"Metro Awakening" VR Announced During State of Play Event

Hi everyone, I'm Samar, Associate Game Director at Vertigo Games. We couldn't be more excited to reveal our next project, Metro Awakening, during today's State of Play. We're proud to say that, with the support of Deep Silver, for the last two and a half years we've been working to bring the post-apocalyptic world of Metro to PS VR2, Meta Quest 2+3 and Steam VR 2024. The best video games take us out of our world by putting us in the boots of someone else. They let us experience that world through their eyes. The Metro series continually strives to achieve this. Inspired by the internationally best-selling novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus delivered immersive first-person experiences at release. These games put players in the heart of a desperate battle for survival after nuclear Armageddon. Metro Awakening is an all-new Metro game made exclusively for VR, and powered by the immersive features of PS VR2 and its Sense controllers.

It's an origins story, set before the events of Metro 2033, that both offers a whole new angle for Metro fans, and a fantastic starting point for seasoned VR players ready to put on the gas mask. Set in 2028, the all-new story is penned by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. You play as Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife amongst the claustrophobic, irradiated metro tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow. As Serdar ventures deeper into the Metro his courage and sanity will be tested by the supernatural forces he encounters, and will set in motion the events that lead to his spiritual awakening as something else entirely…
But how does this all feel in VR?
True to the core of the series, Metro Awakening is an intense first-person adventure blending survival, stealth, and combat with a gripping story. This means you'll get to experience Metro's heart-pounding FPS gameplay in VR for the first time, fumbling for filters to protect you from radiation, panicking as you frantically charge your flickering headlamp in the dark, and reloading your arsenal by hand as you battle the many threats in the depths of the tunnels. With the addition of adaptive triggers and headset haptics on PS VR2 we were able to add tactile sensations to pulling our weapons' triggers and getting hit by bullets. It's nuances like these that push the level of immersion in VR even further on a visceral level.

We'll have a lot more on Metro Awakening before it releases later in 2024, and we're honored to bring this beloved franchise to modern VR systems for the first time.

Metro Awakening is a story-driven first person adventure built for VR that blends atmospheric exploration, stealth and combat in the most immersive Metro experience yet. Don your gas mask, brave the crippling radiation and venture into the depths of the Metro where threats haunt your every...

A pleasant surprise for the 2,24% of Steam users who own a VR headset. By going "VR Only" you exclude the absolute majority of gamers.

I guess some companies out there swim in so much money that they can just put artistic freedom over profits. Chapeau. Half Life: Alyx 2.0.

I agree. It should be illegal to make niche games, and the purest kinds of games are mobile games because those can be played by the most people.

Tbh. almost all mobile games aren't games. :shadedshu: They're "applications" filled with micro transactions & gambling mechanics, to hoover up cash from the young, naive & dumb people.

It reminds me very much like back in the days with the WAP Billing Ringtones & Games hype. Different game, same scam.

My guess is they are being highly subsidized by the VR companies and this isn’t to make money for the developers, but rather push sales for meta and alike.

The point is games should be played by as many people as possible. The more people playing, the better the game. If it can't be played on a $100 Android phone is shouldn't exist. Candy Crush is better than HL Alyx because more people can play it. And as you say, companies that has money to make games that probably won't make the money back are worse than companies that are purely cash focused.

The point is to make money and sometimes that means not everyone gets to enjoy it . Also sometimes the folks making these decisions are not interested in making a very good game but a game that takes as little effort as possible and the highest margins . That’s what business is … you really can’t look at these decisions through the eyes of every gamer.
Meta and the VR space in general is trying real hard to get more market share and they can’t do that if the average Joe can play these titles on any device they can get… it has to be a VR device . This means subsidizing some costs or promoting or contracting with these devs etc … has nothing to do with that one software dev working weekends to get this game up and running and who wants everyone to experience their work.that person does not make these decisions

I like my VR headset and I'll enjoy the game If I do purchase it. I hope they will make a screen version but this for me is fine. Maybe it might get modded in like HL:A

OTOH, you don't have to pay.

Some of them are more fun than I ever imagined - It is why my main game is D:($), aka Diablo:Immortal.
