Intel Nehalem, Bloomsfield CPU and Tylersberg Chipset Close-up Before Computex 2008

When it comes to hot news from MSI, my favourite source has always been bit-tech.net. These guys have some very good connections with MSI. Now a week before Computex 2008, they have convinced MSI to let them get a close-up look at Intel's next generation Nehalem architecture, which is based on the Bloomsfield CPU platform and Tylersberg chipset also known under the X58 nomenclature. The following pictures show a 1366-pin quad-core Bloomsfield CPU (no model and specs for now) with HT support and integrated DDR3 memory controller. All Bloomsfield processors will require a new cooling. Regular LGA775 coolers won't fit. The Tylersberg X58 motherboard made by MSI has six DDR3 memory slots. Six becuase you'll need a minimum of three DDR3 DIMMs to run in triple-channel mode. The chipset also features 36 lanes of PCI-Express 2.0, so you'll get a full x16 by x16 for at least two video card slots. The south bridge used with Tylersber is still ICH10, so don't expect extraordinary features when it comes to the number of SATA or USB 2.0 ports. Check out the rest of the pictures by the author Richard Swinburne over at bit-tech.net.

Seagate Plans to Release Enterprise SSDs and 2TB Hard Drive for Next Year

Seagate CEO Bill Watkins, outlined yesterday that his company won't release any solid state drives until next year. "SSDs are not price-competitive yet," Watkins said. First Seagate SSDs will start to appear as late as next year, and target only enterprise market. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers because of the high prices and other problems that still part solid state drives from conventional hard disks. "If the cost per gigabyte comes down to 10 cents, maybe," Seagate will focus on SSD storage for consumers, Watkins said. But "It will take three to four years for SSDs to come to parity with hard drives," he thinks. In related news, Bill Watkins also announced plans to introduce 2TB conventional hard drive next year. The exact release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive is still distant though.

University of Antwerp Makes 4k € Supercomputer with Four GeForce 9800 GX2 Cards

Have you ever thought that gaming parts like NVIDIA's GeForce 9800 GTX video cards for instance, can be used for building a supercomputer. Maybe no, but researchers at the University of Antwerp in Belgium have proven that it's possible to build one. Using four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards, AMD Phenom 9850 processor, 4x2GB Corsair Twinx DDR2 PC6400 memory and MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard, FASTRA costs less than 4000EUR to build and thanks to NVIDIA's CUDA technology and delivers roughly the same performance as a supercomputer cluster consisting of hundreds of PCs. This new system is used by the ASTRA research group, part of the Vision Lab of the University of Antwerp, to develop new computational methods for tomography. Tomography is a technique used in medical scanners to create three-dimensional images of the internal organs of patients, based on a large number of X-ray photos that are acquired over a range of angles. ASTRA develops new reconstruction techniques that lead to better reconstruction quality than classical methods. You can read more about the FASTRA GPU SuperPC project over here.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) May Hike High-End Chip Prices

Top contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) said on Tuesday it may start charging more for its higher-end chips as a result of the higher production costs, inflation and oil prices. "Average selling prices have been falling and profits have been under pressure, and we have to work together to create value," Jason Chen, a company vice president in charge of global sales and marketing, told a TSMC technology symposium. He specified that price changes would be mostly for chips made by advanced process technology, but did not say how big they would be or when they would occur. It's also unclear whether this will reflect on prices of the next generation NVIDIA video cards. As you may know, TSMC currently produces most of the GeForce graphics processors. "We face some structural profit pressure. In the short term, we also face pressure from inflation and oil prices," Chen said. Continue reading the full story here.

Intel ''Montevina'' Centrino 2 Platform Delayed by Couple of Weeks

Chip maker Intel will delay the introduction of its highly anticipated "Montevina" platform referred to as Centrino 2 due to technical and certification problems, the chipmaker said Tuesday. The initial rollout scheduled to take place after Computex and until July 14 is not going to happen. Instead, the release date has been pushed back by one month to August 2008. The problems behind this delay include the certification of the Wi-Fi wireless standard and technical issues with the Centrino 2 integrated graphics chipset, which is causing random failures. Because of that Intel will launch only the Centrino 2 CPUs and some of its chipsets on July 14th. The Centrino 2 processors will include the "T" and "X" (Extreme) models. Other parts of the new Montevina platform as well as the faulty chipsets will need to be rechecked, causing this delay to prolong to a month. "Initially what will be available on July 14 are the (Centrino 2) processors and some of the chipsets," Intel spokesperson Connie Brown said.

Universal abit Denies Claims That it is Leaving the Motherboard Business

Universal abit representatives today said that the company is not going to leave the motherboard arena and DigiTimes rumors are not to be believed. Thore Welling, Universal ABIT Global Marketing Director pointed out:
abit is a well established and strong brand within the enthusiast and high-end motherboard and components industry. In fact, particularly over the past 12 months we have been able to considerably increase market share not only in traditional markets such as Western Europe, but even stronger so in emerging markets such as East Asia as well as in the Middle East. Therefore, the broadening of our product lines into the Consumer Electronics (digital photo frames with integrated photo printer [FunFab] and MIDs) segment represents a stronger commitment to the overall brand and the continuation of our motherboard concept into other products. abit stays committed to motherboards and has a broad lineup of motherboards ready, as you will see in during Computex.

Universal abit Reportedly to Leave the Motherboard Market?

DigiTimes is reporting that Universal abit may abandon the motherboard business after evaluating the success of its upcoming Intel 4 series lineup of motherboards.
Abit's has failed to meet the expectations of parent company Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) in its ability to compete with fellow second-teir makers in terms of performance, or first-tier makers in terms of pricing in the mid-range and entry-level market, and so the company is evaluating whether to quit the market and start developing other products for the Abit brand, noted the sources.

In 2007, Abit shipped 2-3 million motherboards and had set a goal to ship six million units in 2008. However, the company's current shipments have actually decreased. Abit will determine whether to stay in the market after evaluating its shipments performance of P45-based motherboards, added the sources.

Targeting business and consumber markets, Puma will be used in all major notebook form factors with 12.1-inch 13.3-inch, 15.4-inch and 17-inch displays. Discrete graphics options for the Puma platform will include ATI Mobility Radeon 3450, 3650 and 3850 graphics chips. Solid State Drives will also be available as an option, but since Puma is not targeted at the extreme laptop offerings, SSDs will be put aside. There's no information whether Puma and Turion Ultra will be available in volume from day one of its introduction. More information will follow after the start of Computex 2008.

Windows Vista UAC 'Nails' Rootkits

Most would agree that Windows Vista's most obvious security feature, UAC, which asks a user for confirmation every time the computer decides to perform an administrative task, can become quite annoying. However, past whatever annoyance a user might perceive, it does have some very useful features. When a security firm pitted seven anti-virus suites against roughly 30 rootkit infections. Unfortunately, none of the programs found all of the rootkits. However, when tested on a Vista platform, Windows Vista's UAC actually prevented the rootkits from getting terribly mangled into the system, which made removal and detection a little easier. If nothing else, UAC kept the system more stable while the rootkit did its thing, and prevented a lot of damage from happening. In fact, when the security firm pitted the rootkit against Windows Vista UAC by itself, all of the rootkits were stopped right in their tracks.

Survey Says: Internet Users Selfish, Impatient

Every once in a while, a market research group or two will bother to determine just how the general populace of the internet will respond to certain types of media. This most recent market research shows that most people using the internet are more likely to possess the qualities of an ADHD riddled 5 year old, and only spend a few minutes on a web page before switching tasks. This does not help advertisers, who would rather users take a slow, mellow approach to the internet, and notice all the subtle nuances embedded in the website designed around making the user buy some trinket or another. Instead, they have to deal with a crowd that is suspicious of anything that tries to get the user to spend more than the absolute minimum required time looking at a web page. The conclusion to this study said that most web page authors really ought to keep fancy widgets to themselves, and merely facilitate what the user is really trying to do, whatever that may be.

Nintendo Wii Selling Extremely Well in Korea

It would seem as though some countries have yet to even see the Nintendo Wii in store shelves. Stores in Korea began receiving the hip Nintendo console just last month, and so far, sales have been through the roof. Nintendo unleashed the Wii as a way to promote a profitable gaming industry in Korea. This was in spite of concerns that the high amount of piracy that occurs in Korea would negate the majority of profits Nintendo would earn in the country. In fact, that alone prevented Nintendo from releasing the Wii any earlier than April 26, 2008. While piracy data is still inconclusive regarding the Nintendo Wii in South Korea, retailers have managed to sell 35,000 of the 50,000 Nintendo Wii's that made their way to store shelves.

Travagans Colors Portable Headphone Amp Review

Travagans Colors Portable Headphone Amp Review

Travagan's Colors is the name of a brand new portable headphone amplifier. It is much smaller than most normal portable amps and only costs $59. The design is quite outlandish since it resembles a dog bone. The question is of course how does this little thing stack up against some of the bigger portable headphone amps.

Age of Conan MMORPG Attracts 400k Gamers in First Week

It would seem as though World of Warcraft finally has some competition when it comes to the very lucrative and addicting MMORPG enterprise. Since last Tuesday, over 400,000 MMORPG gamers have signed up for Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, nearly half of which come from North America. This is quite significant for a game that's been on "the development backburner" for quite some time now. Even more interesting is that this game is pay-to-play, much like Blizzard competitor World of Warcraft. Whether or not this "savage, sexy and brutal MMO(RPG)" will be a long-term contender is yet to be seen. Whether or not the very strong Age of Conan fanbase comes through with a World of Warcraft killer, only time will tell. We'll keep you posted.

RIAA Drops Charges Against AllofMP3

A Russian music downloading site/store used to sell music and did not give any money to the actual recording studios artists. And so, the RIAA sued. AllofMP3 changed their ways, was declared legal, and the smug RIAA gave AllofMP3 a pat on the back and sent it on its merry way. What's the news story here? The news story is in what AllofMP3 left behind. When AllofMP3 went on the long journey to becoming legal, what made it illegal spread around to several websites and shady music stores. And so, while the RIAA can claim victory over one site, they really haven't accomplished much at all, other than making software pirates more determined than ever before.

SuperPi Coming to Graphics Cards

Despite the infamous SuperPi application being criticized as being "very simple, and horribly single-threaded", it is a very popular benchmarking application. And it has been quite the benchmark tool to measure just how amazing a certain persons CPU is. However, all that is about to change. A strain of SuperPi is coming that will allow SuperPi calculations to be carried out by the graphics processor. This new code, which will be helped out by CUDA, should be available in about one month's time.

4870X2 to be Released in Q2 2008, Will be Cheaper Than GTX280

I'm sure all of you guys know all the goodies that will be coming with the launch of the next series of high-end cards from AMD. In case you need a recap of the awesomeness headed our way, please check out the source link. Anyways, enough propoganda. For those of you who are interested in buying the latest high-end offerings from AMD, the current rumor says that we should see new cards in August 2008 for a price far below the current rumored prices of the high-end NVIDIA cards. NVIDIA cards have traditionally been more expensive, and the GTX280 is supposedly going to cost nerds somewhere in the ballpark of $500USD. There is no confirmed pricepoint for the new cards from AMD. However, we can be fairly confident that it will be quite a bit less than $500USD. Another interesting rumor to note is that there will be a much larger difference between the HD4870 and the HD4850, as opposed to the comparatively small difference between the HD3870 and the HD3850.

ASUS to Release EeePC as Desktop, Will Call it Ebox

ASUS' plans to release a desktop version of the Eeepc have been known for quite some time now. However, that's all we really did know. Now, we can confirm that at least ASUS decided to name the desktop version of their fairly successful little laptop. ASUS has decided to call it the Ebox. Said Ebox will look suspiciously like a Nintendo Wii, but will be much more like a computer. We can also confirm that the Ebox will have up to 2GB of RAM, up to 160GB of hard drive space and a slot-loaded optical drive. Current rumor has it that this machine will be powered by the diminutive Intel Diamondville motherboard family. ASUS is expected to unveil more details on the Ebox when they launch it on June 3rd at Computex 2008. It should cost somewhere in the ballpark of $200-$300USD.

First ATI Radeon HD 4870 and HD 4850 Pictures Emerge

The Taiwanese website version of Tom's Hardware is hosting a brand new first look at ATI's Radeon HD 4800 series cards. Unfortunately, if you want to read something more than the posted pictures and the "Redefine HD Gaming" marketing charts, you'll need someone or Google to translate from Taiwanese for you, as you might have already guessed. What's interesting are the pictures below, that show the upcoming cards in all their glory. They also confirm our previous story about the cooling solutions that will be used on both cards. The first card pictured is ATI Radeon HD 4870, the second one is Radeon HD 4850.

The heatsink consists of 102 fins, 8 heatpipes, 120mm PWM controlled fan, and design that resemble the beloved Tuniq- Tower 120 cooler. The fan itself spins from 800 rpm to 1500 rpm, while keeping the air flow up to 60.7 m3/h at max rpm. Arcic Cooling also supplies the cooler with their high-performance MX-2 thermal compound. The cooler weights in 608 g and can be mounted on both Intel Socket 775 and AMD Socket AM2+, AM2 and 939 motherboards. The Freezer Xtreme is offered with a 6-year limited warranty. It will be available in July 2008. The MSRP is US$39.95 or 25.95€.

Next-gen NVIDIA GeForce Specs Unveiled, Part 2

Although it's a bit risky to post information taken from unknown for me sources, not to mention that the site is German, it's worth trying. The guys over at Gamezoom (Google translated) reported yesterday that during NVIDIA's Editors Day, the same place where the F@H project for NVIDIA cards and the buyout of RayScale were announced, NVIDIA has also unveiled the final specs for its soon to be released GT200 cards. This information comes to complement our previous Next-gen NVIDIA GeForce Specs Unveiled story:
  • GeForce GTX 280 will feature 602MHz/1296MHz/1107MHz core/shader/memory clocks, 240 stream processors, 512-bit memory interface, and GDDR3 memory as already mentioned.
  • GeForce GTX 260 will come with 576MHz/999MHz/896MHz reference clock speeds, 192 stream processors, 448-bit memory interface and GDDR3 memory
The prices are 449 U.S. dollars for the GTX 260 and more than 600$ for the GeForce 280 GTX. That's all for now.

Samsung to Launch Super Fast 256GB SSD Later This Year

Samsung late on Sunday announced definite plans to launch a breathtakingly fast flash memory-based solid-state disk that's also world's first to boast a 256GB capacity. Samsung's multi-level cell (MLC) based SSD, which was unveiled in prototype form during the company's fifth annual Mobile Solution Forum event in Taipei, has a 2.5-inch form factor and SATA 3.0 Gbps interface. It is only 9.5 mm thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm. Sequential read/write speeds for this drive are also something that's worth noting: 200MB/s read and 160MB/s write, or roughly 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD. In addition, the drive offers a sophisticated data encryption process that prevents data stored on the SSD from being accessed in an unauthorized manner, even after the SSD is removed from the PC. Samples of the drive will be available to customers from September with mass production due by the end of the year. A smaller 1.8-inch version of the 256GB SSD is also expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

Facebook Gives Users Commission to Become Salespeople; Spam Friends.

While a fair amount of Facebook users called it quits when they became sick of getting 10 emails every day begging said user to become a vampire or whatnot, it seems that Facebook users face a new issue. A new Facebook application, "affiliate window", allows users to earn a 1-5% commission whenever they sell various goods to their friends using the application. Any money made by Facebook entrepreneurs is placed directly in the Paypal account of the entrepreneur earning the commission. While the application author believes that he has created a side income for teenagers while getting sales for larger companies around the world, he may have just given users another reason to abandon their Facebook accounts.

New NVIDIA GeForce GTX280 Three Times Faster than HD 3870 in Folding@Home

Just a couple days ago, we informed you that NVIDIA had joined the Folding@Home team. However, at the time, benchmarks for this new client were unavailable. I am now happy to inform you that (internal) benchmarks are available for your viewing pleasure. The rather large green bar was achieved using the new NVIDIA GPU core, the GTX280. As far as exact numbers go, this sucker can fold at 500 mol/day, which is much higher than the Radeon HD 3870 numbers (170 mol/day), five times higher than PS3 numbers (100 mol/day), and astronomically higher than the average computer numbers (4 mol/day). Whether or not this translates into actual gaming performance is yet to be seen, however, it's pretty hard to imagine how something so powerful wouldn't bring back some respectable FPS in games like Crysis.

Wine 1.0 Release Candidate 2 Available for Download

Linux and Unix owners already know and love Wine. No, silly, not the red/white alcoholic beverage, the program. Wine, which has been in development for some time, is a program that allows Linux and Unix users to run Windows applications in a Linux/Unix environment. Wine is getting ever closer to a final version, and this Release Candidate 2 shows this in the list of changes. All that the authors changed from RC1 to RC2 is a list of bugfixes, which can be found here. If you'd like to download the latest version of this revolutionary program, you can check it out here.

Apple Shows Strong Growth, Captures 2/3 of Expensive PC Market

Despite all the criticism Apple has gotten throughout the years, they seem to be doing pretty well for themselves. While the United States has economic issues that might otherwise prevent an investment in expensive technology, and the rest of the world becomes more eco-friendly, Apple is happy and/or smug to report that two out of three pre-built computers that cost $1k or more were built by Apple. Even in the market that isn't tres-chic, Apple is doing very well for themselves, boasting a 14% market share in all computers sold in Q1 2008. According to the vice president of analyst firm NPD, the sales of Apple computers are about as likely to decline as oil prices. "In notebooks [Apple is] growing two times the market; Windows notebooks are pretty much flat right now. IMacs are growing and the Windows desktop ain't. No matter how you look at it, Apple is outperforming Windows."

Technology Analyst: Get Over Vista Hate

A reporter and technology analyst for the Washington Post recently took a rather strong point of view regarding Windows Vista and XP. He accepts that Vista has it's flaws, such as "steep hardware requirements, its strict anti-piracy measures, its sometimes-intrusive security measures, its incompatibility with some older products." However, he points out that the current market behavior, which is something along the lines of "don't upgrade until Vista gets better, and beg to keep XP on shelves" is not doing Vista or Microsoft any good. He points out that XP is not a historic monument in need of preservation, and is more like an old car: it's had a good run, but in view of some XP flaws when compared to Vista strongpoints, it's time to move on. The analyst also pointed out that fundamental supply/demand economics is keeping Vista from rising to greatness. As long as the market holds on to XP, and refuses to move on to Vista, software makers will not see a very good reason to adopt or support Vista, which causes most of the problems Vista has today. You can read more details at the source link.

Microsoft Challenges Console Competition to Sell 100 Million Units

Most of the time, the console war winner is decided as soon as a company sells 10 million units of their console. With NPD data consistently showing a high demand for the Nintendo Wii, most would agree that Nintendo has already won. By the 10-million-to-win rule, Nintendo won several months ago. At present, Nintendo has sold around 25 million units around the world. Microsoft has sold 19 million Xbox360's, and Sony has sold 12 million PS3's. However, Microsoft refuses to go down without a fight. Microsoft instead set a new competition, and wants to see who can sell 100 million units first. Microsoft feels that they have a superior product, which will inherently shine as time goes on. However, with grocery, gas, and mortgage prices quickly approaching the cost of gaming, the lower initial cost of the Nintendo Wii just might cinch the console war in Nintendo's favor. We shall see.

Programming Error Made Years Ago turns Open Source Software into Ticking Time Bomb

When open source software makers made what would eventually become the more current versions of Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X, they undertook a very important task: ensuring that whenever a password was generated to keep confidential data secret, that it would actually be secure. However, they apparently made a rudimentary programming error, and it went out into the world of open source software unnoticed. A couple years down the road, some hackers pointed out with glee that the OpenSSL key generator is basically useless as a security measure (the actual flaw is explained much more thoroughly in the source link). Because OpenSSL is used in far more systems than a couple home servers, we have a serious problem on our hands. Even though the original authors have issued a patch, there's no guarantee that it will get around fast enough to prevent some serious damage.

Blizzard Unveils One More StarCraft II Zerg Unit, the baneling

Blizzard today unveiled a new zerg unit, that will take place in the next StarCraft strategy game. Meet the baneling:
The baneling is a creature so bloated with fluid-filled sacs that it can barely walk; instead, it moves itself by tucking into a tight ball and rolling. However, this ungainly appearance belies the fact that the baneling is an extremely dangerous organism, one of several new zerg specialists recently seen on the battlefield. When a baneling gets close enough to an enemy, the creature triggers a reaction within its volatile chemical payload that causes it to explode with devastating force and shower the immediate surroundings with searing acid.
Blizzard has also added seven new in-game screenshots.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Coming Soon

Microsoft has detailed plans to update its Windows Home Server OS with the release of Power Pack 1. Coming soon, most notably the first Power Pack for Home Server will fix the corruption issues that have plagued the OS since its release. The flaw has been acknowledged by Microsoft for some time now, but until now nothing major has been done.
Due to the nature of the shared folder data corruption bug (KB #946676) a broad beta test program with sufficient time for feedback is required. The time line for a final release will depend on this feedback and testing, in order to deliver a fix of the highest quality. To meet our goals for the beta test we need the number of beta testers who are actively using and testing the Power Pack 1 beta to ramp up very quickly
Microsoft issued this statement to all Windows Home Server users. If you want to participate in the Power Pack 1 beta process, head on over to the Microsoft Home Server website.

Man & Machine, a Landover, Md., maker of medical keyboards and computer peripherals, said on Tuesday it has filed a trademark-infringement lawsuit against Apple and CBS over the Mighty Mouse name. The company says that it has been selling its Mighty Mouse, "a waterproof optical mouse for medical, industrial, and marine applications," since March 2004. Apple began selling its wired and wireless Mighty Mouse for MAC PCs in August 2005. "This action arises from Apple's use and proposed continued use of the trademark 'Mighty Mouse' in violation of M&M's rights in its own 'Mighty Mouse' trademark," the complaint states. "Apple's use of the 'Mighty Mouse' trademark takes place under color of an agreement with CBS purporting to license such use." M&M is seeking undisclosed damages and a court order preventing Apple from using the name Mighty Mouse for its mice.

ASUS Official Response on GIGABYTE Faulty Claims

ASUS today issued a statement in regard to the GIGABYTE claims posted here.
It has come to our attention that a certain Taiwanese Motherboard Manufacturer has made false claims against ASUS motherboards. These claims have given rise to false information being communicated in both the mainstream media and technology channels. ASUS wishes to clarify the issues and so avoid any further confusion. After investigation, it is clear that this company in question made use of a sponsored gathering of local and international media to deliberately spread information that we consider both untrue and without credible verification. This "disinformation" is not only extremely damaging to ASUS but also completely misleading to the consumers.

ASUS reserves the right to take legal action against any individual, organization or corporation which creates or spreads such rumors.

It might look like a regular shiny-white Eee PC 900, but if you take a closer look you'll find some subtle design changes. If we assume that the pictures posted by the French site blogeee.net are accurate, the Eee 901 will be sleeker and more stylish than the original. The noteworthy changes include a redesigned trackpad, the missing ASUS logo and the changed power button position. The computer is expected to be showcased at the Computex 2008 exhibition next month, where Intel is also expected to roll out its Atom CPUs.

ATI RV770 Chip Availability and Release Dates

The guys over at VR-Zone have learned some new information about the ATI RV770 chips, and apparently they want to share it with everyone:
AMD has just confirmed the marketing name for RV770 yesterday which is no surprise to anyone, the Radeon HD 4800 series. RV770PRO is Radeon HD 4850, RV770XT is Radeon HD 4870 and R700 is Radeon HD 4870 X2. AMD will be shipping RV770 GPUs to AIB by end of this month and you can expect different card designs from the manufacturers at launch. GIGABYTE: ASUS Lied and Fooled Customers

I will finish my day reporting a story published by Tom's Hardware that involves two big motherboard manufacturers - GIGABYTE and ASUS. According to GIGABYTE's technical team, ASUS is lying about its EPU (Energy Processing Unit) energy efficiency performance figures and is playing tricks with its users. ASUS claims that EPU outfitted motherboards can deliver up to 80.23% "power savings" from motherboards without EPU components. Yea, but that's not what GIGABYTE thinks. Test results from GIGABYTE's lab show that the claimed 80% energy efficiency is around 58.6% in reality, and ASUS is "playing numbers marketing" and "cheating end users." GIGABYTE engineers continued: "We found that [Asus'] EPU in 4 phase mode CAN NOT act PWM phase changing while Asus still claims EPU is a hardware based energy saving chip. Don't get fooled. The EPU (AIGear3+) is pure software based, not hardware!" "How can you believe it? Everything [Asus] say are lies," they added. GIGABYTE even pointed out that ASUS motherboards use poor quality non-Japanese solid capacitors. Read the full story here.

Dell: Alienware, XPS will Coexist

In a statement issued on late Tuesday, Dell denied yesterday's report from the Wall Street Journal, that claimed the company was dropping its XPS gaming systems in flavour of Alienware. "Dell XPS and Alienware are both great brands...and both will live on," Dell's spokeswoman Anne Camden said in a blog. "But we are going to expand our focus on Alienware. We are going to invest like crazy in product development, design, and engineering to propel Alienware as the premier gaming brand in the future."
"XPS gaming systems will remain an important part of our gaming product portfolio. We don't plan an early phase-out of these systems, as the WSJ incorrectly stated, and in fact will continue to refresh them to keep them on the front edge of gaming," Camden added.

Eurocom Lets Loose D901C Phantom-X 'Server' Laptop

Eurocom has launched the D901C Phantom-X laptop, a piece of machinery you don't see every day. It is no accident that the word server is being used in the title. The Phantom-X can be configured with a server based Intel Xeon X3360 quad-core chip running at 2.83GHz (45nm, 12MB of L2 cache), 17-inch 1920x1200 display, a 2x Blu-ray burner, up to 8GB DDR2-800 of RAM, a pair of GeForce 8800M Go GTX graphics chips, three 64GB solid state disk drives (each one of these adds around $1400 to the price a piece), as well as Windows Server 2008 OS. The overall price of the laptop with all optional parts maxed out is roughly $10 000, not a bad deal for a laptop (joke). If you ask about the battery life, it's a twelve cell Lithium Ion one that will power the laptop for an hour. So if you're looking for the ultimate laptop this is probably the best one you can find. An updated model that will have the physical space to integrate up to six hard drives for up to 3TB of storage space is also planned for September.

AMD Planning to Outsource CPU Production to TSMC

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) might be planning to outsource some of its CPU production to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) in the second half of the this year it was reported today. This move will help AMD to clear some of its manufacturing equipment and help lower the company's operating costs.
Although Hector Ruiz, CEO of AMD did not mention any plans to outsource production during the company's recent investors conference, the industry sources revealed that TSMC has already started testing procedures for a SOI manufacturing process in order to land manufacturing orders for AMD's Fusion CPUs. The increase in outsourcing could allow AMD to sell off some of its manufacturing equipment and help lower the company's operating costs, noted sources at AMD's partners. AMD's current goals are to return to profitability in the first half of 2009 and to grab back a 30% worldwide market share by the second quarter in 2009, noted the sources.

Dell Dropping Four XPS Gaming PCs, Focusing on Alienware

In a rather unexpected move, Dell said in front of the Wall Street Journal that as of next month it will be dropping four models of its XPS performance line-up and most likely start to push performance PCs from Alienware. Dell purchased Alienware back in 2006, and since then it hasn't been much around trying to help Alienware shine with its high-end gaming Aurora systems. This move is something new, and might try to fix this from now on. Alienware is also expected to bring out new redesigned systems based on new materials soon, according to the report. If you are subscribed to the WSJ, you can read the full story here.

Overclocking on Intel P45 Motherboards is Harder Than you Might Think

Some of you waiting for Intel P45 might consider this article rather interesting. After spending some time talking in depth to a couple of MSI's P45 engineers and Tony Leach from OCZ Technology, the guys over at bit-tech.net reported that Intel P45 motherboards will be more complex for overclocking than current mainstream motherboards. With Intel P45 you'll need to spend extra time learning how to fine tweak settings like GTL Reference Voltages, CPU VTT and its relation to GTLs, Clock Skews, CPU PLL Voltages typically available only in current high-end X48 chipsets.
Overclocking Intel's P45 is said to be more complex than it has been on previous boards - you're going to need to do a lot of specialist fine tuning. After spending time today talking in depth to a couple of MSI's P45 engineers and considerably more to Tony Leach from OCZ Technology, who spends a lot of time QAing BIOSes for companies like Asus, DFI and MSI, it looks like overclocking is going to become an increasingly more complicated art with the release of Intel's P45 chipset, as it mirrors many of the tweaks the current high-end X48 chipset offers.

Intel Reportedly Gains SSD Orders from Google

Digitimes reports that Intel gained SSD orders from Google for some of their US servers according to unspecified sources. The widespread integration of NAND flash memory will likely quicken the price drop of consumer SSDs.
Google plans to switch some of its servers over to solid-state drive-based (SSD-based) storage supplied by Intel in order to lower electricity consumption, according to sources at memory makers. The more power efficient SSDs will be installed at severs at Google's US headquarters. Intel will supply flash chips and Marvell the corresponding controller ICs, the sources detailed. Shipments are slated for late second quarter, they added. With the increasing use of SSDs in server applications, a shortage for 16Gb and 32Gb NAND flash chips could become a possibility, the sources commented.

Microsoft Appeals Against the Record 899 Mln Euro EU Fine

Microsoft spokesman Jesse Verstraete announced it was appealing against the record 899 million euro ($1.39 billion) fine imposed by the European Commission for not providing key code to rival software makers and prolonged misbehaviour allegations. "Microsoft today filed to the (EU) Court of First Instance an application to annul the European Commission decision of February 27," the U.S. software giant said in a late Friday mail. "We are filing this appeal in a constructive effort to seek clarity from the court," it said. Microsoft has been fined a total of 1.68 billion euros by the EU for abusing its 95 percent dominance of PC operating systems through its Windows operating system. The Commission had initially fined Microsoft 497 million Euro in March 2004 for deliberately damaging rivals by offering its Windows Media Player with Windows. The second fine of 899 million Euro followed in February 2008, that's also the biggest ever fine imposed on a company by the EU committee.

AMD Roadmap Shows 6-core and 12-core Opteron Processors

In a briefing today AMD disclosed a conservative road map for 45nm server processors using six and twelve cores that will gradually start to ship starting from Q1 2009. The new processors will be manufactured in a 45 nm process that will be introduced with the Shanghai quad-core later this year. Shanghai will deliver performance boost of about 20% over Barcelona thanks to the new process, the doubled overall cache size and the 800MHz DDR2 memory controller. In the second half of 2009, AMD intends to ship a single-die 6-core Socket F (1207) processor code-named "Istanbul". Offered for two- and four-socket systems, the chip will likely utilize AMD's HyperTransport 3.0 technology and increased shared L3 cache from 2MB to 6MB. In two years time from now AMD is promissing a completely new platform. Called the "Maranello" platform, it will bring new 6-core "Sao Paulo" CPUs with 6MB of L3 cache, as well as the dual-die 12-core "Magny Cours" processor with 12MB L3 cache. Both processors will be built in 45nm, with DDR3 memory support and HyperTransport version 3.0 interconnect. AMD will couple these CPUs with motherboards that use its own RD890S and RD870S northbridges as well as the SB700S southbridge.

ASUS Launches World's First Modularized Graphics Card - Splendid MA3850M 512MB GDDR3

Not long ago ASUS demonstrated a concept card called Trinity which had three RV670 GPUS mounted through two daughter boards. Today ASUS is taking this concept a step further with the introduction of the ASUS Splendid MA3850M modulized card that is assumed to be more than a museum piece. The Splendid MA3850M has a modular structure with single ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3850 GPU loaded on a ASUS Splendid HD PCI-Express daughter card that is 27% shorter than an average PCI-E graphics card. Moreover, the card supports ATI's proprietary PowerPlay technology, and ASUSTeK's Splendid HD processor that enhances image and video quality without increasing CPU load. Clocked at 668MHz/1.65GHz core/memory clocks and fueled by 512MB DDR3 and 256-bit memory interface the card will perform on par with other generic HD 3850 video cards. The manufacturer did not announce availability or pricing for this new graphics product, but you can find a little bit more info here.

NVIDIA to ''simplify'' its Gaming Product Range

In an interview with GamesIndustry, NVIDIA said that it is looking to simplify its gaming product range in order to appeal to a wider audience. Speaking to GamesIndustry, Roy Taylor, VP of Content Business Development, admitted that NVIDIA's current range of products is overcomplicated and too confusing for users that may not follow the graphics market like we computer related people do. "It is a challenge that we're looking at right now. There is a need to simplify it for consumers, there's no question," Taylor explained. "We think that the people who understand and know GeForce today, they're okay with it - they understand it. But if we're going to widen our appeal, there's no doubt that we have to solve that problem," he added. Specific plans of how NVIDIA is intending to remodel its product line were not disclosed during the small talk.

"Your preferences will be retained. However, you will no longer be able to uninstall IE7. If you go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out." In related news, Microsoft team also adviced users of the IE8 Beta 1 to uninstall it if they are attempting to install and use Windows XP SP3 in order to prevent their systems from possible future instability issues.

Report: GDDR Price About to Rise

DigiTimes today reported that prices of DRAM parts may rise, citing sources at Taiwan IC distributors.
Some DRAM makers have started allotting more capacity for commodity DRAM, especially SO-DIMMs for notebooks, the sources said. Capacity for GDDR has started to strain amid the strategic capacity allocation, they noted. As DRAM makers are expected to reserve capacity priority for commodity DRAM for 1-2 quarters, a price revision for GDDR is thus likely, they said. The sources indicated that a price hike is likely to be seen from the second half of May, as some system makers are expected to completely digest their inventory by then.
Let's hope this won't give occasion for ATI and NVIDIA for just another delay or price bump. Both companies are set to launch their next-generation graphics cards over the coming months. The latest ATI Radeon HD 4 series cards will use both GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory parts.

Dell Vostro 1310 Keyboards Come with Different and Incorrect Keyboard Layout in UK

I can't explain how happy I'm at the moment, because something like this is being widely reported. It was only a matter of time before someone compain in public. Too bad that it comes from Dell, not the manufacturer I had the same problem with. It seems that the latest Dell Vostro 1310 laptops come with two different types of keyboard layouts - European and USA (International). The problem comes with the European layout which has a big Enter key and changed "forward slash" key position right next to the "Z" key. Try this in a laptop keyboard and the result is sad, the whole bottom row of keys moves with one ahead. Now the worst part, Dell confirmed that all laptops shipped to UK and most likely the whole Europe come with the misconfigured European layout pictured below (third picture shows how the USA layout looks like). I had nearly the same problem with my brand new Logitech G15 rev. 2 keyboard, and it appears all Logitech keyboards ship to Europe with different layout too, without any sign of information that there're two versions - for Europe and USA. It's a shame that things like this happen these days.

New Rumour - Pegatron Gets OEM Orders for Blu-ray Xbox 360 Consoles

Although Microsoft smashed all recent rumours that a Blu-Ray drive for Xbox 360 was in production, today DigiTimes issued a new statement claiming that a company under the name of Pegatron Technology is now going to be the OEM producer of feature Blu-Ray Xbox 360 consoles. Unfortunately, it's unclear to me whether the original submitter meant that the Blu-Ray support will be added as an add-on device, or there'll be a whole new version of the 360 console with internal Blu-Ray drive.
Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, has secured orders from Microsoft to assemble Xbox 360 consoles equipped with a Blu-ray Disc (BD)-ROM drive, with shipments to begin in the third quarter of 2008, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) newspaper.
, the site claims. We should see if that's true in a short time. Usually Microsoft issues a statement in two or three days after the publication to decline the rumours.

Foxconn Intel P45 Quantum Force 'Avenger' Exposed

Almost a month ahead of the Intel P45 release, Foxconn has showed the Quantum Force "Avenger" motherboard based on the Intel P45 chipset that is complete and ready to please many overclockers. The overall looks of the board is not quite what you've expected it to look like. The P45 northbridge is now between the CPU and memory area, and there're plenty of red DIP switches, dual BIOS chips, 8-Phase Digital PWM and 2-Phase PWM for memory power regulation and Dual PCI-E x16 Gen. 2.0 slots that make this motherboard one of a kind. There're even measurement points above the memory slots for convenient and accurate voltage reading in case you're using multimeter. The northbridge heatpipe cooling can also be used for mounting a fan that will cool both the chipset and the memory slots. Be sure to check up on this link here for more information and pictures.

Intel Atom Faces Shortages Before Launch Time

Intel has confirmed that it is facing production problems with its still unreleased Intel Atom chips, prompted by demands that exceed initial expectations. "We are working closely with our customers to meet their needs," said Intel spokesman Bill Calder. "We're just seeing better-than-anticipated demand." he added. The 45nm single core Intel Atom processor is based on an entirely new design, built for low power and designed specifically for ultra low-cost portable devices such as laptops. The official launch of the Atom chips is scheduled for release in June 2008. Mini-laptops powered by them will be available shortly after. More than 10 PC makers have already placed orders with Intel for Atom chips. However, initial reports suggest that Intel will be able to meet only 40% of these orders and expect the short supply of Atom chips to continue until the third quarter of 2008. Most affected by the shortage are companies like: Acer, Dell, MSI and GIGABYTE.
