This Week in Gaming (Week 39)

As we enter the last full week of September, we have another packed week of new game releases to look forward to, although we're not likely to beat last week's lineup of games. This week's major release is a grand strategy game that might just rival the classic Civilization games. This is followed by a chill sandbox construction game set in an era of castles and cottage, a dystopian sci-fi horror looter shooter with a local co-op mode, a sequel to 2019 RPG title, a crafting survival game, but you're a duck, a sci-fi space game combined with a deck builder and finally, some football, of the global kind.

Ara: History Untold / This week's major release / Tuesday 24 September
Ara: History Untold is an evolution in historical grand strategy, featuring beloved classic PC strategy mechanics alongside innovative gameplay like a national crafting economy, true simultaneous turn resolution, a non-linear technology tree, and cloud-backed synchronous/asynchronous multiplayer - all with an expansive and vibrant presentation where you can zoom out from surveying the very edges of your empire all the way down to your citizens living their daily lives. In Ara, there are no pre-set paths to victory, leading to endless possibilities. Your choices will define the world you create, your experience, and your legacy. Steam link
Tiny Glade / Monday 23 September
Tiny Glade is a small diorama builder where you doodle whimsical castles, cozy cottages & romantic ruins. Explore gridless building chemistry as the game adorns your glades with procedural detail. No management, combat or goals: just kick back and turn forgotten meadows into lovable dioramas. Steam link
The Forever Winter / Tuesday 24 September / Early Access
The Forever Winter is a co-op tactical survival horror shooter where you and your squad must loot the dead to survive under the shadow of terrifying and gargantuan war machines locked in a never-ending conflict. Steam link
GreedFall II: The Dying World / Tuesday 24 September / Early Access
Dive back into the unique world of GreedFall again in an even deeper RPG experience. Uprooted from the island of your birth, find your freedom, explore the old continent and forge your destiny through alliances, scheming and battles! Steam link
Duckside / Wednesday 25 September / Early Access
Duckside isn't just about surviving; it's about getting into the mind of a duck. Being a duck. Feeling the cold steel of a machine gun on your feathers. The heat of a grenade exploding next to you. And the peace of mind that comes with settling down after a long day, in a house you built out of trash that you'd looted off some guy's corpse. Don't be a chicken, be a firequacker. Steam link
Breachway / Thursday 26 September
Explore the galaxy in this deckbuilding, sci-fi roguelike where ship upgrades and crew management are key to your survival. Optimize resource generation, engage in intense turn-based battles, and take on ever-growing threats as you seek out The Signal. Steam link
EA Sports FC 25 / Friday 27 September
EA Sports FC 25 gives you more ways to win for the club. Team up with friends in your favourite modes with the new 5v5 Rush, and manage your club to victory as FC IQ delivers more tactical control than ever before. Steam link

Did you watch the developer video?
It will only be $27, no DLC's, all new content will be "free".
They are hoping people will be buying skins though, so they can continue to develop the game.
No server needed either for multi-player co-op.
Looks a bit too involved for me, but it looks like a developer that is willing to largely go back to how things used to be.

"nickel and diming is for the birds" ... yeah and that is the reason why i want to buy the game. they could also do the thing that other devs also do, sell merch if they remain popular enough.

It seems to have potential, but it also looks like a game you really need to invest your time into.

If you don't mind 8-bit style graphics, Gourdlets is a basic city builder along the same theme. Well worth the $5.

Would you mind doing me a favor, test it on your Steam Deck and see if it works with proton experimental? If not it's cool. It's already on my wish list, just curious.

I don't have a Steam Deck. :(

But the game is Linux native (no proton needed) and plays fine on desktop Linux. :)

Really hoping Ara has got the juice. The previews at least show to be a really interesting take on the 4x genre.

Too busy playing UFO 50, a real gem that was missed in last week's roundup.

I played the last "alpha", more like a late beta and it's got the juice. A bit more micro management than Civ though and it takes a bit to work out production. The maps are quite different, but there's no limitations to how your cities can spread out, which is great. You do get resource limited sometimes though, which is annoying, but at least the tech tree is a lot more flexible. I have pre-ordered it based on my play time with it.

I can't cover all games and that would most likely never have made the list, unless it was a really slow week, I'm sorry to say.
Besides, it's not a game, it's 50 games.
