NVIDIA Developing Subpixel Reconstruction Antialiasing to Compete with MLAA

NVIDIA is developing its own antialiasing (AA) technology to rival morphological antialiasing (MLAA). The subpixel reconstruction antialiasing (SRAA) NVIDIA is currently conducting research on aims to provide better image quality with minimal performance penalty. It "combines single-pixel (1x) shading with subpixel visibility to create antialiased images without increasing the shading cost," as NVIDIA puts it in its research abstract. SRAA is suited for rendering engines that don't use multisample antialiasing (MSAA) since they use deferred shading. For such renderers, SRAA works as a post-processing layer, just like MLAA.

Where SRAA defers from MLAA is that the new algorithm can better respect geometric boundaries and has a fixed runtime independent of scene and image complexity. SRAA benefits shading-bound applications. "For example, our implementation evaluates SRAA in 1.8 ms (1280x720) to yield antialiasing quality comparable to 4-16x shading. Thus SRAA would produce a net speedup over supersampling for applications that spend 1 ms or more on shading; for comparison, most modern games spend 5-10 ms shading. We also describe simplifications that increase performance by reducing quality," claims NVIDIA.

OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, announces the latest Z-Drive R3 PCI-Express SSD solution for enterprise and OEM clients. Showcased for the first time at CES 2011, the Z-Drive R3 updates the existing lineup with greater performance, reliability, and design flexibility with a new compact footprint for server applications, and is the first SSD to officially deploy OCZ's proprietary Virtualized Controller Architecture (VCA) technology.

Creating a 'virtual super controller,' OCZ's VCA (Virtualized Controller Architecture) pools the resources of two or more NAND flash controller interfaces, MCPs, storage processors, and a physical interface complete with customizable features and interface options that eliminates the need to re-spin expensive silicon. VCA is able to address NAND flash in an innovative way through the use of a massively parallel array, eliminating bottlenecks by increasing both read and write speeds up to the theoretical interface limit while keeping access latencies to a minimum. With VCA, IT Architects can now take advantage of enterprise-rich features that are not available when utilizing traditional raid cards with an array of SSDs in their servers. With the Z-Drive R3, which makes use of VCA technology, clients can now overcome this obstacle and deploy a single solid state drive that not only delivers exceptional bandwidth but also beneficial enterprise features including TRIM, SMART monitoring, native command queuing (NCQ), tagged command queuing (TCQ), power fail management, and wear-leveling.

Scythe Announces Setsugen 2 VGA Cooler

The Japanese cooler manufacturer Scythe presents a new graphics card cooler called Setsugen 2. The successor of the popular and award-winning Setsugen 1, improving the well-known basic design and is highly compatible with current graphics cards. Four copper-heatpipes distribute heat generated by the graphics card over the entire surface of the cooler. The direct heat dissipation is achieved by a fanned arrangment of the heatpipes. Thanks to this well-balanced heat distribution, the air flow of the built-in 120 mm Slip Stream Slim fan is used with maximum efficiency despite the small dimensions of the heat sink. Low height of only 33 mm allows easy trouble-free SLI / Crossfire mode.

For the active cooling a Slip Stream 120 mm Slim fan with only 12 mm height is used, which allows a speed control range of 800 (± 20%) to 2,000 rpm (± 10%). Thus an air flow of 19.40 to 45.47 CFM / 32-76 m³/hr is generated. Fan speed is controlled by a rotary potentiometer which is easily accessible via a PCI slot bracket on the back of the PC. This allows the user to find the ideal compromise between performance and noise level (from 19.53 to 33.67 dBA) for his system.

Intel Chipset to Finally Embed a USB 3.0 Controller

Nothing in the PC platform really becomes an industry standard before Intel embraces it. Same is the case with USB 3.0, which, over an year after its entry into the industry, has seen limited market adoption and motherboard integration, driven mostly by 2-port PCI-E controllers. Internal presentation slides sourced by Heise show that the Panther Point chipset, which drives Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, embeds a 4-port XHCI compatible USB 3.0 SuperSpeed controller. The controller sits aside two EHCI USB 2.0 controllers, and shares 4 ports over a USB hub. So, out of the 14 USB ports from the chipset, 4 will be SuperSpeed capable.

Panther Point is the codename of Intel's 7-series platform controller hub (PCH) chipset, which could carry the common market model names P77 and H77. The chipsets will drive Intel's Ivy Bridge processors. Ivy Bridge is a die-shrunk Sandy Bridge, which will be fabricated using the 22 nm lithography. It will form the back bone of Intel's 3rd generation Core processors slated for release at CES 2012.

Radeon HD 6990 ''Antilles'' Graphics Card Pictured

A few days earlier, AMD's Matt Skynner displayed the company's newest graphics card that seeks to extend the performance leadership currently held by Radeon HD 5970. The dual-GPU AMD Radeon HD 6990, codenamed "Antilles", makes use of two 40 nm "Cayman" GPU, which powers the single-GPU HD 6950 and HD 6970. The core configuration of Cayman in Antilles is not known. The card itself keeps up with the product styling that all Radeon HD 6000 series carry, it's about as long as the HD 5970.

This time, AMD is toying with a revolutionary new cooler design that makes use of a cylindrical blower (like ones used in air-curtains, on a much smaller scale) to draw air from the rear portion of the cooler, and circulate through the complex vapor-chamber enhanced heatsink inside. In other words, the card lacks a fan intake hole where it's typically located, but the rear portion serves that purpose. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors. AMD is expected to release the new enthusiast graphics card in this quarter.

Sapphire Readies New Custom-Design HD 6970 2 GB Graphics Card

Sapphire is readying a new custom-design Radeon HD 6970 2 GB graphics card. The card uses a PCB that closely resembles the AMD reference-design PCB, but comes in blue color. It also uses a custom designed cooler that uses a traditional blower channeling air through a dense aluminum fin canal block. The most peculiar feature is a round rotary knob, which lets you switch between the two BIOS ROM chips on board, thereby letting you maintain two hardware-stored clock and fan profiles. This knob appears to be coin-turned. The Radeon HD 6970 packs 1536 VLIW4 stream processors, and connects to 2 GB of memory over a high-speed GDDR5 memory interface.

AMD Readies New Multi-GPU Technology for Fusion Llano APUs

After a well-received launch of the Fusion "Zacate" accelerated processing unit (APU) for nettops and entry-level PCs, AMD's higher-performance APU, codenamed "Llano", is just around the corner. Llano is intended for use on mainstream desktops, business PCs, and all-in-one PCs, it is better geared for higher-resolution, visually-intensive computing. Its competitors include Intel's Core i3 and Core i5 dual-core processors. AMD is backing up this launch with a new multi-GPU technology which is both similar and different from Hybrid CrossFireX. The similar part is that the GPU embedded in the Fusion chip will work in tandem with a discrete AMD Radeon graphics card, the difference is that it can work with any HD 6000 series graphics card, and multiply the available display connectivity.

The Fusion Llano APU will be part of AMD's Lynx mainstream desktop platform. The Llano APU embeds two x86-64 processing cores that feature the latest SIMD extensions, a DirectX 11 compliant GPU, a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller, a PCI-Express 2.0 hub, and an interconnect to the Hudson M1 chipset. The APU gives out a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 port, which is configurable using external switching. AMD also ran its own internal tests to show the performance advantage the new multi-GPU technology will give. AMD's Lynx mainstream desktop platform is expected to launch a little later this year.

Gainward Readies GeForce GTX 580 Phantom 3 GB Graphics Card

Last month, Gainward introduced its GeForce GTX 570 Phantom, which won quite some appreciation among readers for its radical design. The company decided to extend it to the GeForce GTX 580, too, since it's based on the same GF110 silicon. The only major change is that 2 Gbit memory chips are used, yielding a total memory of 3072 MB (3 GB). The memory is spread across 12 2 Gbit memory chips across a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. Clock speeds stick to NVIDIA reference: 783/1566/4020 MHz (core/CUDA cores/memory effective). The GTX 580 packs 512 CUDA cores.

The cooler makes use of a black aluminum fin array, to which heat is fed by six heat pipes. Instead of fans on its obverse side blowing air onto the PCB, there are three fans on its reverse side, drawing air from the aluminum fin array, and onto the PCB. The result is a better-looking product. Display outputs include two DVI, and one each of HDMI and DisplayPort. Gainward will release its 3 GB GTX 580 Phantom graphics card soon, at a premium over the reference design.

MSI HD 6850 Cyclone Power Edition Review

MSI HD 6850 Cyclone Power Edition Review

MSI's HD 6850 Cyclone Power Edition comes at 860 MHz, which is the largest overclock out of the box of any HD 6850 available. The card also features a little switch to enable a silent BIOS which reduces fan noise considerably and makes the card a virtually noiseless experience to use, in both idle and 3D.

AMD Slips in Radeon HD 6770 and HD 6750 for OEMs

AMD implemented its plans to rebrand Radeon HD 5700 series to HD 6700 series, by listing up Radeon HD 6770 and HD 6750 on its website. For now, it's available only to OEMs. There are no changes between the 5700 and 6700 as far as specifications go, except HDMI 1.4a support. At most, you can see a different-looking cooler shroud on the reference-design graphics cards. Other than that, they're the same. The HD 6770 is based on the 40 nm Juniper silicon, with 800 VLIW5 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory over a 128-bit wide memory interface. The HD 6750 on the other hand has 720 stream processors. There's no information at present on when (or if) AMD plans to release this to the consumer market.

EverCool Intros Transformer 3 CPU Cooler

EverCool announced its latest CPU cooler, part of its Transformer series, the Transformer 3. It features similar design and styling as the Transformer 4. As the number next to "Transformer" indicates, this cooler uses three heat-pipes compared to 4 on its bigger sibling. Measuring 130 x 161 x 78.5 mm, the heatsink weighs 630 g. The three 6 mm thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes are evenly spread along the plane of the aluminum fins, and make direct contact with the CPU at the base. A 120 mm chrome-plated fan is in charge of ventilation, it spins at speeds between 800 and 2200 RPM, is PWM-controlled, and has a rated noise output of 15~34 dBA. It is compatible with all current sockets including LGA1366, LGA1155/LGA1156, LGA775, AM3/AM2+/AM2. The company did not give out pricing.

GeForce GTX 560 Ti Reference Board Pictured

Here are the first pictures of an NVIDIA reference design GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics card. The pictures reveal quite a bit about the PCB layout and the cooling assembly. To begin with, the card is longer than the GTX 460, and uses a more refined cooler. The GF114 GPU uses a rectangular package, much like the GF104. The eight GDDR5 memory chips lie adjacent to the GPU. Power supply consists of 4-phase GPU, single-phase memory, and is drawn in by two 6-pin PCI-E power connectors. SLI is restricted to 2-way, and display outputs include two DVI and one mini-HDMI. Although the PCB is green, one can expect it to come in various colors depending on the partners' specifications.

The cooling assembly, as mentioned earlier, is much more refined compared to the previous generation. The GTX 460 cooler was not much more than a GPU heatsink with radially-projecting aluminum fins, covered by shroud. With the GTX 560 Ti, NVIDIA used a base-plate unisink, which collects heat from other components such as the memory and VRM, and conveys it to the GPU heatsink, which is much more elaborate, and uses 8 mm thick copper heatpipes to spread heat across a much larger heatsink. The design of this heatsink seems to be inspired from MSI's Cyclone cooler. Don't mind the flowery-green "sticker" that's Photoshop'd to the shroud, it's not part of the reference design. That's where partners can either demonstrate their creativity, or show off their anime fantasies.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 Ti Graphics Card Pictured

Here are the first pictures of a Gigabyte branded NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics card. Carrying the model number GV-N560OC-1GI, Gigabyte's card is based on the 40 nanometer GF114 GPU, featuring 384 CUDA cores, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory. The card itself doesn't look much different from some of Gigabyte's GTX 460 graphics cards. This can be attributed to the rumor that GF114 is pin-compatible with GF104, to minimize R&D costs partners have to incur. They would probably just have to use the new GPU and its appropriate BIOS.

Being an "OC" marked model, Gigabyte's card could feature factory-overclocked speeds. Taking this and the GPU itself into account, Gigabyte claims its GTX 560 Ti card to be competitive with Radeon HD 6950. The card uses Gigabyte's Ultra Durable VGA construction which combines a copper-rich PCB with high-quality components, and is cooled by the company's in-house design WindForce2X GPU cooler that uses a large aluminum fin heatsink using two fans.

Update (01/18): Gigabyte commented on this article. The company outright denied to have anything to do with whatever is in those pictures, and alleged it to be some kind of a "malicious attack" on it. In a statement, it said: "the information is false and the data is simulated from our old card. The picture is incorrect and was obviously photoshopped from our previous GTX460 model. The GTX560 card looks nothing like pictured on the article. We have good reason to believe this is a malicious attack."

Socket Pin Burnout Returns to Haunt LGA1155?

Last year, credible reports of a design defect with LGA1156 sockets made by a certain component manufacturer in particular, made headlines. Reviewers found that extreme overclocking using increase voltages, in test cases, caused certain pins of the socket to burn out, damaging both the board and processor. The defect was found to be caused by shorting between the pins and the socket causing tiny electrical arcs. Motherboard reviewer from TechReaction.net discovered that his Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4 and GA-P67A-UD7 samples showed signs of socket burn. The publication is yet to receive a reply from the board manufacturer.

LGA1155 and LGA1156 are very similar in physical pin layout, chip package, and retention clips, although the pin-maps are significantly different. TechReaction comments that while only "extreme conditions" cause such pin burnouts, 24/7-stable overclocked settings could, over a period of time, create similar conditions. Only time, and extensive testing will reveal if burnouts are a cause for concern to enthusiasts.

Head-Direct Displays New HiFiman Headphones, Prototypes

Head-Direct had a lot with them to this years CES. On the in-ears side they had the RE-242s which is a brand new design that uses a 6 mm dynamic driver instead of the 10 mm driver in the RE-252s and RE-262s. The little new comer will be priced very reasonable according to the owner of Head-Direct and they sounded quite good at the show despite the fact that the booth across the aisle was demonstrating power tools. The RE-242s real force is that they are very small and thus you will be able to get a good fit with them almost no matter how odd the exterior part of your ear is shaped.

Another interesting newcomer at CES for Head-Direct was the HE-6P headphones, which are basically a more efficient version of the HE-6 headphones. The HE-6Ps can be run straight out of a normal portable device to OK results, tried it briefly with the iPhone 4 and was able to get the amount of volume needed. On the HM-801 with the new power module from Head-Direct the performance was better, albeit the listening situation was less than ideal the HE-6Ps will surely be a headphone to watch. Also on display was a balanced amplifier card for the HM-801 which was a prototype, unfortunately we did not get to listen to it.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 580 AMP! Edition 1536 MB Review

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 580 AMP! Edition 1536 MB Review

Sleek-Audio Shows off Platinum Circumaural and SA7 In-Ear Headphones

Sleek-Audio announced their brand new circumaural headphones dubbed Platinum by 50 Cent. These headphones have integrated Kleer wireless system, and can be used with a regular cable as well. The prototype at CES 2011 was not functional, but the designed looked great. Sleek-Audio seems commited to use carbon fiber on all their high end models which looks quite good.

Sleek-Audio also debuted the all new SA7 dual armature in-ears which to these ears sounded good but slightly sibilant with the treble plus tip, unfortunately we never got to listen to them with the normal treble tip which we suspect would cure this completely. The SA7s feature an aluminum housing and the side covers are made from carbon fiber. Sound tuning wise these use the same system as the SA1s which means that the treble port screws on to the housing. Cable wise Sleek are still going for what looks to be the cable from the original SA6s even though this has gathered a lot of critique only for being too fragile.

Westone Shows off New Westone 4 In-Ear Headphones

Westone showed off their new Westone 4 in-ears at CES 2011. The Westone 4s has the exact same exterior dimensions as the Westone 3s but a completely different package inside. The 4-series in-ears uses an all new three way crossover designed by Westone. Like the name suggests the Westone 4s carry four balanced armatures, dual lows, single mid and high drivers. The sound of these new in-ears from Westone is somewhat like that of the Westone 3s but with a slightly more forward midrange and a little more highs as well.

The slight sibilance issue with the Westone 3s plus normal single flange tips seemed to be cured which is great because that really limited your tip selection for the 3s if you wanted optimum sound quality. Due to the tricky listening conditions at CES you will have to wait for our full review for further comments. Westone will begin shipping the Westone 4s shortly and they will come at a hefty price tag of $449.

Bulldozer 50% Faster than Core i7 and Phenom II

Here, take some salt. AMD reportedly gave out performance figures in a presentation to its partners, performance figures seen by DonanimHaber. It is reported that an 8-core processor based on the "Bulldozer" high-performance CPU architecture is pitched by its makers to have 50% higher performance than existing processors such as the Core i7 950 (4 cores, 8 threads), and Phenom II X6 1100T (6 cores). Very little is known about the processor, including at what clock speed the processor was running at, much less what other components were driving the test machine.

Taking this information into account, the said Bulldozer based processor should synthetically even outperform Core i7 980X six-core, Intel's fastest desktop processor in the market. Built from ground-up, the Bulldozer architecture focuses on greater inter-core communication and reconfigured ALU/FPU to achieve higher instructions per clock cycle (IPC) compared to the previous generation K10.5, on which its current Phenom II series processors are based. The processor is backed by new 9-series core logic, and a new AM3+ socket. AMD is expected to unveil this platform a little later this year.

GeForce GTX 560 called GTX 560 Ti and releases Jan 25th

About a decade ago when programmable shaders were new, NVIDIA identified its first graphics processors that used them under the GeForce 3 series and 4 series with the "Ti" marker (for example, GeForce 4 Ti 4800), to demarcate them from mainstream "MX" series, which lacked them (eg. GeForce 4 MX 440). Exactly a decade later, there are faint indications that NVIDIA is reintroducing the Ti marker. This was found out on close examination of a leaked 266.44 GeForce driver, which recognized an unreleased NVIDIA GPU as GeForce GTX 560 Ti. This baffles us. To begin with, this doesn't seem like a notebook GPU, second, we don't know of anything big in works at NVIDIA. One plausible explanation we can come up with is that NVIDIA is using "Ti" to simply make its GTX 560 SKU "look" presentable on paper, especially since the SKU may face competition from Radeon HD 6950 1 GB the moment it's released.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti is being introduced to restore competitiveness to NVIDIA in the sub-$270 "performance" segment, after it was depleted by AMD's introduction of the Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850. With GTX 560 seeming imminent, AMD is preparing two new SKUs, Radeon HD 6950 1GB and HD 6970 1GB, which, coupled with cost-effective board designs, are expected to significantly drive down prices, restoring AMD's competitiveness in the crucial market segment. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti is based on new GF114 silicon, features 384 CUDA, a 256-bit GDDR5 memory interface, and core clock speeds of 820 MHz. The new SKU is slated for January 25th.

ASUS Readies Another Monster: GeForce GTX 580 DirectCu II

After showing off a monstrous DirectCu II cooled Radeon HD 6970 at CES, ASUS released pictures of another card which probably couldn't make it to Vegas. The GeForce GTX 580 DirectCu II from ASUS is just as beastly as its Radeon cousin. It uses a completely in-house design, with custom PCB that uses a strong VRM; and a triple-slot cooler which uses copper heatpipes that make direct contact with the GPU. The PCB uses an 8-phase GPU and 2-phase memory VRM. Whereas the reference design draws all memory power from the slot, the ASUS version has shifted one memory phase to external for improved overclocking. The VRM makes use of high-grade components, including an NEC-made proadlizer to condition power for the GPU.

The DirectCu II cooler uses a large aluminum fin array to which heat is conveyed by five heatpipes that make direct contact with the GPU. Two 100 mm fans are in charge of ventilation. The rear panel consists of two DVI, and one each of DisplayPort and HDMI. The card is bound to have factory overclocked speeds, with room for more overclocking. The cooler, though large and with two fans, is tested by the company to be quieter than NVIDIA's reference design cooler. The GeForce GTX 580 is NVIDIA's flagship DirectX 11 GPU. It packs 512 CUDA cores, and connects to 1536 MB of memory over a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface.

Bulldozer-Ready AMD 990FX Based MSI Big Bang Conqueror Motherboard Pictured

MSI let its latest motherboard for the AMD Zambezi platform face the lens. The Big Bang Conqueror is based on the AMD 990FX chipset, and features the latest AM3+ socket to connect to processors based on AMD's Bulldozer architecture. The first set of processors will feature 8 cores, 16 MB cache, and dual-channel DDR3 memory with default DRAM speeds to match bandwidth provided by slower triple-channel DDR3 memory on current Intel Core i7 LGA1366 processors.

The Big Bang Conqueror uses a 10-phase VRM to power the CPU. The CPU is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots for dual-channel memory. Expansion slots include three PCI-E 2.0 x16 (electrical x16/16/NC or x16/x8/x8), one PCI-E x16 (electrical x4), two PCI-E x1, and a PCI. Storage includes six internal SATA 6 Gb/s, two eSATA. Other connectivity includes USB 3.0, gigabit Ethernet, 8-channel audio with optical and coaxial SPDIF, and FireWire. Various overclocker-friendly features are also present.

Cheaper 1 GB Radeon HD 6950 and HD 6970 Coming Soon

While it may not have toppled NVIDIA's fastest single-GPU graphics card, AMD's Radeon HD 6900 series sure stepped up competition in the high-end segment, with Radeon HD 6970 competing with GeForce GTX 570, and the HD 6950, which can be unlocked to the HD 6970, having a class of its own. To further increase competitiveness, and probably to ward off the GeForce GTX 560 threat, AMD is reportedly directing partners to add 1 GB variants of the HD 6950 and HD 6970.

Currently 2 GB of GDDR5 memory is standard for both SKUs. With half the memory and cost-effective choice of PCB and components, AMD partners can significantly reduce prices at the expense of some performance, but end up with equal or better price-performance ratios to GTX 570 and the upcoming GTX 560. The two new SKUs will be available soon. Pictured below is a Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2 GB. Sapphire is said to be one of the first with HD 6900 1 GB series.

Intel LGA2011 Socket, X68 Express Chipset Pictured

Here are the first pictures of Intel's new high-end CPU socket, the 2011-pin land grid array (LGA2011). A selection of pictures of an unannounced motherboard by MSI made it to the internet. LGA2011, coupled with a new chipset, the Intel X68 Express, will drive the company's new high-end and enthusiast-grade processors that feature 6, 8, or 12 cores, and quad-channel DDR3 memory controllers. At first sight, the LGA2011 is huge! Its retention clip looks to be completely detachable by unhooking the retention bars on either sides. With all LGA sockets till date, you needed to unhook one retention bar, letting you open the retention clip along a hinge.

Since the processor has four DDR3 memory channels, there's room for only one DIMM per channel on a typically-sized ATX motherboard. On this particular motherboard, we can make out that there are two DIMM slots on either sides of the socket, accommodating two channels each. With this platform, Intel transferred the northbridge component completely to the CPU package, much like LGA1156/LGA1155. Therefore, the 32-lane PCI-Express controller is housed inside the CPU package. What remains of the chipset is a PCH (platform controller hub). Like P55/H55/P67/H67, the X68 is a PCH, a glorified southbridge. It will house a smaller PCI-E hub that handles various connectivity devices, a storage controller, a LPCIO controller, USB and HDA controllers, and the DMI link to the processor. We will get to know more about this platform as the year progresses.

ASUS Combines Killer NIC and Xonar Audio into Single Addon Card

It seems like Bigfoot Killer, the family hardware-accelerated latency-chopping network controllers is really taking off after garnering interest from the motherboard industry. First, it was MSI announcing a strategic partnership with Bigfoot to bundle NICs using Killer 2100 and the probability of integrating it onto its motherboards, then Gigabyte beating MSI to that by unveiling not one, but three LGA1366 motherboards under the G1.Killer series with integrated Killer controllers, that leaves us with ASUS.

ASUS' first encounter with the Killer NIC is in the form of a multifunction addon card called ASUS ThunderBolt. Multifunction addon cards aren't new to ASUS. Recently, it released U3S6, a card that integrates USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s controllers with two ports of each kind. The ThunderBolt, on the other hand, integrates Bigfoot Killer 2100 network controller and ASUS Xonar sound. So in one package, it gives gamers access to a more responsive network and clearer audio.

EVGA Readies Analog CPU Speed Meter

EVGA is known for several of its wacky accessories for overclockers using its motherboards. It's living up to its reputation with its latest one: an analog CPU clock-speed meter. By the looks of it, the device fits onto the case with its dial facing the user, latched onto the case using the side-panel screw. It connects to the system probably over the EVBot interface. Another possibility is that the device connects to the motherboard over USB (front-panel) headers. The meter's dial uses a GHz scale with starting unit at 1 GHz, going up to 6 GHz, with no distinct divisions between. So there it is, another means for you to show some momentary love to EVGA.

Cooler Master Displays H-B6 Performance CPU Cooler

Cooler Master displayed its next performance CPU cooler, the H-B6. It features an aluminum fin tower design, but with its heat-pipes passing along the length of the fins rather than breadth (like on most tower-type heatsinks). This approach spreads heat more evenly, and adds to the turbulence. The heatsink measures 136 x 127 x 163 mm; the fan is a typically-sized 120 mm spinner with S-shaped blades. All modern CPU sockets are supported, including LGA1366, LGA1155/LGA1156, LGA775, AM3/AM2+/AM3.

EVGA P67 Micro-ATX Motherboard Pictured

Joining the ranks of the mighty P67 Classified and P67 SLI is EVGA's third socket LGA1155 motherboard, the P67 Micro (120-SB-E672). Based on the P67 chipset, this board provides all the features of the chipset, and also provides 2-way SLI support. The CPU socket is powered by a 4+2 phase VRM, wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots for dual-channel memory. Expansion slots include two PCI-E 2.0 x16 (both electrical x8 at all times), and two PCI-E x1.

There are two SATA 6 Gb/s, four SATA 3 Gb/s, two eSATA 3 Gb/s ports. 8-channel HD audio with optical and coaxial SPDIF outputs, two USB 3.0 ports, a number of USB 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, and Firewire make for the rest of the connectivity. Basic overclocker-friendly features include power, reset, and clear CMOS buttons on board, along with a POST diagnostic LED display. EVGA should add this motherboard to its ranks soon.

PowerColor Readies Entry-Level AMD Brazos Mini-ITX Motherboard

PowerColor is ready with its mini-ITX motherboard based on the AMD "Brazos" platform. The unnamed motherboard that is yet to get its heatsink(s) on, uses an AMD Fusion "Zacate" E-350 APU that embeds a dual-core x86-64 processor clocked at 1.60 GHz, and an AMD Radeon HD 6310 DirectX 11 compliant GPU. The APU is wired to two DDR3 SODIMM slots (notebook memory). Power is drawn in from a standard 24-pin ATX connector. The lone expansion slot is a PCI-Express 2.0 x4 with an open-end (to let you fit x16 graphics cards).

ASUS Shows Off Humongous Radeon HD 6970 DirectCu II Graphics Card

ASUS displayed a huge new graphics card based on the AMD Radeon HD 6970 GPU. The EAH6970 DirectCu is perhaps the largest among the company's graphics cards that use a "direct-copper" GPU cooler in which heat pipes make direct contact with the GPU die. Such is the size of the cooler, that the card requires three expansion slots in your system. To make optimal use of the expansion brackets, ASUS wired out all TMDS links from the GPU, yielding a display connectivity consisting of two DVI and four full-sized DisplayPort 1.2 connectors.

The GPU cooler makes use of a large aluminum fin array which uses at least three 8 mm thick copper heat pipes. The aluminum fins are cooled by the airflow of two 120 mm fans. The card uses 2 GB of high-speed GDDR5 memory over a 256-bit wide memory interface, it packs 1536 VLIW4 stream processors. The card also seems to be using a 9-phase VRM that allows software voltage control. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors.

ASUS Unveils First Micro-ATX AMD ''Brazos'' Fusion E-350 Motherboard

At a time when everyone including ASUS is cramming the AMD Fusion E-350 APU into netbooks and mini-ITX motherboards to get rid of Atom; the motherboard major saw "bigger" prospects for the E-350, and designed a micro-ATX motherboard based on it. The E35M1-M Pro from ASUS uses AMD Fusion E-350 APU that embeds a dual-core x86-64 processor based on the "Bobcat" architecture with an AMD Radeon HD 6310 DirectX 11 compliant GPU. The processor is backed by the brand new Hudson M1 single-package chipset. The E35M1-M Pro is intended for everything from office PCs to home PCs, and HTPCs. It draws power from conventional 24-pin ATX and 4-pin CPU power connectors, and uses a 3+1 phase VRM.

The CPU and chipset share a heatsink. The CPU is wired to two DDR3 DIMM slots. Expansion slots include one PCI-Express 2.0 x16, one PCI-E x1, and two PCI slots. Storage expansion includes five internal SATA 6 Gb/s and one eSATA 6 Gb/s. Connectivity includes 6-channel HD audio with optical SPDIF output, 7.1 channel audio over HDMI, gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, FireWire, and a number of USB 2.0 ports. ASUS added a bunch of exclusive features that can let you squeeze out the most performance, and manage power consumption.

EVGA Displays Non-Reference Dual-GPU and GTX 570 Graphics Cards

Graphics card vendors seldom display their products based on unannounced GPUs in trade shows, unlike motherboard vendors. That said, a certain new graphics card by EVGA is making waves at CES 2011. The double-slot, long graphics card presumably uses two GF110 GPUs to make a SLI on a stick solution. There are two possibilities about the configuration of the two GPUs looking at the eight 1 Gbit memory chips (four per GPU area) on the reverse side of the card: First being 1 GB per GPU over 256-bit memory interface; and second being 12 memory chips on the other side, amounting for 1280 MB per GPU memory over 320-bit memory interface for a core config identical to that of the GeForce GTX 570.

EVGA treaded carefully as to project the card as one of its own design, which does not conform to any future unannounced NVIDIA dual-GPU SKU. For this reason, EVGA designed its own triple-fan cooler which has fans nested inside the shroud, using a large aluminum heatsink. EVGA used the same styling on a smaller graphics card with two fans. The smaller card is EVGA's non-reference design GeForce GTX 570. It uses a more compact PCB than that of NVIDIA, and provides better display connectivity in the form of full-size HDMI and DP, alongside two DVI connectors.

The SSD uses the latest SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and is available in capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB, and 240 GB. Wildfire could use any of the many SATA 6 Gb/s compliant SSD controllers out there, the most notable being SandForce SF-2582 and Marvell 9174, to provide transfer speeds in excess of 500 MB/s.

OCZ Displays Optical HSDL Based IBIS XL Enterprise SSD

OCZ Technology also displayed its second generation Optical HSDL (high-speed data link) interface, and its first enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) that uses it. Last year, OCZ introduced HSDL as a replacement drive interface to SATA and SAS, to mainly serve the purpose of overcoming bandwidth bottlenecks. The first generation HSDL used an electronic link to the host card. The optical HSDL uses a fiber-optic cable to transfer data between the host and the drive.

The new interface is said to provide gains in access times, IOPS, and bandwidth in general. Fiber-optic cable also allows for better cable management (since it's thinner and round compared to serial cables (such as SATA, SAS), it probably also allows the cables to be longer, to help connecting a number of drives in a rack with the drive cage being at a distance from the host machine. Internally, the IBIS XL 3.5-inch form-factor SSD is a RAID 0 on a stick of two SSD sub-units. It can store up to 4 TB of data, and provide transfer speeds of 1800 MB/s (read) and 1700 MB/s (write), with 200,000 IOPS 4K write performance.

OCZ Vertex 3 EX Series SSD Pictured, 2X Performance Over Previous Generation

OCZ's first SSDs based on the latest SandForce SF-2000 series controllers have taken shape. The Vertex 3 EX is one of the first of this kind by the company. The Vertex 3 EX is driven by SandForce SF-2582 controller. It comes in the 2.5-inch form-factor, and uses SATA 6 Gb/s interface. Available in various capacities between 64 GB and 512 GB (usable 50 GB to 400 GB), the SF-2582 churns out transfer speeds of 550 MB/s (read) and 525 MB/s (write), double that of SF-1200 driven SSDs. The drive also provides a staggering 80,000 IOPS in 4K random write. A power-loss data protection system mechanism protects the drives from loss of data in event of power failure when data is being written.

Super Talent Readies SandForce-Driven USB 3.0 Flash Drive

Super Talent is readying a new ultra high-performance "flash drive". In principle, it's a SandForce-driven SSD on a stick. The device consists of a SandForce SF-1222 SSD processor with MLC NAND flash chips occupying eight channels; the SF-1222 is connected to a SATA 3 Gb/s to USB 3.0 host bridge chip. While there have been such devices in the past, this is the first time anyone has put the SandForce controller into a device this compact.

Since the SF-1222 is operating with half its channels occupied, the performance is about half as well. A quick run of CrystalDiskMark yields about 143.3 MB/s sequential read and 63 MB/s writes.

Zalman's CPU Cooler Pack Led by CNPS11X Extreme

Zalman's pack of new CPU coolers is led by the CNPS11X Extreme. The 11K is positioned to be a premium air-cooler that's a notch above even the CNPS10X. Overall retaining the trapezoid shape of the CNPS7X, the CNPS11X Extreme actually uses what appears to be L-shaped (right-angled) aluminum fins packed into a very dense fin array. It is cooled by a high-flow 130 mm LED-lit fan. It is capable of handling thermal loads of up to 350W, supporting all modern socket types, including AM3(+)/AM2(+), LGA1366, LGA1155/LGA1156.

The CNPS7X is suited for all modern socket types, including AM3+/AM3/AM2+, LGA1366, LGA1155/LGA1156, and LGA775.

Gigabyte Readies New Motherboard Line for Overclockers

Gigabyte is readying a new line of motherboards geared for extreme overclocking - well, there already are such motherboards in its ranks, but apparently not very "boutique" so to speak, or optimized for heavy LN2 coolers. In comes the new unnamed motherboard series that sports the "OC Orange" color scheme. Gigabyte is designing these motherboards in collaboration with renowned overclocker "hicookie".

The socket LGA1366 motherboard shown in its CGI form is said to be devoid of all features that overclockers won't need. It sticks to just the essentials as far as connectivity goes, but makes up for it with every feature that will help overclockers make, break, and chase world records. The board is loaded with heatsinks to cool all critical components. It probably uses digital PWM and/or high-C capacitors to keep the CPU socket area as less-crowded as possible (for heavy LN2 pots). Expansion includes four PCI-E 2.0 x16 for 4-way SLI and CrossFireX.

Corsair Displays Performance 3 Series SSDs

Corsair showed off the first of its Performance 3 series solid-state drives (SSDs). The drives come in the 2.5" form-factor, and use the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The drives are said to use a powerful processor made by Marvell, to achieve speeds in the SATA 6 Gb/s domain. Drives in the series are marked as "P3-X" (X= installed flash capacity in GB). The Performance 3 series will be part of Corsair's high-end SSD offer for 2011 and beyond.

Gigabyte G1.Sniper Strikes Middle-Ground in G1.Killer LGA1366 Series

The third in the G1-Killer series of motherboards by Gigabyte to woo the high-end gamer after G1.Guerrilla and G1.Assassin is the G1.Sniper, an LGA1366 motherboard in the ATX form-factor, based on the Intel X58+ICH10R chipset. The G1.Sniper strikes a middle-ground between the relatively-slim G1.Guerrilla, and the fully/over-loaded G1.Assassin. It packs Creative SB X-Fi CA20K2 hardware audio processor with dedicated memory that the G1.Assassin has; but can accommodate up to three graphics cards for 3-way multi-GPU only. It retains the 8+2 phase VRM of the Guerrilla, and is hence still leaning towards being a force-multiplier for gamers than for overclockers. Rest of the feature set is identical to the Guerrilla. You'll either love or loathe the green+black color scheme and the heatsink that looks like an ammo-clip.

Spire Announces the Gemini CPU Cooler

Spire Corp officially introduced their new high-end tower cpu cooler today. Gemini is the Zodiac sign for the twins. We have codenamed our newest high-end thermal solution due to the two towering dimpled fin heat-sinks. Gemini is the ultimate evolution of the hugely successful TherMax cpu cooler series. The increased number of heat-pipes combined with a higher number and density of dimpled fins and crowned with two high airflow fans for extreme cooling performance. Six U-shaped 6mm heat-pipes are in contact through the solid copper base with the CPU, rapid heat transfer to the 52 aluminum dimpled fins providing a larger surface area for optimum heat dissipation.

The Gemini is supplied with two 12cm balanced DC fans providing high airflow. There are three versions of the Gemini, this because of different noise level requirements from users. One demands better cooling and cares less for noise, others want to build a silent system. The only difference is in the fan type. Part# SP986B1-V2 comes without PWM and PCI fan speed controller. Part# SP986B1-V2-P comes with PWM (4pin) controlled fans and the third version, part# SP986B1-V2-2P comes with PWM & PCI fan speed controller included. Compatibility is guaranteed with multi-platform mounting for all current Intel and AMD micro-processors. The Gemini is pure cooling power that takes performance to the level. Spire - Powered by Innovation.

Gigabyte G1.Assassin G1-Killer Series LGA1366 Motherboard Towers High in XL-ATX

The second motherboard part of Gigabyte's G1-Killer series apart from the recently detailed G1.Guerrilla is the G1.Assassin. Also an LGA1366 motherboard based on the Intel X58 + ICH10R chipset, the G1.Assassin ropes overclockers into the equation. While the Guerrilla has more in for gamers (and support for up to 3 graphics cards in multi-GPU), the Assassin boasts of a strong CPU VRM, an arsenal of overclocker-friendly features, support for up to four graphics cards in 4-way SLI/CrossFireX, while retaining the gamer-appeal. Unlike Guerrilla, Assassin is an XL-ATX motherboard, retaining the same green+black color scheme.

It features the same 16-phase CPU VRM configuration found on the X58A-UD7 (rev 2.0). The four PCI-Express x16 slots are connected directly to the X58 northbridge, apart from one PCI-E x1 and a PCI. USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s are standard features here, too. Like the Guerrilla, it features Bigfoot Killer 2100 hardware NIC. The audio, however, is different. While Guerrilla merely uses an HD audio CODEC backed by X-Fi MB software, Assassin uses an actual CA20K2 processor that can perform hardware mixing over OpenAL in Windows 7 and Vista. The audio processor has its own 64 MB of memory, and the Killer NIC reportedly having 1 GB of DDR2 dedicated memory. A rich array of electrolytic capacitors gives the audio a more natural tone. The Assassin is also expected to have overclocking capabilities on par with the X58A-UD7/UD9 leviathans.

Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla G1-Killer Series LGA1366 Motherboard Pictured, Detailed

Gigabyte's elusive LGA1366 motherboard part of the company's G1-Killer series of motherboards targeting gamers has finally seen the lens. The socket LGA1366 motherboard by Gigabyte is based on the Intel X58 + ICH10R chipset, and is given the brand name G1.Guerrilla. To quickly run you through its styling, "Guerrilla" strikes a chord with a very "jungle warfare" color-scheme, which is black+green. This seems to be the case with the G1.Guerrilla, which goes close to looking like an NVIDIA desktop board.

The CPU is powered by an 8+2 phase VRM, wired to six DDR3 DIMM slots for triple-channel memory; the northbridge heatsink looks like a modular rifle barrel, and the southbridge heatsink like a 5.56 mm magazine. There are three PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots lending 3-way SLI and CrossFireX support, the usual two-port USB 3.0 + SATA 6 Gb/s duet, but a handful of interesting gamer-specific devices, such as the Killer 2100 hardware NIC, an HD audio CODEC that uses X-Fi MB software but high-grade electrolytic capacitors. The motherboard is out and out a gamers' motherboard. Gigabyte already has motherboards for overclockers which don't look very boutique but do the job, under its existing X58A UD5, UD7, and UD9 models.
