NVIDIA AIC Partners Clarify RTX 3080/3090 Crash to Desktop Issues, Capacitor Choices

(UPDATE 28SEPT 16H31 GMT: Updated the MSI section with changes in the RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio store page).

Compounding the limited availability with the crash to desktop issues users have been experiencing with NVIDIA's recent RTX 3080/3090 graphics cards have led to rivers of digital ink being run on NVIDIA's latest RTX-30 series. After we've reported on NVIDIA's PG132 "Base Design" and manufacturer-specific capacitor choices and circuitry, we've now seen many of NVIDIA's AIC partners actually respond to this issue, clarifying their choices in this specific part of RTX 30-series board design, as well as the steps they've taken (if any) so as to help solve the issues (which are thus confirmed as being somewhat related to these capacitor choices, even if they are not the root cause.)

Alphacool Announces Waterblocks For MSI & ASUS RTX3080/RTX3090

Today, Alphacool presents several new coolers that are ready to pre-order for GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 cards. Delivery will begin at the end of October. These include coolers for the ASUS STRIX and TUF series and coolers for the MSI Gaming X Trio series. The new coolers cover all important components like voltage converter, graphics memory and of course the GPU. Also any other important areas that tend to get hot are also cooled via liquid. To ensure the best possible heat transfer, Alphacool uses special 1 mm thick Ultra Soft thermal pads for all surrounding components, which snuggle particularly well to the components. The incredibly soft consistency of the Ultra Soft thermal pads behaves similar to a thermal paste after heating. Due to this perfect coating, the heat transfer is much better than with standard thermal pads.

All Eisblock Aurora coolers for the RTX 3080 and 3090 models are delivered with backplate. It is not necessary to purchase them separately. Like all Eisblock Aurora coolers, these models offer a comprehensive Digital RGB, sometimes better known as aRGB, illumination.

NVIDIA: RTX 3090 Performance 10-15% Higher Than RTX 3080 in 4K

NVIDIA themselves have shared performance slides for their imminent RTX 3090 graphics card, the new halo product that's been marketed as the new Titan. Previous-gen Titans have achieved extremely meager performance uplifts compared to NVIDIA's top-of-the-line cards (see RTX 2080 Ti vs RTX Titan, an average of 8% performance difference in favor of the Titan. According to the company, users should expect a slightly higher performance uplift this time around, though the 10-15% higher performance in 4K still seems meager - in pure price/performance terms - for the average consumer.

The average consumer who isn't the main focus for this graphics card and its gargantuan 24 GB of GDDR6X memory, anyway - this is more aimed at the semi-professional or professional crowds working with specialized software, whether it be in rendering or AI-based workloads. The RTX 3090 is thus not so much a product for the discerning computer enthusiast, but more of a halo product for gamers, and a crucial product for professionals and academics.

GALAX Confirms GeForce RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Matches RTX 2080

An alleged event by GALAX targeted at distributors in China revealed up to three upcoming SKUs in NVIDIA's RTX 30-series. This comes as yet another confirmation from a major NVIDIA AIC partner about the 20 GB variant of the GeForce RTX 3080. The RTX 3080 originally launched with 10 GB memory earlier this month, and it is widely expected that NVIDIA fills the price-performance gap between this $700 SKU and its $1,500 sibling. The RTX 3080 uses twenty 8 Gbit GDDR6X memory chips (two chips per 32-bit data-path), much like how the RTX 3090 achieves its 24 GB memory amount.

Elsewhere we see GALAX mention the RTX 3060, a performance-segment SKU positioned under the RTX 3070. You'll notice that the product-stack graph by GALAX suggests performance comparisons to previous-generation SKUs. The RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 are faster than everything from the previous generation, while the RTX 3070, which is coming next month, is shown trading blows with both the RTX 2080 Ti and the RTX 2080 Super. In this same graph, the RTX 3060 is shown matching up to the RTX 2080 (non-Super), a card NVIDIA originally launched at $700.

NVIDIA's Ampere-based Quadro RTX Graphics Card Pictured

Here is the first picture of an alleged next-generation Quadro RTX graphics card based on the "Ampere" architecture, courtesy YouTube channel "Moore's Law is Dead." The new Quadro RTX 6000-series shares many of its underpinnings with the recently launched GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, in being based on the 8 nm "GA102" silicon. The reference board design retains a lateral blower-type cooling solution, with the blower drawing in air from both sides of the card, through holes punched in the PCB, "Fermi" style. The card features the latest NVLink bridge connector, and unless we're mistaken, it features a single power input near its tail end, which is very likely a 12-pin Molex MicroFit 3.0 input.

As for specifications, "Moore's Law is Dead," shared a handful of alleged specifications that include maxing out of the "GA102" silicon, with all its 42 TPCs (84 SMs) enabled, working out to 10,752 CUDA cores. As detailed in an older story about the next-gen Quadro, NVIDIA is prioritizing memory size over bandwidth, which means this card will receive 48 GB of conventional 16 Gbps GDDR6 memory across the GPU's 384-bit wide memory interface. The 48 GB is achieved using twenty four 16 Gbit GDDR6 memory chips (two chips per 32-bit wide data-path). This configuration provides 768 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which is only 8 GB/s higher than that of the GeForce RTX 3080. The release date of the next-gen Quadro RTX will depend largely on the supply of 16 Gbit GDDR6 memory chips, with leading memory manufacturers expecting 2021 shipping, unless NVIDIA has secured an early production batch.

NVIDIA RTX 3090 Dagger-Hashimoto Mining Performance Leaked; Ampere Likely Not on Miners' Minds

Alleged mining benchmarks of NVIDIA's upcoming RTX 3090 graphics card have leaked, and the scenario looks great for non-mining usages. The RTX 3090 is being quoted as achieving 120 MH/s on the ubiquitous Dagger-Hashimoto ETHash protocol. That number in itself is impressive - but not when one considers the cards' 350 W board power. granted, a 100% PL isn't the best scenario for mining - and one would expect no knowledgeable miners to use their graphics cards on the NVIDIA-shipped power-curve spot their graphics cards come in at (nor AMD cards, mind you).

The RTX 3080 may be a better example, as there have been more numerous benchmarks done on that particular GPU. It strikes the best balance in performance and power at around 65% PL (210 W), where it achieves 79.8 MH/s. However, previus-gen AMD RX 5700 XT graphics cards have been shown around 50 MH/s whilst consuming only 110 W (with underclocking and undervoltage), which, paired with that particular graphics card's pricing, makes it a much, much better bet for mining efficiency and return on investment. The point is this: reports of miners gobbling up RTX 3000 series stock are, at least for now, apparently unfounded. And this may mean us regular users of graphics cards can rest assured that we won't have to deal with miner-induced shortages. At least until AMD's Navi flounders (eh) to shore.

NVIDIA Will Stop Creating SLI Driver Profiles After January 2021

NVIDIA has been limiting SLI support recently with only the RTX 3090 featuring support for the feature and even then only through modern APIs such as DirectX 12 and Vulkan meaning that games must explicitly support SLI to work. NVIDIA will no longer be adding new SLI driver profiles on RTX 20 Series and earlier GPUs starting on January 1st, 2021. The only way to use SLI going forward will be through native game integrations which NVIDIA will focus on helping developers provide. NVIDIA also noted that various DirectX 12 and Vulkan games already feature native integrations such as; Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Civilization VI, Sniper Elite 4, Gears of War 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Creative and other non-gaming applications that support multi-GPU acceleration will continue to function across all supported GPUs.

Emtek Announces 410 W Xenon GeForce RTX 3090 Turbo Jet OC D6X 24GB GPU

Emtek a South Korean company have recently announced the Xenon GeForce RTX 3090 Turbo Jet OC D6X 24GB GPU which comes with a glamorous shroud and a max power consumption of 410 W. The card features three 8-pin PCIe power connectors and is recommended to be run with a 850 W power supply or higher. This 410 W power draw is 17.1% higher than the suggested 350 W power profile from NVIDIA and explains the 850 W power supply requirement. The card features a 5.3% higher boost clock then reference models at 1785 MHz and will likely offer some of if not the best gaming performance available. The Xenon GeForce RTX 3090 Turbo Jet is exclusive to South Korea and is unlikely to receive a worldwide release.

NVIDIA Readies RTX 3060 8GB and RTX 3080 20GB Models

A GIGABYTE webpage meant for redeeming the RTX 30-series Watch Dogs Legion + GeForce NOW bundle, lists out eligible graphics cards for the offer, including a large selection of those based on unannounced RTX 30-series GPUs. Among these are references to a "GeForce RTX 3060" with 8 GB of memory, and more interestingly, a 20 GB variant of the RTX 3080. The list also confirms the RTX 3070S with 16 GB of memory.

The RTX 3080 launched last week comes with 10 GB of memory across a 320-bit memory interface, using 8 Gbit memory chips, while the RTX 3090 achieves its 24 GB memory amount by piggy-backing two of these chips per 32-bit channel (chips on either side of the PCB). It's conceivable that the the RTX 3080 20 GB will adopt the same method. There exists a vast price-gap between the RTX 3080 10 GB and the RTX 3090, which NVIDIA could look to fill with the 20 GB variant of the RTX 3080. The question on whether you should wait for the 20 GB variant of the RTX 3080 or pick up th 10 GB variant right now, will depend on the performance gap between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. We'll answer this question next week.

GIGABYTE Unveils RTX 3090 TURBO: For When You Absolutely Need Lateral Blowers for 350W GPUs

Perhaps the most unique GeForce RTX 3090 offerings from GIGABYTE has to be the Turbo Edition. Possibly its most cost-effective card based on the $1,500 GPU, the Turbo Edition features a classic lateral-blower based cooling solution that guides all its air through an aluminium channel-type heatsink, and out of the rear bracket, with none of it exhausted into the case. This is a bold choice for a cooler given the feisty 350 W typical board power for the RTX 3090. The card is exactly 2 slots thick, and just 26.6 cm long, making it possibly the shortest air-cooled RTX 3090. It's a little over 11 cm tall (standard full-height). An interesting design choice by GIGABYTE is to locate the card's two 8-pin PCIe power connectors at the tail end of the card. GIGABYTE didn't reveal whether the card features factory-overclocked speeds, but we expect it to stick to reference speeds. Display outputs include two each of HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a connectors.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 "CEO Edition" Rears its Head, Most Likely a Fake

Social media is abuzz with a screengrab of a regional webpage of the NVIDIA website purporting a "GeForce RTX 3090 CEO Edition" graphics card. Positioned a notch above the "Founders Edition," this $3,499 card, if even remotely real, could be a limited edition product. The screengrab references "48 GB of G6X" memory. We're not sure how this is even possible. The RTX 3090 already uses 8 Gbit GDDR6X chips, piggybacking two chips per 32-bit memory channel, unless Micron has done the unthinkable by launching a 16 Gbit G6X chip within 2020. Frankly, we're very interested to see how the next-gen Quadro RTX even achieves its alleged 48 GB of GDDR6.

That aside, the alloy frame now comes with a gold finish. We wonder if memory and a fancy trim is all that NVIDIA is asking the extra 2 Grand for, or if it even maxed out the "GA102" ASIC (there are two more TPCs left to unlock). As for the name "CEO Edition," there have been instances of tech CEOs flexing their vanity on limited edition products. Limited edition Ryzen and Radeon products, for example, bear the AMD CEO's signature. So the name "CEO Edition" by itself isn't implausible. Just not with these specs, and not this price.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 XC3 and FTW3 Pictured in the Flesh

Here are some of the first pictures of the EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 XC3 and FTW3 air-cooled graphics cards in the flesh. The XC3 forms EVGA's more affordable RTX 3090 offering, while the FTW3 will be the company's premium air-cooled product. There will be liquid-cooled products based on the same PCB as the FTW3, as well as overclocker-segment products under EVGA's Kingpin collaboration.

The EVGA RTX 3090 XC3 features a simpler dual-slot cooling solution that uses a trio of fans. The card is 11 cm of (standard full-height) tall. It draws power from no more than two 8-pin PCIe power inputs. The card is expected to tick at NVIDIA-reference clock speeds for the RTX 3090, and its non-overclocked variant could be priced close to NVIDIA's $1,499 baseline price. The FTW3, on the other hand, features a meaty triple-slot cooling solution that's at least an inch taller than full-height. The cooler makes lavish use of chrome and RGB LED elements. The PCB uses a meatier VRM solution that pulls power from three 8-pin PCIe power inputs.

NVIDIA's Top "Ampere" Based Quadro RTX Features 10,752 CUDA Cores, 48GB Memory

Possible specifications of NVIDIA's next-generation flagship Quadro RTX professional graphics card leaked to the web. The SKU is possibly based on the same 8 nm "GA102" silicon as the GeForce RTX 3090, but features more of the silicon unlocked. It apparently features 10,752 CUDA cores, or exactly one TPC (two SMs) more than the RTX 3090. With 84 SM (42 TPC), the unnamed Quadro RTX should feature 84 RT cores, 336 Tensor cores, and 336 TMUs.

NVIDIA's choice for memory for the upcoming Quadro RTX flagship is interesting, as it's prioritizing memory size over bandwidth (which is more relevant in the professional visualization use-case dealing with large data sets). The card features 48 GB of conventional GDDR6 memory clocked at 16 Gbps over the chip's 384-bit wide memory interface, which should work out to 768 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The max GPU Boost frequency is pegged at 1860 MHz. There's no word on availability. Pictured below is the previous-gen Quadro RTX 5000.

NVIDIA: GeForce RTX 3080 Reviews Delayed, RTX 3070 Availability Confirmed

NVIDIA in a GeForce community forums post by staff member, announced that reviews of the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition have been delayed to September 16, with the review NDA lifting at 6:00 AM Pacific Time. This NDA was originally slated to be lifted on September 14. According to a Reddit post by an NVIDIA representative "NV-Tim," the delay was in response to certain reviewers requesting more time from NVIDIA as COVID-19 impacted their sampling logistics.

In other news, NVIDIA announced that its $499 (starting) GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card will be available on October 15, 2020. The performance segment graphics card is hotly anticipated by the gaming community as the other two products in the series—RTX 3080 and RTX 3090—are enthusiast segment products. NVIDIA claims that the RTX 3070 beats the RTX 2080 Ti in performance, which means the card should be capable of 1440p high refresh-rate gaming, and 4K UHD gaming at 60 Hz.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Looks Huge When Installed

Here's the first picture of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition card installed in an tower case. The triple-slot card measures 31.3 cm in length, and is 13.8 cm tall. Its design is essentially an upscale of that of the RTX 3080. The card still pulls power from a single 12-pin power connector, with an adapter included for two 8-pin connectors to convert to the 12-pin. The typical board power of the card is rated at 350 W. This particular card in the leak, posted on ChipHell forums, is pre-production as VideoCardz comments, given that some parts of its metal superstructure lack the chrome finish of the card NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled on September 1. The RTX 3090 launches on September 24.

Various Custom RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Graphics Cards Priced in Germany

The $1,499 "starting price" of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 is beginning to look a lot less suggestive, as pricing of custom-design RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 graphics cards surfaced on German e-tailer Caseking.de. Prices of some of the higher trim custom RTX 3090 cards can be as high as 1,719€, including taxes, which converts to a little over $2,024 (USD, without taxes), making pre-announcement speculation of custom RTX 3090 being effectively "$2,000 cards" a lot more credible.

That said, the cheapest custom RTX 3090 we could spot in this selection goes for about 1,576€ including taxes ($1,855). Much like its MSRP, the RTX 3090 is on average 50% pricier than the RTX 2080 Ti. Prices of custom-design RTX 3080, on the other hand, are closer to what custom-design RTX 2080 went for at launch. The cheapest custom-design RTX 3080 can be had for around 756€ including taxes ($890), and the pricier ones going for 804€ including taxes ($950). It's important to note here, that prices on US retailers are quoted without taxes, whereas the EU enforces prices to be quoted inclusive of taxes.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition Pictured in the Flesh

Here's one of the first clear pictures of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition graphics card pictured in the flesh (that isn't an NVIDIA press-shot or render). A PC enthusiast in China with access to Founders Edition cards of all three RTX 3000 series cards announced on September 1, posted a family shot, which provides a nice size comparison.

The RTX 3070 Founders Edition is noticeably shorter than the RTX 3080 FE. Both cards are dwarfed by the RTX 3090 FE. Unlike the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, the RTX 3070 FE uses a more conventional approach to air-flow, with both of its cards on the obverse side of the card, even through the second fan still pushes some of its airflow through the PCB, through a partial cutout. All three cards use the 12-pin Molex MicroFit 3.0 power connector. The previous generation flagship RTX 2080 Ti is the butt of gamer memes thanks to the RTX 3070, as NVIDIA advertised it as being faster than the RTX 2080 Ti at half its price of $499 (starting price). This announcement has forced some RTX 2080 Ti owners to dump their cards on Ebay at throwaway prices.

Bykski Unveils Full Coverage Water Block for NVIDIA RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 Ampere

Bykski Tuesday unveiled its full-coverage water-block for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 "Ampere" Founders Edition graphics cards (model: N-RTX3090-X). The block works with both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Founders Edition cards as both share a common PCB design, with a few bits changed for the RTX 3090, such as added height and NVLink fingers. The block uses nickel-plated copper as its primary material, with two options for the top - clear acrylic, or POM acetal. The acrylic variant is studded with addressable RGB LEDs.

The main coolant channel of the N-RTX3090-X passes through all the hot components on the business end of the PCB, including a micro-fin lattice over the GPU, and mirror-finish contact surfaces for both the GPU and memory chips. The block comes with support for standard G 1/4" fittings. In addition to the N-RTX3090-X, Bykski unveiled the B-VGA-SC-FX Custom Mount (to be purchased separately), an accessory with an LCD segment screen that displays coolant temperature. The N-RTX3090-X is expected to be priced at 140€.

GeForce RTX 3080 Rips and Tears Through DOOM Eternal at 4K, Over 100 FPS

NVIDIA on Thursday posted a taste of the performance on offer with its new GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. In a gameplay video posted on YouTube with performance metrics enabled, the card was shown running "DOOM Eternal" with details maxed out at 4K UHD resolution, where it clocked over 100 frames per second, or roughly 50% higher than the RTX 2080 Super. In quite a few scenes the RTX 3080 manages close to 120 FPS, which should be a treat for high refresh-rate gamers.

Throughout the video, NVIDIA compared the RTX 3080 to the previous-gen flagship, the RTX 2080 Ti, with 20-30% performance gains shown for Ampere. Both cards have identical image quality as the settings are constant between both test beds. NVIDIA is positioning the RTX 3080 as a 4K gaming workhorse product, while the top-dog RTX 3090 was pitched as an "8K 60 Hz capable" card in its September 1 presentation. The RTX 3090 should offer 4K gaming with high refresh rates. DOOM Eternal continues to be one of the year's bright spots in PC gaming, with a new DLC expected to come out in October.

NVIDIA Reserves NVLink Support For The RTX 3090

NVIDIA has issued another major blow to multi-GPU gaming with their recent RTX 30 series announcement. The only card to support NVLink SLI in this latest generation will be the RTX 3090 and will require a new NVLink bridge which costs 79 USD. NVIDIA reserved NVLink support for the RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080 Super, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti in their Turing range of graphics cards. The AMD CrossFire multi-GPU solution has also become irrelevant after support for it was dropped with RDNA. Developer support for the feature has also declined due to the high cost of implementation, small user base, and often poor performance improvements. With the NVIDIA RTX 3090 set to retail for 1499 USD, the cost of a multi-GPU setup will exceed 3079 USD reserving the feature for only the wealthiest of gamers.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX Ampere AIB Cards Listed on Overclockers UK, Official EU/UK Pricing Published

NVIDIA just yesterday made a big announcement and forced everyone to turn their head and check out what are they doing. Today, we are finding the first listings of Add-In-Board (AIB) partner cards and their respective price points. Thanks to the findings of a Reddit user u/slyquick we have information about the pricing of RTX Ampere cards in the UK/EU, specifically on the Overclockers UK website. There are listed several models of AIB cards, covering the whole range of RTX 3070, 3080, and 3090. NVIDIA has officially published the UK/EU pricing of the cards with Founders Edition (FE) GeForce RTX 3070 costing $499 in the US, costing about £469. The OCUK website lists RTX 3070 AIB cards at £449 and the highest costing models are about £499.

Next up comes GeForce RTX 3080, a GPU costing $699 in the US, is being officially listed for £649 by NVIDIA. On the OCUK website pricing starts at £639, and goes as high as £848.99 for ASUS ROG Strix Gaming OC card. The bigger brother of the RTX Ampere lineup - the RTX 3090 - is priced at $1499, while NVIDIA lists it at £1399 for EU/UK pricing. AIB cards are going anywhere from the NVIDIA FE card at £1,399, all the way up to at £1589.99. This is a big markup compared to the FE model, however, AIB cards are known for providing better cooling solutions and better power delivery circuit.
