3DMark Gets AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) Feature Test

UL Benchmarks today released an update to 3DMark that adds a Feature Test for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2), the company's popular upscaling-based performance enhancement. This was long overdue, as 3DMark has had a Feature Test for DLSS for years now; and as of October 2022, it even got one for Intel XeSS. The new FSR 2 Feature Test uses a scene from the Speed Way DirectX 12 Ultimate benchmark, where it compares fine details of a vehicle and a technic droid between native resolution with TAA and FSR 2, and highlights the performance uplift. To use the feature test, you'll need any GPU that supports DirectX 12 and FSR 2 (that covers AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel Arc). For owners of 3DMark who purchased it before October 12, 2022, they'll need to purchase the Speed Way upgrade to unlock the AMD FSR feature test.

AMD FSR 3 FidelityFX Super Resolution Technology Unveiled at GDC 2023

AMD issued briefing material earlier this month, teasing an upcoming reveal of its next generation FidelityFX at GDC 2023. True to form, today the hardware specialist has announced that FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0 is incoming. The company is playing catch up with rival NVIDIA, who have already issued version 3.0 of its DLSS graphics enhancer/upscaler for a small number of games. AMD says that FSR 3.0 is in an early stage of development, but it is hoped that its work on temporal upscaling will result in a number of improvements over the previous generation.

The engineering team is aiming for a 2x frame performance improvement over the existing FSR 2.0 technique, which it claims is already capable of: "computing more pixels than we have samples in the current frame." This will be achieved by generating a greater number of pixels in a current frame, via the addition of interpolated frames. It is highly likely that the team will reach a point in development where one sample, at least, will be created for every interpolated pixel. The team wants to prevent feedback loops from occurring - an interpolated frame will only be shown once, and any interpolation artifact would only remain for one frame.

AMD FSR 2.2 for Unreal Engine now available on GPUOpen

Although it has already been available in some games, AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.2 is now available as an Unreal Plugin over on GPUOpen. AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 has been already used in some games ever since AMD released the source code for the technology, which includes the titles like Forza Horizon 5, Need For Speed Unbound, and F1 22, but implementation in various engines can take time, and now it is available as a plugin for Unreal Engine. AMD's FSR 2.2 brings several improvements including new logic that should reduce "High-Velocity Ghosting," an issue that usually plagues racing games. It also feature a new Debug API Checker, which should provide much easier debugging for developers.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 Unveiled with Several Upscaler Changes to Improve Realism

AMD late Thursday unveiled the FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 (FSR 2.1) performance enhancement, which builds on the performance-quality gains of FSR 2.0, while improving the visual fidelity and correcting several kinds of upscaling artifacts visible to the keen eye. To begin with, it corrected ghosting issues with geometry carrying motion vectors not matching the underlying pixel colors, which were causing a "shimmering" effect. There are also changes to the disocclusion logic that let it detect disocclusions in areas with little depth separating objects, which again should address some ghosting issues.

Upscaled output quality has been improved by turning some upscaler computations from FP16 to FP32 (full-precision), which should improve color range and temporal stability of the upscaled image. Ghosting issues on transparent geometry has also been improved by updates to the reactive mask. Ghosting issues on geometry with motion vectors not matching underlying pixel colors have been addressed with improvements to the composition and transparency mask. AMD detailed FSR 2.1 in its GPUOpen page, and has made the software available to game developers. Any game currently implementing FSR 2.0 can release FSR 2.1 support through patches. The latest version 1.7.1 patch of Farming Simulator 2022 implements FSR 2.1.
AMD also put together a video presentation with Farming Simulator 2022, highlighting the improvements made with FSR 2.1.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Gets Official AMD FSR 2.0 Support Months After a Community Mod adds it

The PC version of "Red Dead Redemption 2" received official support for the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) performance enhancement with the latest Version 1.31 patch. The game now supports FSR 2.0 as well as DLSS. The update also includes improvements to the temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) implementation in the PC version. The update comes two months following a community mod that added FSR 2.0 to the game unofficially, which required you to run the game with its DirectX 12 renderer, and add or replace certain game files. The official 1.31 patch adds FSR 2.0 support for both the DirectX 12 and Vulkan renderers. The 433 MB patch is being pushed through Steam.

Dying Light 2 Patch Adds AMD FSR 2.0 Support and Ray-Tracing Performance Improvements

The latest Community Update 1 patch of "Dying Light: Stay Human" adds support for the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) performance enhancement. This adds several more quality-performance presets that improve visuals over FSR 1.0 at a given frame-rate, or improve frame-rate at a given quality-level. The update also improves the game's memory-management of the GPU's video memory in DirectX 12 mode, which should benefit features such as real-time ray tracing. There are other minor fixes for SSAO and TAA temporal anti-aliasing.

AMD Launches FSR 2.0 Plugin for Unreal Engine 4 & 5

AMD has recently released two new plugins for Unreal Engine 4 and 5 that help developers easily add support for FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 to their games. The first FSR 2.0 games only started to arrive this month but with over 20 titles already announced to be receiving the technology we expect that this latest development will greatly increase that number. AMD joins NVIDIA in offering Unreal Engine plugins to simplify the implementation of their respective temporal upscaling solutions with AMD claiming that adding FSR 2.0 support only takes days for games that already use motion vectors. AMD has published developer guides on how to install and use the plugins on which can be found below.

AMD Releases FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 Source Code Through GPUOpen

Today marks a year since gamers could try out AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technology for themselves with our spatial upscaler - FSR 1. With the introduction of FSR 2, our temporal upscaling solution earlier this year, there are now over 110 games that support FSR. The rate of uptake has been very impressive - FSR is AMD's fastest adopted software gaming technology to date.

God of War Gets FSR 2.0 Support in Latest Patch

Sony today released the v1.0.2 patch for the PC release of "God of War," which adds support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0). The latest performance enhancement by AMD lets you experience even higher image quality at a set performance level, or higher performance at a set quality level. It leverages temporal data to add detail to upscaled images, and in our testing with other games, was found to offer comparable quality and performance to NVIDIA DLSS 2.0. The latest v1.0.2 patch for "God of War" is now up on Steam.

AMD Announces New Ultrathin Notebook Design Wins, New "Mendocino" Mobile Processor

AMD in its Computex 2022 presentation announced several design wins for its Ryzen 6000U line of high-performance processors for ultra-thin notebooks. With configurable TDPs of 15 W and 28 W, these processors feature an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 3" CPU, an iGPU with up to 12 RDNA2 compute units, and a modern I/O that combines DDR5 memory with PCI-Express Gen 4, to bring gaming to ultra-thin form-factors without the need for a discrete GPU. The iGPU meets DirectX 12 Ultimate feature requirements, and AMD leverages technologies such as FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), to further improve gaming performance.

Among the new design wins are the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED, a 13-inch ultra-thin weighing only 1 kg, and capable of average 60 FPS in "Godfall," taking advantage of FSR. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X is another notebook in this class capable of 1080p gaming, powered by the Ryzen 7 6800HS, with up to 122 FPS in CS:GO, up to 266 FPS in "League of Legends," up to 59 FPS in "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," up to 64 FPS in "Final Fantasy: XIV," and up to 46 FPS in "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided."

AMD Reveals More FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 Technical Details

AMD has recently shared some more technical information on their recently announced FidelityFX Super Resolution successor ahead of their GDC presentation. The GPUOpen developer website has been updated with new details regarding the various quality modes and implementation strategies available for FSR 2.0. AMD has confirmed that FSR 2.0 will work with graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA going back to the Pascal GTX 10 series in addition to the Xbox Series X/S.

The technology is similar to NVIDIA DLSS 2.0 in that they both use temporal upscaling however FSR 2.0 does not rely on Machine Learning which makes the technology easier to integrate and allows more devices to be supported. FSR 2.0 will feature four quality options with Quality, Balanced, and Performance in addition to the optional Ultra-Performance mode that developers can choose to add. AMD has also included support for Dynamic Resolution Scaling where the resolution can be automatically scaled to meet a minimum target frame rate.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) Unveiled

AMD today unveiled FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0), the second major update to the company's ambitious gaming performance enhancement that seeks to improve performance with minimal loss of image quality, by lowering game render resolution, and applying a high-quality upscaling algorithm. The star-attraction with FSR 2.0 is its new upscaling algorithm that leverages temporal data. Data from past generated frames is used to predict and add details to the current frame. This improves image quality across all presets of FSR, and at all resolutions. In some cases, the "Performance" preset of FSR 2.0 may end up looking on par with the "Quality" preset of FSR 1.0. AMD's temporal upscaling algorithm doesn't need any machine-learning hardware on the GPU.

AMD is working to integrate FSR 2.0 with several contemporary game engines, and titles that are both already released or in development. It seems like an upcoming patch of "Deathloop" will add FSR 2.0 support, since the company exclusively used the game in its image-quality comparison previews. AMD will deliver a more elaborate presentation, with an under-the-hood look at how FSR 2.0 works, in its GDC 2022 presentation slated for March 23, 2022. The company is looking to release FSR 2.0 to gamers within Q2-2022 (between April to June).

AMD Unveils Radeon Super Resolution, Brings Performance Improvements to Thousands of Games

AMD today introduced Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), a new performance enhancement feature that's designed to improve frame-rates of thousands of games, whether or not they feature support for it. Put simply, RSR is a high-quality upscaling algorithm derived from FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, which is located on the driver-side, rather than game-side. In games that support FSR, the 3D scene rendered at a lower resolution is put through the FSR upscaler algorithm before post-processing and HUD are applied to its result. RSR doesn't require game-level integration, because it requires the game to simply run at a lower resolution than the display's native resolution; so it could act like a high-quality image upscaling algorithm.

This means that thousands of games can benefit from RSR, as the feature is agnostic to what it's upscaling. There are a couple of wrinkles, though. First, you'll need a Radeon RX 5000 or RX 6000 series GPU, based on the RDNA or RDNA2 graphics architectures. The older "Vega" or "Polaris" architectures don't support it. "Vega" is still a current architecture, given that Ryzen 5000 series processors with Radeon Graphics, use a "Vega" based iGPU. The feature should, however, work with the RDNA2-based iGPU of the Ryzen 6000 "Rembrandt" processor. The second big catch is that since RSR comes later down the rendering pipeline than even HUD application, you may notice low-quality HUDs in some games—especially RTS or RPGs with large cluttered HUDs and inventory icons. RSR is being released through the AMD Software 22.3.1 update today.

AMD Set to Announce FSR 2.0 Featuring Temporal Upscaling on March 17th

AMD is preparing to announce their FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) successor tomorrow, on March 17th before a showcase of the technology at GDC 2022 as we previously reported on according to leaked slides obtained by VideoCardz. AMD FSR 2.0 will use temporal data and optimized anti-aliasing to improve image quality in all presents and resolutions compared to its predecessor making it a worthy component against NVIDIA DLSS 2.0. The slides also confirm that FSR 2.0 doesn't require dedicated machine learning hardware acceleration and will be compatible with a "wide range of products and platforms, both AMD and competitors".

The technology has been implemented in Deathloop where FSR 2.0 "Performance" mode with ray tracing increased frame rates from 53 FPS to 101 FPS compared to 4K native resolution with ray tracing. The slides do not reveal if AMD will make the source code for FSR 2.0 open-source as they have done for FSR and Intel is planning to do with XeSS. AMD is also expected to release Radeon Super Resolution which is an FSR driver implementation available for all games on March 17th.

AMD Potentially Preparing to Announce FSR 2.0 at GDC 2022

AMD is scheduled to hold an event discussing "Next-Generation Image Upscaling for Games" at the Game Developers Conference on March 23. The event only includes a brief description that "AMD will present some of the results of their research in the domain of next-generation image upscaling technology" but the developer of CapFrameX has recently claimed to see footage from FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 so AMD may be preparing to announce the technology imminently.

The developer claims that FSR 2.0 switches to a temporal upscaling approach with optimized anti-aliasing that doesn't require AI acceleration unlike DLSS & XeSS meaning that it can work with GPUs from multiple vendors. The technology can also allegedly improve image quality beyond native resolution but we will need to wait for the official announcement and reviews before reaching any conclusions.

MSI Launches the MAG Trident S 5M Desktop PC

MSI released a new gaming desktop, the MAG Trident S 5M, a machine dedicated to cloud gaming and mobile gaming. It is different from traditional gaming desktops and focuses more on helping gamers enjoy games in the living room. Gamers only need to activate the Android system emulator (MSI APP Player) and the 30-day free XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE through the Game Stadium software exclusively developed by MSI to control mobile games on the sofa with only one joystick. You can easily access cloud games and other entertainment software.

The exclusive MSI APP Player allows players to emulate the Android system in the Windows system. Gamers can experience mobile games on a larger screen with better performance. They can also use the Multi-Instance Manager function to open different games in different windows. Certain games can also enable joystick mode, allowing players to use the same joystick to play. AMD Radeon 680M (Ryzen 6000 "Rembrandt" iGPU) Proves its Mettle with Cyberpunk 2077

The Radeon 680M integrated graphics powering the AMD Ryzen 6000-series mobile processors is proving to be an entry-level discrete-GPU killer. TechEpiphany posted a video presentation showing the iGPU's real-world gameplay performance with the AAA title "Cyberpunk 2077" at Full HD (1080p), with a little help from FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). TechEpiphany used an ASUS TUF GAMING F17 notebook powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H "Rembrandt" processor that has the full Radeon 680M iGPU unlocked, with all its 12 RDNA2 compute units (768 stream processors), 12 Ray Accelerators, 16 ROPs, and 48 TMUs, enabled. The notebook also features a GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, but for this testing, it was disabled.

The first part of the video shows the game running at 1080p and Medium-High settings, with FSR set at Ultra Quality. Here, the iGPU is managing 30-40 FPS. Real-time ray tracing is disabled. In the second part, they enabled ray tracing and FidelityFX Super Resolution, but this is where the iGPU runs out of steam. Frame-rates drop to unplayable levels, but there still aren't any noticeable visual artifacts or rendering errors typically associated with iGPUs made to render games above their pay-grade. It's still impressive to see that AMD following through on its promise of bringing 1080p gaming across a broader range of titles.
