NVIDIA GeForce 8900GTX will have 25% more shaders than predecessor

NVIDIA's "ace-in-the-hole" is not a driver tweak: it's an unlocking of the G80 core. While the current offerings from NVIDIA using the G80 core, the 8800GTS and the 8800GTX, use an already impressive 96/128 unified shaders, respecfully, NVIDIA claims the G80 shipped with more. NVIDIA says that they will make the 8900GTX have 25% more shaders than the 8800GTX, meaning NVIDIA's DirectX 10 offering will have 160 shaders at it's disposal. The unlocked G80 core can be clocked at no higher than 630MHz on air, and 680MHz on water (according to NVIDIA). The Inquirer is guessing that this monster card will ship around the same time as ATI's R600.

Dell now shipping Windows Vista on all it's PC's...except for the ones with G80

It seems that the recent trouble with NVIDIA's G80 driver is taking it's toll on more than just gamers. Dell was one of the first PC makers to promote the complete move to Windows Vista. However, it seems that all the PC's they sell with a G80 onboard, such as the XPS 7x0 series, still ship with Windows XP. This is a smart move on Dell's part, because they realize that their customers are not going to be happy with a beta driver running their brand new and expensive machine. This indicates one of two very bad things about NVIDIA's relationship with Dell. The first is that NVIDIA doesn't keep Dell "in the loop" about it's happenings, and will give Dell a G80 Vista driver when they make it. The second (and much worse) possibility is that NVIDIA keeps Dell "in the loop", and they themselves do not know when they will have a G80 driver for Windows Vista.

The picture below is Dell's high-end PC offerings, pay close attention to the operating system included.

G80 customers angry at lack of WHQL drivers threaten NVIDIA with class action lawsuit

Many people are very unhappy with the lack of good/WHQL certified drivers for their very expensive G80 video cards. A thread on NVIDIA forums has been swarming with lots of flames and FUD toward the G80, and has been closed by one of their moderators. And so, instead of protesting the only (or so they are accusing) way NVIDIA really lets them, G80 users are trying to get enough research/evidence together to start a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA. Anyone who wants to help support this lawsuit, please visit NVidiaClassAction.org. NVIDIA Class Action wants evidence such as screen shots and box covers claiming Vista compatibility in some way.

The site motto is rather catchy.
The surprise we've all been waiting for - a $650 coaster.

NVIDIA still has a lot of work to do with DirectX10 driver for G80

G80 owners worldwide are probably wondering why they do not have even a beta driver for their high-end expensive graphics card. The reason is very simple: the driver is not stable. Games that are stable on any other video card using any other driver are great on Windows Vista. However, once the G80 was plugged in with the current driver, the test system was prone to frequent and unpredictable reboots. With Windows Vista launching in a matter of days, we sure hope NVIDIA can make a stable driver for the launch of Microsoft's brand new operating system.

Cheaper 8800GTS set for February

According to VR-Zone, NVIDIA are set to release cheaper versions of their latest card, the GeForce 8800, during mid February. Based on the same core as the 8800GTS, the cards will run at exactly the same speeds but will only have half the memory size, with 320MB instead of 640MB. Because it is essentially the same it is likely to still be called the 8800GTS, but with a $100 price cut on this less powerful version bringing it to $299, it should be more capable of fighting back ATI's 1950 cards price-wise. Hopefully NVIDA will release its Vista drivers soon so gamers can take a look at DirectX 10.

NVIDIA G80 Vista driver at the end of the month

NVIDIA's new DirectX10 cards should finally have the potential to take advantage of their new technology after an announcement by the company that it plans to release a Vista driver for the 8800 cards towards the end of January. Because these cards have so far been unable to run DirectX10 applications, their performance in this area has been a mystery, but hopefully this will begin the next generation of Windows based gaming. The G80 driver has suffered two month delays and this should hopefully satisfy those who purchased the cards wanting to be DirectX10 ready - although they will still have to wait for the games to be released before they can reap the benefits it has to offer.
