This Week in Gaming (Week 42)

October appears to be yet a busy month with many new game releases and this coming week is jam packed with new releases, even though none of them can exactly be called a AAA release. That said, we do have a couple of big releases nonetheless, the major one being a new take on a classic console game. The rest of this week's releases range from strategy puzzles to action-adventures and a touch of hell, to dungeons and hot wheels, to finally finishing the week with some horror.

Sonic Superstars / This week's major release / Tuesday 17 October
Adventure through the mystical Northstar Islands in this all-new take on classic 2D Sonic high-speed action platforming. Play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy and harness all-new Emerald powers to move and attack in dynamic new ways. Navigate gorgeous, never-before-seen environments solo or with up to 3 other players and stop Dr. Eggman, Fang, and a mysterious new adversary from converting the islands' giant animals into Badniks before it's too late!
Growth / Monday 16 October
Growth is a cozy, hexagonal-grid based soft-strategy game. Explore and populate a procedurally generated world by utilizing unique abilities of animals. Growth blends the beauty of cozy exploration with challenging navigation around obstacles such as mountains and rivers to populate fertile soil, transforming barren landscapes into lush forests, meadows, and more.
Wizard with a Gun / Tuesday 17 October
Wizard with a Gun is an online cooperative sandbox survival game set in a magical wilderness wrought with dangerous creatures and arcane mysteries. Embark on a journey alone or with a friend to collect, craft, and outfit your wizard however you see fit as you explore the unknown. Carefully design weapons, bullets, and furnishings for your tower home but try not to burn it all down as the magic you wield escalates beyond your control…
Hellboy Web of Wyrd / Wednesday 18 October
Hellboy Web of Wyrd is a roguelike action brawler with an original story created in partnership with Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. When an agent of the B.P.R.D. goes missing, Hellboy is sent to investigate; pulling him into the depths of the Wyrd.
Endless Dungeon / Thursday 19 October
Endless Dungeon is a unique blend of roguelite, tactical action, and tower defense set in the award-winning Endless Universe. Plunge into an abandoned space station alone or with friends in co-op, recruit a team of shipwrecked heroes, and protect your crystal against never-ending waves of monsters... or die trying, get reloaded, and try again.
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 - Turbocharged / Thursday 19 October
The world's raddest cars are back and taking the fun to the next level! Race over 130 vehicles with crazy new mechanics and even more vehicle types. Plus, build your tracks with stunning new environments and different game modes to have fun off and online!
Fears to Fathom - Ironbark Lookout / Friday 20 October
Jack Nelson, a 24-year-old fire lookout, transferred to a new outpost. As he settled into his new home, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, little did he know what was transpiring down in Ironbark State Park.

Let me see... I never liked Sonic.
Hm, what do we have next... A wizard copied from Final Fantasy... But why would a wizard need a gun? Meh.

Mostly I liked the Hellboy graphics and the Fears to Fathom theme - Ironbark Lookout that resembles penumbra. It's not surprising at all but I would take a look at it at some point in the future.

Hellboy looks interesting. Apprently Lance Reddick does the voice for Hellboy - guess I'm just used to Ron Perlman being Hellboy, so the voice in the game is kind of off putting.

Endless Dungeon could be an entertaining coop game....to bad it looks like both these games are only selling on Steam and not on GoG.

It's nice to see Sega drawing attention to how much this new sonic game feels like the classic 16-bit ones at both the start and the end of the trailer.

There was a 22-year period where all the Sonic games were hot garbage because they ruined the physics of how Sonic moved, which was always THE defining feature of a Sonic game. Christian Whitehead ended that Streak with Sonic Mania in 2017.

I'm guessing this is one of the few remaining posthumous roles for Lance.

Between this, The DLC for Horizon Zero West, and Destiny 2 stuff, there will be a few things that were in the pipe when he died this year.
RIP.

I love that game so much. One of my most-played on Steam. Like, I've beaten it many times, but it never gets old? That's one of my marks of a good game - able to play it over and over and still not get tired of it.

With this new 2D Sonic game, I'll have to keep my eye on it.
