RIKEN and Intel Collaborate on "Road to Exascale"

RIKEN and Intel Corporation (hereafter referred to as Intel) have signed a memorandum of understanding on collaboration and cooperation to accelerate joint research in next-generation computing fields such as AI (artificial intelligence), high-performance computing, and quantum computers. The signing ceremony was concluded on May 18, 2023. As part of this MOU, RIKEN will work with Intel Foundry Services (IFS) to prototype these new solutions.
Details of Cooperation
  • Computer technology related to supercomputers and AI
  • Silicon-based quantum computer technology and quantum simulation technology
  • Prototype in collaboration with Intel Foundry Services (IFS)
In this collaboration, RIKEN and Intel will make use of the research and technological capabilities of both parties to dramatically improve performance on the road to zettascale (zetta is 10 to the 21st power, 1,000 times that of exascale).

As the scale of big data increases, further sophistication of the computational infrastructure for machine learning and deep learning is required, and dramatic improvements in the performance of supercomputers and quantum computers are desired.

In order to meet this demand, RIKEN, the only comprehensive research institute for natural sciences in Japan, is currently implementing the RIKEN In 2023. We launched the Transformative Research Innovation Platform of RIKEN platforms (TRIP) [see project diagram here], a cross-sectional project. TRIP will connect RIKEN's cutting-edge research platforms (supercomputers, large-scale synchrotron radiation facilities, bioresource projects, etc.), accelerate and develop research digital transformation (research DX), and provide an engine for social change. In order to promote this, it is necessary to accelerate research in the field of next-generation computing, such as improving the performance of supercomputers and quantum computers.

Intel has a long history of fundamental process innovation that has allowed us to continue evolving Moore's law. Through continued innovation in areas such as high-performance computing and quantum computing, Intel remains steadfast in Moore's law. With the rapid growth of AI, Intel is now focused on democratizing AI by enabling massive hardware performance and developer productivity. Intel is also actively working on quantum computing innovations that offer new computing paradigms and revolutionize every industrial sector. As workloads and applications grow in complexity, quantum computing will augment supercomputers and high-performance computing.
