MSI Working on ‘Powerless’ CPU Cooler

MSI has taken a step to try and reduce computer power consumption slightly by building a processor fan that is powered using only heat given off by the CPU. As the processor heats up, it causes air inside a piston to expand. That forces out the piston rod, which in turn causes the fan to spin and blow air over the heatsink, as shown in the first image below. This then helps to cool the air inside the piston, causing it to contract again, pulling the piston rod back in and cooling the CPU without needing any extra electricity. The technology is by no means a modern idea - it uses a mechanism invented in 1816 by Scottish engineer Robert Stirling - but it's never before been used on a large scale for computing purposes. MSI's fan is capable of converting 70% of the heat energy given off by the CPU into kinetic energy, and the company plans to demo the cooler at next week's CeBIT show in Hanover. However, there is no news of when this fan will become available for purchase, or what prices will be like.

Akasa Enters The VGA Coolers Market With Vortexx

Thermalright Unveils SI-128 SE CPU Cooler

In 2006 when Thermalright released the SI-128, it became one of the favorites among enthusiasts. This year, we added our proprietary thru holes on every fins to enhance ventilation by increasing air-to-surface contact with air, we call this all new CPU heatsink, SI-128 SE!

Other similar structured (blow down) heatsinks has no support in the front. Heatpipes alone will not be enough to support the weight over time and the result can be as shown in the picture on the right. When the heatpipes are bent to some degree, the performance level drops.

OCZ Cryo-Z just around the corner

OCZ has been talking about its Cryo-Z phase-change cooler for quite some time now and, although promises were high and mighty, the minutes, hours, days and months have passed and nothing became a reality.

The Cryo-Z has been recently deemed as canceled, the rumor was countered by OCZ but the whole truth is that, more than a year after it was first showcased, the Cryo-Z is finally on the home stretch. The phase-change cooler is currently in the safe hands of OCZ's engineers and it will arrive in stores very soon, before the end of this quarter. It should be very appealing to anyone who wants to run (overclocked) CPUs at sub-zero temperatures.

The unit should cost around $300 (last pricing update a year ago).

Asetek signs research agreement with Professor Massoud Kaviany

Broenderslev, Denmark, June 21 2007 - Asetek, the market leader of thermal management solutions for semiconductors, announced today that they have signed a research agreement with Professor, Ph.D. Massoud Kaviany from University of Michigan.

CPU and GPU capabilities improve by continuously growing the number of transistors in the core, by increasing the clock frequency, and by implementing more CPU cores into multicore processors. This results in higher power consumption which makes thermal management much more challenging. However, there is another factor which is becoming more critical than power consumption; hotspots. Hotspots can generate a very high heatflux and therefore impose tremendous demands on the effectiveness of the CPU and GPU cooler.

To meet this challenge Asetek will work in cooperation with Professor Massoud Kaviany to develop advanced single and two phase cooling solutions. These solutions will have the ability to handle the highly localized and extreme heatfluxes in the future CPU and GPU systems.

"It is an exciting time at Asetek, and we are really pleased to have partnered with Professor Massoud Kaviany on the development of these new cooling solutions," says Christian Christiansen, VP of Engineering at Asetek. Coolink Presents "Silentator" High-Performance Cooler

Coolink today presented a new high-performance cooler for Intel and AMD processors called "Silentator". The Silentator employs 3 high-performance heat-pipes, 37 aluminium cooling fins with a surface area of more than 3500cm² as well as a SWiF-1202 quality fan, providing top-class cooling performance at a minimum noise emission of only 14dB(A). The Silentator is equipped with the professional SecuFirm mounting system that guarantees optimal contact pressure and maximum security thanks to the use of a backplate and spring-loaded screws. As a result, the SecuFirm mounting system makes it possible to safely transport the assembled system without any risk even though the cooler exceeds the 450g weight specification established by Intel and AMD. The Silentator is available with immediate effect in versions for Intel LGA 775, for AMD AM2 and for AMD K8 (754, 939, 940). The suggested retail price is EUR 39,90 / USD 49,90.

OCZ demonstrates the future of cooling

OCZ has been showing off its latest computer cooling technology at Computex 2007 this week - a heatsink made of directional carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are an allotrope of carbon (ie. a certain form of carbon - diamond and graphite are other examples) and are predicted to be the next major advancement in cooling, due to their superior thermal conduction properties compared to current materials such as copper and aluminium. According to OCZ, carbon nanotubes are five times more efficient than copper when it comes to cooling, and due to their design they can be used to transfer heat in just one direction - other materials such as copper tend move heat more radially, which isn't always desirable. They are constructed by making small wire-like structures using sheets of graphene just one atom thick and rolling them into cylinders, which allows heat to be moved in one direction as it is moved along the alignment of the nanotubes. The cooler itself is called the OCZ Hydrojet, but there is no information on when this will be available for retail - or how large the dent in your savings will be if you want to buy one.

Zalman to launch two new VGA coolers


Above, you can see the Zalman ZM-90 HP. The cooler is made from aluminum, and should be capable of cooling today's mid-range graphic cards.

The VF1000 is an active cooler manufactured from aluminum using four heat-pipes. Don't be deceived by its apparently small size: it will be capable of cooling GeForce 8800 GTX.

HD 2900XT Cooling Design Note

Many people out there who are keen on getting one of AMDs R600 cards already have a watercooling setup I guess. Other people who plan to purchase such a card might plan on going the watercooling road as well and for these people the following note is highly interesting. The metal shim around the HD 2900XT cards is taller than the core, not flush nor is the opposite the case. Take a close look at the pictures below, some of you might have thought the core is raised higher than the shim by mistake. To proof the stated fact following a quote of Shamino from VR-Zone:

If you plan to use a water cooler in order to cool the card, which makes sense according to the preliminary thoughts regarding power consumption, you should double check if your cooler fits onto the card. It has to be either very narrow or needs a recess to be milled on it following the outer edge to some degree. Shown on the last picture is the DangerDen MAZE5 GPU block which served such recess in order to be compatible to the first X800 cards. The last solution would be to remove the shim, which will void the warranty of course.

IBM Improves CPU Cooling

New research by Big Blue could see CPUs running up to 40% cooler in the near future, without needing prices to rocket. In a paper released at the IEEE Semi-Therm conference, IBM published ideas designed to make thermal paste more efficient, therefore allowing for an improved cooling capacity leading to cooler processors. According to IBM, current thermal paste techniques can lead to 40% of heat given off by the CPU being absorbed by the particles in the paste, largely caused by the fact that the particles don't spread evenly, leading to the "Magic Cross" shown in the image below and to the left. IBM's new technology involves integrating micro-meter length trenches into the copper cap that sits above the CPU core (below on the right), which will allow thermal paste to be more evenly distributed and will lead to a third less thermal paste being required, as well as halving the pressure required to fit a CPU cooler. IBM still needs to finalise the research, but this relatively in-expensive method could be integrated into new CPUs and coolers before too long.
