sense, imo. The letter "G" usually refers to "generation", not bandwidth.

Not in the networking world. Again, we're talking 10G Fiber, in other words, we're talking about optical network cabling which has nothing to do with cellular. The standard is to call an SFP+ port a 10G SFP+ or a 25G SFP28 port in the networking world. You'll here 10GBase-T when referring to 10 Gbps Ethernet, 10GBase-T1 when you're talking automotive, 10GBase-CR when talking about direct attach copper SFP+, 10G-EPON... and 10G services is a term thrown around to kind of encapsulate all that

It may be confusing when you talk about routers. 5G could mean 5 Gbps ethernet and/or 5G WWAN or/and 5 GHz wi-fi. Luckily, 5 Gbps ethernet is basically nonexistent.

But the reason we're all so much focused on that "G" is probably that there's half an ounce of useful info buried under a ton of buzzwords in the press release.

Confusion notwithstanding, the #1 key takeaway from this mostly techno-babble PR... which as usual, it's all about da cash grabbin teleco's/ISP's getting/having yet ANUTHA excuse for jacking up your internet service bills....

And anyone who thinks that you will get this wonderful, uber-fast service for anywhere near your current pricing, then perhaps you would be interested in some prime beachfront property that I have for sale at an outstanding price** :D

Still no 10GBaseT? More integral WiFi?

At least the SoC at the heart of this might find utilitarian use, later on.

(Some of us have copper Infrastructure in place, to support 10gigabit+)

They have a different platform for that, this is for those who gets their internet via a passive optical network (PON).
Qualcomm doesn't mention if there's a 10 Gbps output or not, which is a bit strange.

At this point, I could totally see 'the industry' allowing us plebs the priveledge of 10G WAN,
before 10G LAN.
