Intel Launches 13th Gen Core vPro Processors

Intel today expanded its 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" client processor family into the commercial segment. Devices in this segment are bought in bulk by large businesses and enterprises; the processors powering them have certain in-built device security and remote management features that enforce company policy regardless of where the employees take the devices. Intel has been pioneering hardware-level remote-management and device security features for close to two decades now, with its vPro feature-set (originally launched as Centrino vPro in the 2000s. The new 13th Gen Core vPro lineup covers popular processor models across various device form-factor classes, spanning ultraportables (15 W or below), thin-and-light commercial notebooks (28 W to 35 W segment); mainstream commercial notebooks (45 W to 55 W); and commercial desktops (65 W).

The 13th Gen vPro series have a lot in common with the 12th Gen Core vPro series, At a hardware-level, these are processors based on the same "Raptor Lake" silicon as the mainstream-client 13th Gen Core processors, but with the enhanced vPro Management Engine that interacts with a compatible operating system to offer endpoint remote manageability for administrators. The desktop versions of these chips have identical SKU differentiation to 65 W 13th Gen Core processors already launched, but with either vPro or vPro Essentials feature-sets. Something similar applies to the 15 W U-segment, 28 W P-segment, and 35-45 W H-segment Core vPro processors. Along with these processors, Intel is debuting Q700-series chipsets specific to the form-factor. For U- and P-segment mobile processor SKUs, the core-logic is part of the processor package; while the H-segment and S-segment (desktop) processors come with discrete chipsets. With the 13th Gen, Intel is also standardizing a new WiFi 6E (Gig+) WLAN chipset with vPro features.
13th Gen Core vPro features up to 8 "Raptor Cove" performance cores (or P-cores), and up to 16 "Gracemont" efficiency cores (or E-cores), depending on the form-factor, along with support for the latest platform I/O, including DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory standards, and PCI-Express Gen 5. Processors with vPro include VT-x and VT-d virtualization extensions, and Trusted Execution Technology, which enables a dynamic root of trust for software. Much like 12th Gen vPro chips, these include VT-rp, which provide hardware-acceleration for VT encryption processes. Part of the Q-series chipset feature-set are Intel Boot Guard and BIOS Guard, which offer a much more secured and enforced method of booting Windows than the basic Secure Boot. Intel Threat Detection and CET technologies accelerate various endpoint security solutions. The most sought after feature is still Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), which is used by administrators in large organize to remotely manage commercial desktops on office floors, and laptops handed out to employees for working from anywhere.

The Press Release follows:

Intel today introduced the new Intel vPro platform powered by the full lineup of 13th Gen Intel Core processors. Built for business, Intel vPro addresses the ever-changing needs of businesses by delivering the most comprehensive security, necessary hardware for companies in need of a PC refresh and increased productivity for all employees. This year, the expansive commercial portfolio will deliver more than 170 notebooks, desktops and entry workstations from partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Samsung.

"For nearly two decades, we've been committed to our mission of delivering products and technologies that keep organizations running and workers productive. With our new 13th Gen Intel Core processors, the Intel vPro platform remains the premier business computing foundation, providing the best in security, business management and performance for organizations of all sizes," said Stephanie Hallford, Intel vice president and general manager of the Commercial Client Division.

Intel's new vPro platform offers critical threat prevention with dozens of security capabilities built deep in the silicon - helping reduce attack surface by an estimated 70% versus 4-year-old PCs. New IT-enabled memory encryption will also take virtualization-based security to a game-changing level in Windows. Customers will have more choice with endpoint detection and response (EDR) vendors enabled with Intel Threat Detection Technology, bringing higher-efficacy detection of the latest threats. And as the only business platform with all of this and built-in hardware security to detect ransomware and software supply chain attacks, Intel vPro has the most comprehensive security offering in the industry.

The new vPro platform is based on the 13th Gen Intel Core processors offering a hybrid architecture with new Performance-cores, more Efficient-cores on select offerings, smarter task classification with Intel Thread Director and better energy efficiency with Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology. Coupled with leading technologies like Intel Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+), Thunderbolt 4 and the validation of the Intel Evo platform with superior experiences like intelligent collaboration, Intel vPro devices are optimized for modern business computing.

Performance improvements for Intel vPro designs with 13th Gen Intel Core include:
  • Up to 65% faster Windows application performance versus 3-year-old desktop PC.
  • Up to 45% faster content creation while multitasking than a current AMD desktop.
  • Up to 2.3 times faster Windows application performance versus 3-year-old mobile PC.
  • Up to 40% faster Windows application performance versus a current AMD notebook and up to 25% faster business application performance versus Apple M2.
  • Up to 58% faster report generation while collaborating than a current AMD notebook.
For edge application developers, 13th Gen Intel Core processors on Intel vPro platforms provide edge processing performance, remote device manageability, powerful security tools and much more to unleash the power of their data. They are ideal for applications in retail, banking, hospitality, education, healthcare, manufacturing and others.

According to a recent report from IDC, Intel-based Windows PCs have a 26% lower risk of major PC-related security events compared to other Windows PCs. In today's business climate, refreshing to the latest hardware is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Companies of all sizes are fighting to better defend against the latest security threats, improve employee productivity and enable optimal experiences like videoconferencing.

With the introduction of Intel vPro Enterprise and Intel vPro Essentials last year, Intel technologies are accessible to users and organizations of all sizes. Today, a small or medium-size business, large enterprise, public sector organization or academic institution can acquire the right set of Intel vPro capabilities to deliver the best computing foundation for their unique needs.
