Respawn Entertainment Reportedly Working on "Star Wars: Mandalorian" FPS Title

Job listings posted by Respawn Entertainment last summer indicated that their Star Wars Jedi: Survivor development team had moved onto an unsurprising project—the ideal candidate(s) would help: "create an incredible Star Wars experience for our players in a fun, third-person action-adventure setting." Games industry watchers believe that a third Star Wars Jedi title is in the works, given that the franchise has—so far—generated a large paying audience. Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson reckons that another Star Wars IP has been bestowed upon Electronic Art's action specialist studio—the report posits that this rumored project is in an early stage of development. Veteran developers at Respawn Entertainment have a long history of producing blockbuster first-person shooter titles, although Apex Legends signaled a slight change in course. Their deviation into third-person with 2019's Jedi: Fallen Order also surprised a segment of longtime Respawn fans.

It is possible that the Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm Games partnership has incubated a new first-person title semi-connected to a popular Star Wars television series IP—Henderson has gathered a few tidbits: "according to sources, the game will see the player take control of a Mandalorian bounty hunter (unclear who) set during the time when the Galactic Empire is dominating across the galaxy. It's your job, as a bounty hunter to capture bounties dead or alive for cash rewards." Rumor mill wires were crossed when it was claimed that a former Apex Legend director was heading up development on the unannounced "Mandalorian" project, but an Insider Gaming update reveals that the former Respawn member was involved in development of a cancelled Apex title.

Henderson shared a more detailed account of claimed story and gameplay elements: "The game's high mobility has been made possible storytelling-wise thanks to the Mandalorian's jetpack, which allows the player to perform horizontal dashing, vertical jumping, boost sliding (somewhat similar to sliding down hills in Apex Legends), and more. Sources described the game as "very fast-paced" and as such will reward players who play in this style; for example, the player's health will mainly regenerate based on successive kills. As to be expected, playing as a Mandalorian bounty hunter gives the player a wide variety of weapons and gadgets including a wrist rocket, grapple hook, a visor for tagging enemies and bounties, and more. It's understood that the game will not be an open world and have linear levels taking place on a variety of different planets in the Star Wars universe."

The inside sources propose that the game is at least "a year or two away" from completion, but it is not clear whether the team is focusing on a solely single player experience, or additionally bringing in multiplayer elements. Last month, Lucasfilm announced a big screen "The Mandalorian" adaptation—with (series veteran) Jon Favreau selected as director. He will also produce alongside: "Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024."

Ohh hey so Star Wars 1313 but without Fett? Could be cool I guess, as long as it is actually treated as a separate thing and not connected to the movies or shows, not winks to the camera or nods or whatever. "Semi-connected" is good if "Set in the Star Wars Universe, which is vast and interesting" and horrible if "OH HEY IT HAS BABY YODA IN IT AND MANDO ISN'T THIS COOL, AND LOOK WHO'S THAT, OH MY IT'S LUKE SKYWALKER, WAVE TO HIM KIDS", which is honestly what I assume it's going to be. Nuke the Skywalker cult and start over.

1313 looked promising. Too bad it was scrapped when the whole IP sale to Disney started taking place.

I've liked very little of Star Wars that Disney has put out since they took over ownership and I'm not holding my breath for this game. I don't expect it to be anything exciting. So if by some chance it turns out to be amazing, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I hate what the video gaming industry have become.
Knowing what I know and seeing what the video gaming is about... As a whole...

It is not about entertaining the customer.
It's not about getting a quality product at launch, if any at all.

It's all about... The Message...

- Agreed. Disney has managed to make Star Wars feel sooooo small compared to the EU. It really has not benefitted from Marvelization at all.

Never mind the fact that the movie trilogy was so bad that Disney seems incapable of moving the timeline forward beyond it, there is just nothing there to grab onto and take the universe forward.

Even The Mandalorian started strong in Season 1 and has slowly digressed back into the interconnected garbage Disney cannot get enough of by Season 3.

In a perfect world, this game would feature A Mandalorian, but not The Mandalorian, and be a fresh new story cut from whole cloth.

I hope this does not mean an impact of some kind on the 3rd Jedi game...

I dont even care about the game. Im just here to see how predatory the microtransactions are and how much of it that EA are going to pack it full of since star wars is obviously a big franchise. Probably not even half as big as it once was but there are still die hard fans out there.

Ah the multi-metaverse...

Where everything is connected, and you find Magic The Gathering 'Fallout' editions. Or Transformers.
And everything becomes the same soulless interchangeable junk eventually.

Whoever cooked this up must have started with a spreadsheet before becoming creative. Its horrible. It doesn't benefit anything, Marvel's 'multiverse' is beyond ridiculous at this point too.

This 'formula' needs to die a horrible death fast. The occasional step outside into another world is fine, but now its common place everywhere. And that's really the problem. The copycat behaviour knows no bounds. This idea that 'more' is better really just cannibalizes on everything.

EA also laid off over 600 people yesterday:
variety.com/2024/gaming/news/ea-layoffs-600-employees-1235925828/

They also want to develop fewer new titles:
"This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities — to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow."
www.bbc.com/news/technology-68434599

Yeah, playing it safe and going for tried and true formula sure sounds like it will help drive creativity and accelerate innovation.

FreedomEclipse@T0@st MIght be worth updating the article....
I included a link back to this Mandalorian TPU article in EA's PR piece. Not sure if it's worth updating this one, since it's all rumor mongering.

Article today this is axed.

These large publishers continue to just shrink themselves to a few established #IP's, although this cancellation doesnt bother me much personally as we already have FPS saturation.

Advice for any independent studio, dont sell yourself out to one of the big boys.

Good riddance. Ridiculous content as a movie, let alone a game

This shit is over. Much like Marvel, and all that other drivel milking us with fast food rehashed content.

This is Ubisoft climb the watchtower territory. Recognize and delete

EA probably doesnt understand this yet, they just looked at a bottom line and decided x% had to go.
