Samsung Expands its 'Green Memory' Initiative

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has expanded its 'Green Memory' initiative going beyond DRAM and solid state drives (SSDs) to include several memory products for PC and mobile application areas. At the seventh annual Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum being held here today, Samsung announced that its 'Green Memory' initiative will now include Samsung LPDDR2 and GDDR5 green memory as well as its GreenDDR3 and Green SSDs.

Stepping up its efforts to increase worldwide interest in Green IT products and eco-friendly solutions, a new website has been launched to promote the expanded initiative to OEM customers and consumers. It provides detailed information on Samsung's green product strategies and green-focused partners, for all three market areas, as well as industry-wide green IT trends.

NVIDIA Slips in GeForce GT 420 Desktop Graphics Card

Without making any public announcement (because it's not meant for retail sale), NVIDIA listed its GeForce GT 420 graphics card. This product is available to OEMs only. The GT 420 is derived from the Fermi architecture, and is fully compliant with the latest PC graphics technologies, including DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4. NVIDIA's reference design is low-profile and single-slot, it draws all its power from the PCI-Express slot.

Under the hood is a 40 nm graphics core (perhaps GF108), it has 48 CUDA cores, and connects to 2 GB of memory across a 128-bit wide DDR3 memory interface, with 28.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The core is clocked at 700 MHz, CUDA cores at 1400 MHz, and memory at 900 MHz (1800 MHz effective). Display outputs include DVI, HDMI (full-size), and a detachable D-Sub connector. The card has a maximum power draw of 50W. Later down the line, one can expect NVIDIA to make a consumer GeForce SKU with the same specifications.

Acer Intros Aspire One D255 Happy Netbook

Acer rolled a new variant of its recently released Aspire One D255 netbook called "Happy". The D255 Happy features a pleasant looking white and olive-green color scheme on its body. Other than this, it's the same exact on the inside as the Aspire One D255. The netbook makes use of Intel's new Atom N550 dual-core processor, has a 10.1" 1024x600 display, 1 GB of DDR3 memory, integrated GMA 3150 graphics, 250 GB HDD. Connectivity includes 10/100 Ethernet, and WiFi b/g/n. Other features include a 4-in-1 memory card reader, webcam, a multigesture touchpad, and a 6-cell, 8-hour battery. There is no word on the pricing, but we don't see why it shouldn't carry the same price as the other D255s, that's $399.

Samsung Unveils First 16GB ‘Very Low Profile’ Module in IBM’s Newest Blade Server

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it will demonstrate for the first time a 16-Gigabyte (GB), very low profile (VLP) memory module at the VM World 2010 in an IBM H22V blade server, running on Intel Xeon 5600-series processors.

Based on 4-gigabit (Gb), 40 nanometer (nm)-class DDR3, the new modules use 18 4Gb dual-die packaged (DDP) chips, and operate on 1.35 volts of electrical current. The 16GB 40nm-class DDR3 memory provides a powerful green solution, consuming 70 percent less power than four 4GB DDR3 modules and over 40 percent less than two 8GB modules, in setting a new "standard" for lower power consumption in servers. The module's very low profile (18.75 mm high) allows it to be used in extremely compact blade servers.

EVGA Intros Affordable X58 SLI3 Motherboard

EVGA released its newest socket LGA1366 motherboard, the EVGA X58 SLI3 (model: 131-GT-E767-TR). This model completes EVGA's lineup of new LGA1366 motherboards that pack USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s support, other models include the EVGA X58 FTW3 and EVGA X58 Classified3. Among the three, the X58 SLI3 is the most affordable, and targets a sub-$200 price point. The model and its overall design are derived from the X58 SLI, but with 2-port USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s controllers.

The LGA1366 socket is powered by a 6-phase VRM, it's wired to six DDR3 DIMM slots for triple-channel memory support. The motherboard supports all released Intel Core i7 LGA1366 processors, including the six-core models, out of the box. Expansion slots include one PCI-Express 2.0 x16, two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (electrical x8), two PCI-E x1, and one PCI. 2-way and 3-way SLI are supported. Apart from the six SATA 3 Gb/s ports from the ICH10R southbridge, there are two SATA 6 Gb/s ports (color coded red). Connectivity includes 8-channel HD audio, gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 and a number of USB 2.0 ports. The EVGA X58 SLI3 is listed on the company's store, at US $199.99.

Commodore USA Resurrecting C64 Using Modern ULPC Hardware

Commodore USA, has decided to pay its tributes to the iconic Commodore64 computer system, and is designing a modern PC using the same exact name (and reportedly the same design). This comes at a time when the ULPC industry is booming with netbooks, nettops, and ULV barebones manufacturers experiencing good sales. The new Commodore64 is built using the NVIDIA ION2 technology, making use of an Intel Atom D525 1.80 GHz dual-core processor, NVIDIA ION2 GPU, 4 GB of DDR3 memory, 1 TB of storage, a Blu-ray disc drive, 6-in-1 memory card reader, and connectivity that includes Bluetooth, WiFi b/g/n, and gigabit Ethernet, with display outputs that include DVI and HDMI. ASUS Intros Eee PC 1015PEM, Powered by Atom N550

ASUS released its first netbook based on the Intel Atom N550 dual-core processor, the Eee PC 1015PEM. Available in red, pink, white, and black, the 1015PEM is a 10" netbook with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. The 1.5 GHz dual-core processor that features HyperThreading is aided by 2 GB of DDR3 memory, and Intel GMA 3150 graphics. Connectivity includes 10/100 Ethernet and WiFi b/g/n. Intel Corporation announced today that a dozen of new netbooks based on its new mobile dual-core Intel Atom processors are available in stores today. The netbooks - available now and through the end of the year from manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba - enable new levels of support for applications like games, as well as Adobe Flash technology for access to a number of Web pages including online hotel booking systems and multimedia sites such as YouTube and Hulu.

Intel Atom Processors Further Expand to Storage Appliances for Homes, Small Busineses

Backed by industry support of the Intel Atom processor optimized for networked storage appliances for the home and small business, Intel Corporation has added two new Intel Atom processors to further boost the company's focus on the platform.

Since Intel's initial foray in this area in March, leading storage manufacturers, including Acer, Cisco, LaCie, LG Electronics, NETGEAR, QNAP, Super Micro, Synology and Thecus have announced products based on the energy-efficient Intel Atom processor platform.

NVIDIA's New Entry-Level GF108 GPU Pictured

Barely a day after the first pictures emerged of NVIDIA's GF106 GPU that will serve as the foundation of various mainstream SKUs, its even smaller sibling, the GF108, has come to light. Available to NVIDIA partners as qualification sample, the GF108 is a small GPU in terms of package size. The die measures around 127 mm², which is about 23% bigger than that of AMD's entry-level Redwood GPU which makes various ATI Radeon HD 5500/5600 series SKUs.

On the engineering sample card it's pictured on, the GPU has a plastic supportive-brace, and is neighboured by four Hynix-made DDR3 memory chips. No SKUs have yet been named that are based on this GPU, though it is expected that a certain SKU based on this will be comparable to the GeForce GT 240 in terms of performance, and compete with AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5500/5600 series.

The 14" CR410, the newest addition to MSI's new Classic series of notebook computers, is designed and crafted with MSI's craftsmanship. Gigabyte Intros GA-D425TUD Mini-ITX Motherboard

Gigabyte is designing a new mini-ITX motherboard that's modeled almost entirely around the GA-D525TUD, albeit with the single-core Intel Atom D425 "Pineview-D" processor, called the GA-D425TUD. The Atom D425 is a single-core chip with two logical CPUs enabled by HyperThreading technology, which has an integrated memory controller and graphics controller. It is paired with the Intel NM410 chipset.

The processor is cooled by an active fan-heatsink, while the tiny chipset makes do with a heatsink to match its size. The processor is wired to two memory slots for single-channel DDR3 memory. While the NM410 gives out two SATA 3 Gb/s ports, an additional Gigabyte GSATA2 PCI-Express controller gives out two more SATA 3 Gb/s ports with RAID support, and an IDE connector supporting two IDE devices. The lone expansion slot is a PCI. Connectivity includes 6-channel HD audio, gigabit Ethernet, COM/LPT ports, D-Sub for display, and a number of USB 2.0 ports. ASUS Intros Eee PC 1015PD Netbook, Packs DDR3, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth 3.0

ASUS rolled out its Eee PC 1015PD netbook which brings with it a certain new hardware features, after numerous Eee PC models carrying essentially the same hardware. The new netbook packs second-generation Intel Atom N475 (1.83 GHz) or N455 (1.66 GHz) processor, 1 GB of DDR3 memory. JEDEC Publishes Widely Anticipated DDR3L Low Voltage Memory Standard

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in standards development for the microelectronics industry, today announced the publication of JEDEC DDR3L, a widely anticipated addendum to its JESD79-3 DDR3 Memory Device Standard. Continuing the evolution of DDR3 as the dominant DRAM standard today, DDR3L will enable a significant reduction in power consumption for a broad range of products that utilize memory; including laptops, desktops, servers, networking systems and a wide array of consumer electronics products. The updated version of JESD79-3, including the DDR3L addendum, is available for free download here.

Called DDR3L for DDR3 Low Voltage, devices adhering to the new standard will operate from a single 1.35V power supply voltage compared to 1.5V in existing devices. Under the new standard, DDR3L memory devices will be functionally compatible to DDR3 memory devices, but not all devices will be interoperable at both voltage ranges.
