Anyway, show me a couple nice performing ITX or m-ATX boards and I'll be interested.
If you hit up the source link on the main page of TPU, you get to the product portal for all the new boards. Most of the boards have full specs posted already.
This doesn't bode well for Thunderbolt 5.

Nice to finally see a semi decent mATX option too, will get one if it turns out to be the best option.
AMD has done itself a disservice by not adding USB4 to the IOD, but making an ASM4242-controller mandatory on X870(E), sacrifcing 4 Gen5-lanes from CPU. AM5 is theoretically still much better suited for heavy SSD-use, since one can attach up to 6 Gen5-SSD to the CPU and put them in RAID-mode (now even RAID5), but almost no board makes this possible. Much more X870(E)-boards offer the possibility to sacrifice 8 Lanes Gen5 from x16-slot for two additional M.2, but they always lose 4 Lanes for USB4. What does that even mean? TB4 comes from CPU on this platform and should have nothing to do with PCIe-lanes.
Aero G and Xtreme AI Top have TB5-controllers onboard by the way.
For the CPU, it got way more though, I would say it's a bit more than just mild, and I don't think it's mild. LGA 1700 had 16 lanes of Gen 5 and 4 lanes of Gen 4(not counting chipset lanes), while it's now going to have 20 lanes of Gen 5(16+4), 4 lanes of Gen 4 and 2 TB4.
If all you care about is IO then it seems like Intel offers a considerably better platform than AM5.
Though your mileage will vary a lot as not all Z890-implement the TB4s ports or it might be just one of them or the chipset lanes to other things like PCIe slots or nvme.
And it's probably going to be extremely overpriced. I am betting it's more expensive than AM5 stuff.
Since the manuals aren't up yet, it's not possible to check what the exact limitations are. Some early pricing leaks, starts at €330 for a basic board.

Still on 2.5Gbps LAN, even if it's dual 2.5 :slap:
That makes no sense at all. Z890 has zero PCIe 3.0 lanes, loads of typos and mistakes in the Gigabyte specs.

The Gigabyte Z890M Gaming X Rear IO is only 4x USB 2 and 3x USB 3 5gbps. For €330 or so, that is kinda horrible for such a basic board. I guess this is PCIe cost. From:

It only states that it has 24 Gen 4 lanes. Which I assume is the upgrade from Z690/Z790 as otherwise everything seems to be more or less the same.
USB3.2 and SATA is directly from the chipset, it doesn't need to use PCIe lanes to implement it. Unless the lanes are multiplexed with USB/SATA. This happens in some case but not all.
2.5GbE and Wifi should only consume a single lane each, and that is if the wifi doesn`t use the Intel CNVIo which doesn`t connect by PCIe.
