NVIDIA Brings the Benefits of DirectStorage 1.1 to Vulkan Under its RTX-IO Brand

NVIDIA dusted off its RTX-IO technology moniker which we thought it retired in the wake of the now-standardized DirectStorage API, in an attempt to bring its benefits to games powered by the Vulkan API. Team Green was the first to introduce such a technology to the PC platform, something functionally-similar existed with game consoles, where it plays a key role in speeding up game loading times. DirectStorage enables a means for the GPU to directly communicate with a storage device, with no round-trips to the CPU cores or main memory. This enables a quicker way for a game to transfer its assets to the video memory. NVIDIA introduces this as part of its latest GeForce 526.98 WHQL drivers. The same drivers also introduce official DirectStorage 1.1 support.

With DirectStorage 1.1, Microsoft went a step ahead and introduced GPU-accelerated game asset decompression. Game assets (such as textures) are stored on your disk in compressed form, and are decompressed as needed when your game loads. This involves the CPU cores, and tends to be slower when compared to getting the same job done by a GPU when not rendering 3D graphics. NVIDIA even developed a file-compression format optimized for highly-parallelized decompression hardware such as GPUs. The standardization by Microsoft extends this feature to other brands of GPUs (such as AMD and Intel, which are confirmed to be implementing it); but games powered by the Vulkan API were left out in the lurch. NVIDIA developed a Vulkan version of the original RTX-IO tech (which would go on to develop into DirectStorage), so now game developers with engines primarily designed for Vulkan (such as idTech), can speed up game load times.

NVIDIA GeForce 526.98 WHQL Drivers Released

NVIDIA today released the latest GeForce Game Ready software. Version 526.98 WHQL adds official support for the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card launched earlier this week. It also adds optimization for "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales," "Warhammer 40,0000: Darktide," the latest patch update for "WRC Generations," and "World of Warcraft: Dragonflight." It adds DLSS 3 support for the latest "Spider-Man" title, as well as DLAA support for "Monster Hunter Rise." The drivers also introduce official support for DirectStorage 1.1 API, as well as RTX-IO support for Vulkan. This way, even Vulkan API-based games can enjoy GPU-accelerated game asset decompression, speeding up game loading times.

DLSS 3 is now made to get along with VSYNC On G-SYNC and G-SYNC Compatible Monitors & TVs. The new HDR10+ Gaming standard is now implemented. Among the issues fixed with this driver release are a game crash with "Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection," on GTX 10-series GPUs, application crashes with Daz Studio and Maxon Cinema 4D; and minor quirks with Fujitsu Siemens SL23T-1, and the G-SYNC logo not displaying with LG OLED TVs that support it. NVIDIA Releases Security Update 473.47 WHQL Driver for Kepler GPUs

Ten years ago, in 2012, NVIDIA introduced its Kepler series of graphics cards based on the TSMC 28 nm node. Architecture has been supported for quite a while now by NVIDIA's drivers, and the last series to carry support was the 470 driver class. Today, NVIDIA pushed a security update in the form of a 473.47 WHQL driver that brings fixes to various CVE vulnerabilities that can cause anything from issues that may lead to denial of service, information disclosure, or data tampering. This driver version has no fixed matters and doesn't bring any additional features except the fix for vulnerabilities. With CVEs rated from 4.1 to 8.5, NVIDIA has fixed major issues bugging Kepler GPU users. With a high risk for code execution, denial of service, escalation of privileges, information disclosure, and data tampering, the 473.47 WHQL driver is another step for supporting Kepler architecture until 2024, when NVIDIA plans to drop the support for this architecture. Supported cards are GT 600, GT 700, GTX 600, GTX 700, Titan, Titan Black, and Titan Z.

The updated drivers are available for installation on NVIDIA's website and for users of TechPowerUp's NVCleanstall software.

NVIDIA Releases Game Ready 496.13 WHQL GeForce Graphics Driver, Support Removed for Windows 8.1/8/7 & Kepler

NVIDIA has today launched its 496.13 game-ready WHQL GeForce graphics driver with many improvements and changes. Starting with the naming, the company has jumped from the 472.12 WHQL version released on September 20th to the 496.xx naming released today. Such a significant increase in version naming is uncommon, and makes us wonder why the company decided to do it, probably in preparation for the Windows 11 branch of their drivers, which uses version 500.

Starting from release 496.13, NVIDIA has also removed support for Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7. The last driver to support these operating systems is 472.12. This makes some sense, since between this release and today, Microsoft has launched their Windows 11 operating system. NVIDIA also trimmed more fat by removing support for the Kepler architecture, which was launched in 2012 and included models like GeForce GTX 780 Ti, GTX 780, GTX 770, GTX 760, GT 740, GT 730, GTX 690, GTX 680, GTX 670, GTX 660 Ti, GTX 660, GTX 650 Ti and GTX 630.

NVIDIA's New 30HX & 40HX Crypto Mining Cards Are Based on Turing Architecture

We have recently discovered that NVIDIA's newly announced 30HX and 40HX Crypto Mining Processors are based on the last-generation Turing architecture. This news will come as a pleasant surprise to gamers as the release shouldn't affect the availability of Ampere RTX 30 Series GPUs. The decision to stick with Turing for these new devices is reportedly due to the more favorable power-management of the architecture which is vital for profitable cryptocurrency mining operations. The NVIDIA CMP 40HX will feature a custom TU106 processor while the 30HX will include a custom TU116. This information was discovered in the latest GeForce 461.72 WHQL drivers which added support for the two devices.
